What's insane about Kim jung gi is his ability to start a drawing of a person with the head. Then jump down to the foot, then build the body upward from the foot to the head while including a complex pose. Mind boggling.
He gets the subject's focus of attention and direction with the head, while feet serves as a grounding position to force the subject into perspective. And then body language that builds upward towards the head gives us an understanding of the type of personality the subject would have if they were made into reality, distribution of weight dependent on three points of mass. Two of which have been placed into the medium of illustration and then it's all about placing the lines to fill in the space in between. Between the beginning and the final production would be all the repertoire of skills, library and comprehension of techniques to get the production your way. Maybe even find out that they are certain techniques you might want to relearn or pick up entirely from a fresh angle. 😁✌
Saw you interviewed in a proko video two days ago and followed you on instagram. Followed you on youtube yesterday, and bought a gumroad lesson today. This is the kind of high quality content I really wish there was more of on youtube.
Thank you for making these videos, and explaining everything so clearly. I'm binging through all of them at the moment. Though one thing I need to point out is that the robot's 'batteries' are asynchronous servo motors.
Hi where de you find your references please ? I'm currently working on a robot character design and i have hard time finding good one to developp my understanding of mechanical anatomy. Thanks for your future answers.
My big thing is I just don't know how to keep on adding more mechanical pieces. Just draw some random lines and circles and go with it? This type of drawing is crazy to me!
Think about why certain parts move in a particular way. Thier purpose is built onto the design. Know why and how something is acheived, will help you understand the function of the drawing you are designing in it's own world. It's not random at all, it's intentional
I'd honestly just love a video on how you choose which lines to add weight to like this. It's incredible and I still don't fully understand the reasoning behind it
converging lines are parallels in perspective. if they don't converge at all then you're just drawing with really low perspective. look at a telephoto lens picture, which looks really flat, vs a normal phone pic
I discussed it briefly in "Becoming a Gi Part 1" and the first episode of this series but I definitely want to cover it more in depth. If you have a chance to catch one of the livestreams (Fri-Sun 1pm EST) I'll gladly cover the topic more in depth
I have a problem that when I draw the same object from a different perspective, it loses its proportion and the size is no longer the same. I have not found anything in Spanish that I can understand, I was wondering if there is a solution to this
How do you draw like that on a tablet? My lines get messy and sloppy. On paper i can draw that probably but these technical drawings are too hard on a graphic tablet
James, noticed your anatomy drawings have a sort of "architectural style"...saw something similar in a book by Alberto Lolli (unfortunately in Italian...can see it on Amazon). Do you have any similar anatomy recommendation in English. I have several good anatomy books (Bammes, Peck etc.) but none employ this style. Thanks
Please do this on paper with a pen, so I can actually learn how to draw this, think in this way. This teaches me nothing, only that you know how to use photoshop.
well I did it traditionally, but if you really think digital art might help, a wacom intuos is 75 USD and Krita is a free software program that's almost as good as Photoshop. And if line weight is what you want, a brush with ink, or brush pen, can get you lines with the same variety.

M Ash whoa, you just awakened some sight in me
@@_-9087 Aaron blaise also does that,he draws the extremes of the body, the center line and then draws the rest of the body.
Kim jung gis the only reason I looked up something relevant to find this 😂
Reading this comment now after his death last winter. Its amazing how many people he has touched with his imsane technical skill. He is dearly missed.

Lady Modern Day - Emotional Support.
The background is a murder of crows eating a corpse...
Okay...
PLEASE DONT STOP THIS

