Jesus man this is probably the best video on RUclips showing the primer swap process. I'm assuming this will for the most part be the same as the RL550C because all the parts look the same. Thanks for all the info it's a huge help!!!!
Excellent tutorial. I'm not new to reloading, only new to using a Dillon 550C press (I'd used a Hornady press since '73) and moved to a Dillon 550C and really like it, I'd been reloading 9mm and 38 ACP which take small pistol primers. Now, I want to reload some 45 ACP and 44 Mag cases and need to use large pistol primers. Your video clearly explained how to change from reloading setup on the Dillon (the 550B and 550C used the same primer feeders) from small primers to large primers. Thanks for taking the time,
Thank you for making these very helpful videos. When I finally get my RL 550B your videos will definitely make it a lot easier to learn how to properly use and maintain it.
Good video, helped me out. Purchased my 550 in 91' and back then they gave you 4 tubes two white pickups and two black for the sleeve. No red, can be confusing. Hope that helps some of you vintage reloaders.
@biguy525 thanks. That is a great way to go. I am thinking of getting multiple presses for rifle. A single stage set up to trim, and a second 550b for loading. Gotta go easy on the misses though.
@ipaintyou1 good question, i really dont know, but you can just use small primers and they fire just fine...maybe with modern powder the small primers work fine, but back in the day it may have needed a large primer to get the powder burning....just a guess.
The small primer magazine tube assembly tube has a blue plastic tip with a tab on it. When you insert it into the primer housing make sure that tip is facing you. It should sort of pop into place. If you look from behind the press into the primer feeder, you should see the blue tip protruding right about the primer seating cup. Make sure the primer slide is going all the way back when you operate the ram, with the handle down pull it toward you. It should go all the way back on its own.
Great video! I needed to figure out how to remove primers in my feeding tube prior to converting calibers (.223 --> .40S&W). I removed the silver knurled cap and pulled out the silver internal tube...oops. I ASSumed all the primers would stay in the tube... but Noooo! So I need to actually remove the outer black tube. Thought I better research and your vid hit the mark. Also, great video clarity/resolution, as well. Easy to see what needed to be seen. THANKS!
Thanks for the vid. Very helpful. I just recently changed my primer feed from large to small and I am having trouble with upside down primers, maybe 2 every 100 rounds. Now I know why. I forgot about the primer tube inside the blast tube being different. Headed to my reloading room now to change that.
part 2. if you can pull into back, then your operating rod may not be pushing it all the way and you might have to bend in a bit to get the priming system to fully cycle. Having said all that, call Dillon too. They are great.
I never deprime brass on my Dillons. I am currently using my new MEC Marksman Press for depriming and resizing Rifle cases, (308, 30-06, & 5.56). Then I clean the cases and reload on my Dillons. I resize my rifle cases on my MEC and trim on my Giraud Case Trimming Machine.
Thanks for the video! I was trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to get a duplicate assembly to quickly swap between spp and lpp, but it doesn't really seem worth it now that I see (again) how to swap the assembly.
@johniac7078 @ipaintyou1 I have had some cases of Prvi Partizan. It is because of action shooters with an older 45acp weapon. When you unload your weapon on a good speed, there is a chance to accidentially fire the large primer with the ejector. When you will use a small primer the risk is far less. Hope you get it, regards from holland.
This is an excellent video...definetly professional quality! What make/model cam corder did you use, the high definition is awesome! Your explanation is very clear, easy to understand and follow. Thank you very much.
Hi Great Video, hope you can help me Just got the 550 B and have a problem with the small primers. I find the tube inside does not line up with the part that receives the primer and then it falls off. the blue part of the rod is not close enough to drop the primer neatly into the part that takes the primer to the case. this part should go futher back to get the primer properly been a nightmare I am so dissapointed HOPE YOU CAN HELP I am on skype if that would help. cheers Bill Scotland
Very informative video as usual. I've been shooting for years and now I would like to save some money reloading. What do you think of selecting the Dillon XL-650 as my first reloading machine. I would like to reload 9mm, 40 cal and down the road .223. Generally speaking, how many empty casings is good to start with for reloading. I shoot every other week a couple hundred rounds. Great detail in your dillon videos. Your Gun Safe is like a party in a box ...whooo yeah!!
Thanks for the share. very informative for some one like me who's very much interested in starting up a reloading hobby, especially, now that I have different set of gun calibers to initiate with. My choice is the same machine that your are using since I have encountered very much good reviews about it and lots of you tube instructional videos. 'Guess a good way to go.
Good video. Helped refresh my memory. It's not like I change primer size frequently so this helped a lot. It's the little details you forget!

