I really needed a simple tutorial like this with just the bare bones to get started. Overhand still feels kinda awkward compared to natural underhand but Ill get the hang of it!
I remember when I first started playing basketball I struggled with layups...I could shoot well but layups were tricky...my problem always was that when I was about to shoot the layup I would put my head down.

honestly as a 5'3 female this helps cuz i be scared to do them especially over bigger defenders but i also need to get past being afraid and just going through with it.
hey coach i am 13 and i am right handed but i am better at layups with my left hand and because of that i do alot of dribble reps with my right hand and now i am better at dribbling with my right hand but still suck at right hand layup and i need to train my left hand now to dribble as good as my right hand so can you please tell me how to fix my right hand layup the ''RIGHT WAY''
Never teach a young child to shoot underhand lay-ups on a 10 foot basket. Underhand gets blocked too easily and most aren't strong enough to have proper form on a 10 foot basket.
Saying underhand layups get blocked easily is possibly the biggest myth in basketball. If they were easier to block, why would at least 50% of layups in high school level and even more on college level be underhand? Being easier to block has nothing to do with the type of layup, only the type of layup in context of the game situation. Overhand layups are just as easy to block when done at the wrong time. Both can be good or bad when done in the wrong situation. It all depends on where the defense is.
I generally teach kids overhand first because their control is usually better, but most kids don't have proper form on overhand or underhand at first. Really what they practice most they'll get better at faster. Most coaches teach overhand so that's what most kids are better at, but I've seen kids that can only layup underhand and not overhand.

Exact same problem I had. I took as learning to run before walking with this.

If you can't make it through a less than 60 second explanation you're going to have a hard time learning a lot of things 🤷♂️