You're doing the Pencil God's work, bud! Thank you for being you! :)
You are absolute beast! I don't even know that is possible to draw such complex things, i always thought that this joints and parts were 3d modeled.
Great video! except those were hydraulic cylinders you drew not hydraulic pumps, minor detail but important to note
Thanks so much for the feedback, I'm painfully unaware of how machines work :D
why is the intro so hype and well done!
The way this guy draws is so satisfying. He d be drawing a box and id be like damn thats the spot
Great video. I like how you clearly show the primitive forms that you are cutting to form the objects.
Your channel is arguably a "must follow" to BOTH artist wannabes AND art teachers.
Hey really appreciate these. Verry well explained and demonstrated.
Also hilarious intros 😅
this is more than just an intro
remains me Stranger Things OSt ( i now this come from Tron )
Intro was the best part :)
GOD, this channel is amazing! I can't believe you don't have more views.
Dude I love this! Super unique as far as art channels.
Great music selection and awesome, informative video. Thanks!
Do you flip your canvas occassionally to help with these sort of sketches in perspective? (or in general) ?
Thank you for the advice! Love the intro by the way. :)
I got really hype hearing the SummingSalt song in the middle around 7 minutes. Speedrun history, art edition.
OH that's why the music sounded eerily familiar

Look at references

How do you actually build your visual library? Do you just look up an image on google about let's say a car and just draw it as accurate as possible?
This is really nice
Very good video
Great video!
Great video James!
I'd honestly just love a video on how you choose which lines to add weight to like this. It's incredible and I still don't fully understand the reasoning behind it
thank you for making me dizzy enough
Do you draw your “converging lines” as parallels?
converging lines are parallels in perspective. if they don't converge at all then you're just drawing with really low perspective. look at a telephoto lens picture, which looks really flat, vs a normal phone pic
excellent as always
Very nice intro!
How many years do you practice drawing?
2 years of intense study, however, I've been sketching for most of my life
@@moderndayjames what did you study, if you dont mind me asking??? and how many hours a day? you should make a video about it too
Realy usefull video, thanks!
Dat intro! Can you make every episode 80's like and draw some retro stuff?
love that intro.
Where's part 1?
OH GOD! thank you soooooo much!
Really great!
Moderndayjames any chance you can make a video about rotating objects in perspective? there doesn't seem to be much out there about the topic...
I discussed it briefly in "Becoming a Gi Part 1" and the first episode of this series but I definitely want to cover it more in depth. If you have a chance to catch one of the livestreams (Fri-Sun 1pm EST) I'll gladly cover the topic more in depth

Michael Hampton - Figure Drawing (Design and Invention)
Part 1????
What program do you use to do your drawings? Thanks a lot for these videos bro!
Autodesk Sketchbook Pro based on what I've seen from other videos. You can get if for free at the moment (Dec. 14, 2018).
what program did you used?
the batteries look more like servos/steppers lol - still awesome though
I hate the fact that I still need to use guidelines but whatever lol.
Thanks boss
how can u do that without perspective grid??? is it the 999999 times you do that? so you already remember the grid in your mind?
yes, once you become comfortable with creating forms in perspective without a grid it becomes a lot easier to work directly
A battery? I think it’s motor. Power is provided via cables
whats in an intro?
Very retro.
Hanzhen harmonic drive gear , robot joint gear , over 30 years experience ,
best
I cant catch up with the ultimately deep tutorial. Its too deep to be called as a tutorial!!!
why do all the circlejerky "80's" themed graphics look nothing like what we would actually have in the 80s?
because this is a very low budget channel!
侬哈结棍呀
man-made machines as opposed to what other kind of machines lol?
Natural machines ofc! Like ones that grow from trees
Heh, simple as that :)

The intro💀
the opening so boring
luckily youtube has that skip feature built right in! It's very awesome
Please do this on paper with a pen, so I can actually learn how to draw this, think in this way. This teaches me nothing, only that you know how to use photoshop.
You can do the same using pencils for construction lines, then pen to do the lines neatly.
well I did it traditionally, but if you really think digital art might help, a wacom intuos is 75 USD and Krita is a free software program that's almost as good as Photoshop. And if line weight is what you want, a brush with ink, or brush pen, can get you lines with the same variety.
it taught you nothing because you closed your mind
go back to perspective, it taught me to get back and have almost the same like what he did. but using my own imagination for the object.
This video sucks. Im trying to draw it but I cant draw it in 3D.
No one draw on paper today how boring
I draw on paper all the time
