  • Berklee’s Valencia campus and the Mediterranean Music Institute joined forces to create the Mediterranean Roots Festival (Festival Raíces del Mediterráneo), a biannual, two-day event celebrating the musical heritage, influence, sounds, and traditions of the Mediterranean.
The concerts took place in October 29 and 30, at the Theatre Sala Martin i Soler in the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia, Spain.
The October 29, 2015, concert featured Mexican singer and UN spokesperson Magos Herrera with the Berklee Mediterranean Ensemble.
On October 30, the festival honored Paco de Lucía with a tribute concert featuring singer, composer, and producer Pepe de Lucía (Paco’s brother) and flute and saxophone player Jorge Pardo.
Jorge Pardo is one of flamenco's most innovative instrumentalists and a longtime member of de Lucía's Sextet, and composer and vocalist Pepe de Lucía, is a living legend in the flamenco world. Accompanying them were a group of Berklee students, flamenco singer Saúl Quirós, flamenco guitarist Antonio Sanchez, and percussionist Ané Carrasco. In addition, Pepe de Lucía received the Mediterranean Music Institute Master of Mediterranean Music Award. The Huffington Post called this show one of the top performances of 2015, and the next festival is scheduled for 2017.