There's a much faster method

I'm mechanically inclined but I now understand why people get 2 dillon presses, one for each size primer. Awesome vid man.
Thank you for making these very helpful videos. When I finally get my RL 550B your videos will definitely make it a lot easier to learn how to properly use and maintain it.

@glock2312 The 650 rocks. Should be perfect. Thanks for the nice comments.
@biguy525 thanks. That is a great way to go. I am thinking of getting multiple presses for rifle. A single stage set up to trim, and a second 550b for loading. Gotta go easy on the misses though.

Yet again a great vid! love your professionalism and attention to details.
What a great video John. If I did not already have a full plate, I would be reloading like a madman. Happy New Year buddy. : )

Great tutorial for changing primer sizes. will be very helpful when I switch from large to small primers. thanks

Thanks I have a sticky inner tube due to 4 years of inactivity. You told me how to remove and clean it. Thanks

great videos by the way, I've downloaded all your videos because I just bought a used 550 from e-bay. Wish me luck
@batt3687 9, 40 use small. 45 large. Then there are magnum primers.
Thanks for the video! I was trying to decide whether or not it's worth it to get a duplicate assembly to quickly swap between spp and lpp, but it doesn't really seem worth it now that I see (again) how to swap the assembly.
do you have to adjust the depth of the primer (small or large ) . And do you show how to do that or did I miss it in the video
Aren't you supposed to remove the actuator rod before taking the 2 Allen head screws out from underneath?
I have one of the first 550b's to come from Dillon and I do not have that black spacer plate. It just slides on the bare metal.
Which size pistol calibers use which size primers?
These videos have really helped me - thank you. (just a little feedback - you gotta watch how many times you say ok and alright) ;-)
BTW do the 550 comes with large and small primer feeder, feeder tubes, and pick up tubes?
@carlosjavieruhlmann thanks man, i use a canon vixia.
how do you get the media out of the flash hole or do you just deprime it with the media in there

Very helpful. Learned a lot. Thank you.

But how do you do this when you still have primers left in the tube?
do you tumble b4 or after priming
good vid - very helpful - question about pistol brass prep...do you/is it necessary to trim pistol brass?
I do not trim pistol brass.
good show of a quality piece of machinery..

How do you tell the difference between the large and small primer feed bar?
+Joseph Stanczak size of the primer cup.
Awesome. Thank you

@ChromeFreak123 thanks MIke!
Anoher good video. Good job...
Many thanks
Faster and easier to just swap out primer cups. Leave the rest in place. RUclips video on it shows how
very informative video...subscribed
@ejkoechling Go get 'em! You do fine. Go slow and read the manuals. Go minimal powder first.
What was that then? BTW your videos are nice!
Thank you very helpful
excellant, thank you
thanks, sometimes I am not so professional.........
I needed to see this so I can clean it...
But just to change primer size there's a much easier way.
yes
Great vid, very helpful, but you sound a little like Mr. Mackey from south park mkay. lol
Ok
You're killing me
Ok
Lol love it ok
before
no
3:23 was that a fart dude!
OK?
And 8:32.
There's a much easier way, all you need to change is the primer cup. ruclips.net/video/Nb1CvjA7UmA/видео.html
Another one at 7:10 hahaha.
if it was I would have bragged about it.........farts are funny
Pardon me.
