They wear wigs because to their faith, the hair represents their inner beauty, that they only show to their husbands, and not others on their daily lives. So they wear them in public and take them off as they get back home. (Of course that they are still wearing them at home because they are being filmed).

She says that being a makeup artist puts her at the edge of rules, etc. I'm not sure about that. I am Orthodox, but my reason for usually not using cosmetics is that I don't care about them. Many Orthodox women, very religious, use cosmetics happily and comfortably. Our religion does discuss modestly and appearance, but it focuses at least as much on inner development.

    • @riproar11
      @riproar11 2 года назад

I can't go into much detail but the Old Testament mentions about not enlarging the eyes with paint and in vain. Makeup violates the modesty of appearance. There are videos on RUclips where women do before and after make-up and completely transform themselves. They are scary and it's deceptive like it's a form of witchcraft. It makes you understand why makeup should not be used and skin should not be tattooed.

Wow, the comments on this video are savage! People insulting these women's religion, the way the interpret and practice modesty, the quality of their wigs. While Judaism and its practices might seem foreign and "odd" to you, please remember that the women in this video were raised in a community where they were viewed as normal. Also, while some aspects and sects of Orthodox Judaism are extreme (ie. extremism), every religion has extremists. The comment section of this video is not the place to judge these women or the way they practice and observe their religion. There are many different sects within Judaism, one of which is Orthodox Judaism. And there are many sects within Orthodoxy as well, some of which are more extreme and "cultish" than others. But without knowing the details of how these women observe Judaism and the rules that they choose or are forced to follow, we should not assign these horrible, discriminatory labels on them in particular, and/or Judaism as a whole.

I don't mean to be picky or apologist in the comments section, however I do want to point out that at some points I find this documentary portrays a slightly one dimensional view of ultra-orthodox Judaism, in that some facts carefully left out of the mix to create a blanket stereotype for ultra-orthodox Jewish communities. For example: at about 5.30 the narrator states correctly that women do not sing in front of men. However, she then erroneously asserts that women aren't traditionally allowed onstage or to sing in a public setting at all.
Also, while it is true that many women in certain ultra-orthodox communities marry at nineteen and do not pursue higher education, this is also not a blanket rule by any means. There is a huge number of women who marry between 19-30 and pursue a higher education while single or married.
6:30 onwards is pretty great tho- rock on!

Mostly, Orthodox man studying Torah all day and working once in a while.
Also, there is a misunderstanding about the singing, Orthodox woman allowed to sing, but only to audiences of woman.
If they don't like to live like that, there are other more liberal groups in the Judaism.

Something I’ve found amazing about Judaism is I’ve found many of the people i know super accepting and non-judgemental. The Hareidim are a reaction to radical change that endangered the Jewish people. They adopt changes slowly because we have seen that change can be dangerous. This means that Hareidim do change, but they do so slowly and carefully. Also, Hareidim are not homogeneous. In some communities women are the breadwinners and men are scholars. In other communities men might work while women are homemakers. Or both might work.

George The issue for a married Jewish woman is to cover her hair. A married woman receives her aura which should only intimately be shared with her husband when she gets married. This is why a single woman need not cover her hair.
Yet you are correct surprisingly on two fronts. 1. According to Jewish mysticsm, human hair wigs actually reduce the aura that a married woman has.
      2. Human hair that is donated by Hindu women in India is often donated by those women as their hair is being cut as an offering to their gods. It is forbidden by Jews to benefit from such hair dedicated to "other gods". This is very problematic today because most human hair wig manufacturers use hair from India. SoJews from the Sefaradic tradition do not use wigs to cover their hair because of a ruling by the deceased sage of the generation, Ovadia Yosef zt"l

If it were simply an issue of modesty, then all women, single and married adult women, would be required to cover their hair. Yet, this law does not apply to single women. In Islam ALL adult women must cover their hair, and neck with a hijab. So for Islam it is an issue of women needing to cover up in order not to cause men to have temptations. This is not the case here with Orthodox Jewish women covering their hair. Otherwise you would have to explain why single women can let their hair flow wildly in public. care to explain? "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and be modest. That is purer for them. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do. - 24:30". So clearly hijab is not worn to not excite men. This video makes it seem like child rearing is a horror and the most important thing in life is working and higher education. Again, another example of how our society views women as oppressed if they choose to live their lives unlike men. I bet if men raised children we would honor it. I know plenty of orthodox women who are happy and honored. Their husbands treat them like queens of their homes.

Also they mashed up different communities into one, each group of charadim or even orthodox Jews are very different from each other and live very differently. Like the other poster said PLEASE PLEASE talk to people from the actual community you want to write about, It's important to know which community that is though. The main Jewish woman in this was lovely but not a true representative of the charadi community. She may have grown up in it but now (in her external appearance and mannerisms) she's more modern orthodox (nothing bad about that at all, it's just that she's a very atypical charadi woman and sadly because of that a lot of the community will not accept her as charadi). Also there were SO many inaccuracies in this clip (even the jewish woman and men didn't properly explain things uggg). All the best with your project!

