    Hi Simon, I just love your videos. New potter here. I loved pottery back in High School, haven't been able to get back to it until now, I'm 64 - never to late! I have your book and video, wonderful! Thank you!

    Simon this is really fun.A low inpact way to get to cone 10 . I guess you will be making a larger spy hole to see the cones !!! The kiln is so smal its hard to tell how the flame is moving but it seems to be happy to get there so your doing somthing right . My first try would have been to force the flame up with a baffle wall where on the fire mouth side and have a daughft sluceway on the oppisid side leading under the floor to your chimeny Its great your method works so well. Yours Guy

    Really lovely! I very much like the color of the shino but then I have always had a soft spot for shino. They don't look underfired to me. Again, thank you for sharing.

    Would a small rubber mallet work better than wooden handle to tap these apart? Just curious.

    Congratulations!! A real triumph.
    Was the burner that failed to work properly attached to the gas bottle that was almost empty? Could it be the low pressure in the gas bottle causing the problem rather than a fault with the burner? Is it worth trying the faulty burner on a full gas bottle before taking it to pieces?

    1. Did anyone show up for the unloading of the kiln?
    2. How much propane did it take?
    3. How long was the firing?
    EXCELLENT, AS ALWAYS!!

    Hi Simon, do you have an approximate time for how long you have the gas running? Thanks!

  • @smullis7
    @smullis7 14 лет назад

    Interesting the differences due to temperature. It took me a whole day to throw 4 bowls that match and you have a whole kiln of them! :-) Love all of it, but the large pitcher is my favorite.

  • @juneyb01
    @juneyb01 14 лет назад

    Simon if they are underfired does that mean you have to fire them again up to temperature, and if so can you use an electric kiln to refire or would that alter the colours/finish. If the bowls are underfired does that mean they are not food safe.

    it's amazing how your GP bowls are all the same size and can fit into each other like that. I've been trying to get bowls like that, but it's so difficult..

    When you say you sprayed the gp bowls with wood ash on the outside, what exactly is the wood ash? At one point in a much earlier clip you sprayed a piece with water and then tossed dry wood ash on the pot, ( in spain I think) Is that what you are referring to, or did you mix up a wet solution? If so can you explain what the solution was.

    My little cress kiln just crapped out :(
    Thank you for sharing your video, maybe i can do this with mine. Raku firing possibly? Im new at firing. All the classes or programs i went to did not have any students deal with the firing. So, i am Learning as i go! 😋

    Simon, would you please discuss " Carbon Trapping"
    and why it ( IS ) or ( Isn't ) desirable?
    I have a raku piece I made that has a great deal of carbon trapping and I really like it, however, it's sounds as if it's not a desired look?
    Also the glaze on your favorite "Moon Bowl" seems very bubbly and course, again could we see close ups on some of these effects and why you or others perfer them.
    Many of us love the look of gas fired pieces, but not had the opportunity except in Raku.

    How do you glaze fire those pots that are stacked inside of each other? Since I can see that the bottom of the pot is not stuck to the inside of the pot beneath it, I can tell it works, but why doesn't it stick??

    quick question simon... how exactly are you controlling the reduction in the kiln? i dont think i remember you saying that you were going to be using a damper in the other video of you making this kiln.
    -thank you, sam

    Oh, and I wanted to encourage you to try several shino recipes as they all very considerably. I'll look up a few of the ones I like. I'll send you a message here with that sooner or later.

    The results look great! It is inspiring to see such a simple kiln perform so well. I'm considering making a little one of my own, not a converted electric though, but one just about that size. How long did it take to fire? How much do you charge for your G.P. bowls? You said cheap, but how cheap?

    @cannabisawesomis I have been weighing out my clay but I should probably start using a gauge soon. I'm a student so finding time to get into the studio is a bit difficult. But i'll start practicing with a gauge soon. thanks for reminding me! :)

    Simon, can you tell us more about the reduction and timing of this firing? Did you close the chimney and when for how long? What do you have on top of the chimney? All this is very inspiring for making a kiln for shino firing!

    The flame issue on your burner makes me wonder if it is blocked or if it is a draft problem. I've had issues with such things if my draft isn't strong enough, but that was with natural gas. Propane is under pressure so I'm not sure the draft is as important.

    Thank goodness,
    Thought you might go all Dramantic when the hammer came out! ( forgot the sticking bowl trick)
    I really hate those stupid people who distroy their pots right out of the kiln ( Utube videos) if they think the pots are seconds or just don't like them, so waistful!
    So Simon, how much would you estimate the cost of this firing ?
    Really love the results so far.
    Could spend hours looking at, and talking about , why one glazed surface is more or less apeeling to you or other!

    how are you able to stack pieces for a glaze firing without them fusing together?

    • @Cate7451
      @Cate7451 5 лет назад

      You put wads underneath between the shelf and the base of the pot. You can make these with flour water and .......leave a 1/2" between each pot.