Jewish women cover their hair with another piece of human hair wig which... makes no sense according to Islamic teachings. Plus, marrying more than once or polygamy in marriage is 'permitted' but not 'obligated' ONLY if the person can do justice between the wives he has! Otherwise, it is NOT permitted if the man can't do justice between his wives be it financially, physically or emotionally.

Women covering their hair with fake hair makes no sense. Why not wear a head scarf instead? I have seen some Jewish women wear a scarf and cover their whole head of hair and it looks good as well as being modest.

    1. Ritual impurities come from contact with death, and the most severe of these is contact with a human corpse. Every woman's egge or man's sperm has a potential for life and when that potential is wasted the man or woman becomes ritually impure and must immerse themselves in a ritual bath. People focus on the women's side with their periods, but men have similar thing whenever they, for example, have a wet dream.
    2. Both men and women are required to cover themselves, but the specifics are different. However if you take close look you'll notice that even though the requirements on men are slightly less strict they tend to dress very modestly, and that even includes those who are not religious, so the requirements. Women on the other hand keep seeking to wear shorter and tighter clothing. Men are not bothered by the requirements and tend to dress far more modestly than women, who are bothered by them.
    3. It appears that some Jews were influenced by foreign chauvinistic attitudes and assume the halacha (Jewish law) matches those views.
    4. It is prohibited for men to hear women sing, and since it is probited to cause others to sin women must therefor avoid singing in front of men, although they may sing together with men.
    5. Among the Hareidim women are often the breadwinners, and the level of secular education for men and women is probably about equal. However, among adults men tend to continue their religious study, while wome focus more on raising the children. Both activities are considered to be of top priority.
    6. Both men and women are prohibited from cross-dressing. During Biblical times both wore dresses, but there were male dresses and female dresses. Now both wear pants, with men wearing men's pants and women wearing women's pants. This leads me personally to conclude that nowadays there is no prohibition on women wearing women's pants, as long as they are sufficiently long and loose. There are Orthodox women who do wear such pants, although they are not Hareidi. In my estimation the reason why pants are still considered prohibited is because of a resistence to change, because change is disruptive and dangerous. I just wish sometimes that with all the necessary caution and adjustment periods it was still possible to move faster, and that there were no idiots who opposed things for invalid or nonsensical reasons.

It is not impure to menstruate. It's not a wasted life. It's not a waste. Women cannot use every single egg in their body. Women cannot have thousands of children. Every egg should not be mourned. Just as every sperm should not be mourned when a man has a wet dream or masturbates to porn or prostitutes, like unfortunately many religious men are doing more and more.

      +Lovequeen That's your personal opinion.
When the potential for life goes unfulfilled that creates a minor ritual impurity since life is good and death, or in this case more like a hint of death, is bad. That's it. What you think about it doesn't change this fact.

+Yeshayahu ben Pineḥas Cohen and the practical side effect is that a period of separation and cleansing actually helps marriages and relationships and makes couples miss each other and stay close and happy to be together. You can't just impose your thinking on a custom that is thousands of years old without context. Also Catholics don't use contraception for the same principle, the potential of life, a great gift which should be accepted when given and mourned when gone.

For clarity, impure is not a great translation. Someone who is tamai is not suitable at this time to participate in ritual service. There is no negative connotation as one can be in this state after the performance of a highly valued mitzvot, such as preparing a body for burial. It is expected and accepted that people fluctuate in and out of this stage it is neither good nor bad- it just is. It has nothing to do with being physically unclean, as demonstrated by the process to be fit for ritual purpose. When attending the mikveh first one washes thoroughly with soap and shampoo, nail poish is removed, the areas in and around nails are cleaned, lint from belly button removed, jewlery removed, you blow your nose, clean around your ears. You are completely squeaky clean, but not yet suitable for ritual purpose. A guide of the same sex accompanies you to the bath while you are wrapped in a towel, briefly inspects that you have reached any area on your back that you might have missed, looks for stray hair and checks to see that you fully immerse, and assists you in saying the blessings if necessary. So, it is only after you immerse fully in mayim chai'im, living waters, either from a river or collected rainwater you return to the state of being appropriate for ritual service. It is a spiritual transformation that requires being phys
      ically clean before participation.

It's because when a woman gets pregnant while on period her baby dies after a few days of being born, so that's both wasting semen and a murder, as it's a well known fact that women shouldn't get pregnant while they're on period.

Every time I see wigs like this it reminds me of when my mom had cancer, so it makes me feel sad. They look really artificial even though it’s real human hair. ugh I don’t like it, that’s just me, I think lace front looks more natural. Also this is like if god outlawed bikinis and then all the women of this religion wore those oversized white t shirts with an airbrushed bikini lady on it.. like sure it’s modesty but ..what is the freaking point?! But I respect their choice.
