Thanks for the concise overview. As a professional guitarist with decades of experience giving live, un-amplified concerts in recital halls but no experience with amplifiers, I appreciated the talking. I could understand the context of how this amplifier produced the different sounds. From this viewer’s perspective, I appreciated your connecting information about the product with the sounds, as opposed to someone noodling about and twirling knobs. And although this wouldn’t be useful for me in my live performances, it is definitely something I’m going to purchase for use at home.
Yesterday I played for a small group (about 40 people) in a café setting and used nothing but the THR5A running on batteries. Sounded great and I didn't even have to max out on the volume setting.
Just a viewer perspective, the first thing everyone wants to hear is the amp, not five and a half minutes of talking before we get any music. Start with a quick demo, then go into the details and different setting examples.
I got myself a Yamaha AG Stomp a while back, which is pretty much the same thing effects wise in that it also has the mic simulations and that's just superb !! One of the best pedals I ever bought. I'd have no quarms about buying this amp.
I didn't expect much but was taken by surprise as I heard this. I don't need to change my sound but this seems to make the tones more attention getting. Nice.
Bought Yam few months ago...Great hi-fidelity (except for low-pitch notes). The LED's make it absolutely beautiful, especially when playing in the dark!
Wow, this has been out there for nearly 9 years now. Still for sale, obviously popular. Is it safe to assume due to mics it doesn't have a stereo out? If they updated the electronics in an AG Stomp. provided all the same controls and attached to a little AMP cabinet I would be all in! Or just give us an updated AG Stomp.
Not sure if the amp is meant to do this, but my particular THR5A, when on the EG CLN setting, can actually get a decent amount of warm crunch if I crank the master to 11 and leave the volume knob somewhere around 10 o clock. It sounds great when playing lead, but anything on the low E string sounds like a fuzz pedal.
Good video. I am interested in buying this Amp from you guys, but how loud does it really get? I mean, if I strum the guitar pretty hard can the sound coming from the guitar drown the sound coming from the amp? It does look tiny...
With this amp do I not need a foot pedal,I have a Faith blood moon electric acoustic guitar, beautiful thing it is,and im recording an album,my lead guitar needs spicing up abit though, will this do the trick ?
hi i wonder is it possible to term..."aux" the sound of this amp to a mixer in order to play for a bigger audience . pardon my terminology . I'm still new
Hi, thanks for the review. Can I connect the output of ZOOM AC3 to acoustic guitar input like Yamaha THR5A or Marshall AS50D or orange crush Acoustic 30? The reason for this is I like the Shimmer effect (Pad) and would like to use it for professional performances with acoustic guitar amp.... Will this ruin my Zoom AC3 or acoustic guitar amp? In other words, will such acoustic guitar amplifiers support line level input from Zoom AC3 (Left/mono OUT)
One of the best review on that lil' amp which is so amazing actually ...i play on it with a Yamaha Silent nylon strings (D'addario Carbon actually) N this is the best sound i ever had n dream of (im playing kinda jazz neo-soul) i would even thinking to sell all my pedals n multiFX devices ...well not really in fact o_O i stick with them 4 my Ibanez S5470
so I'm half way through. considering buying the yamaha ac3r acoustic guitar which features the srt electronics. is the mic modeling/blend etc the exact same electronics that are featured in this amp. I know that the efx aren't built into the guitar,
I mixed a mic and guitar through a Zoom R8, just the preamps, and fed them both separately back into the THRA (mic in aux guitar into guitar channel). Worked well. I guess you could mix them first and just feed one stereo back into either channel.
I agree with Oliver Branch's comment, accepting it at face value as sounding like it would work. But mostly, I would not bother. It is not that kind of amp. Yes it makes your guitar louder, but not really loud. It is not about that. This amp adds reverb and effects to your guitar, but is not really the way to go for purely getting louder. It makes you sound better, but not all that much louder. This amp makes you sound better to you, and those in your living room. If you want to sound louder, get a Fishman Loudbox. They don't lie; they are loud.
"Can you gig with it?" No you can't. Well, yes you can. Maybe. It makes your guitar, maybe, twice as loud. If you are gigging in an environment where you plan to sing without any vocal amplification, then yes. Otherwise, get a Fishman Loudbox. My THR sounds better, but my Fishman puts out the sound volume. Horses for courses.
This is miss leading. You've got two SM 58's mic'd up to it... And they are plugged into some fantastic speakers. Why not show the amp as it is. Rachel.
I think you're misunderstanding? All the guitar audio you hear in this video are from the Twin SM57s, one on each of the amplifiers speakers. This isn't a head linked to a cab or anything like that.
So we are listening to an amp that is amped? I'm confused, so I need to mike this amp in order for anyone to hear it? I guess this would be a good amp if I had another amp to run it thru? @@AttitudeCastle
you guys always work hard and do great work. Over zealous reverb kinda spoilt the review in mnay places thoiugh sadly. I know you need us to hear the effects etc but give us some credibilty for taste... huge thanks for the review though..essential viewing as usual
I've heard this amp with an lrbaggs sl anthem which has a mic sound and thr amp sounds great. Here the guitar is quacking away not good for a demo of the amp.
the purpose of an amp is to increase the volume, So if you made only one amp why not make it the 10 watt model seeing as they already make it in the range for electric, It has batteries for outside where you will need more volume. Also when you play the acoustic You will hear both the amp and guitar together, so why not let us here what it sounds like in the room
I WAS VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS AMP TILL I SAW THEY LEFT THE TREMOLO OFF. THEY HAVE IT ON ALL THEIR OTHER THR AMPS. WHY NOT THIS ONE. I USE TREMOLO QUITE A BIT WITH MY ACOUSTIC GUITAR INSTEAD OF DELAY OR CHORUS. HOW SAD HOW SAD. THEY HAVE IT ON THEY OTHERS PLEASE ADD TREMOLO TO THE ACOUSTIC PLEASE
I bought one of these yesterday. Anything over halfway volume when strumming and it sounded awful. I took it back to the shop and they plugged me into another TRH5A and it was a bit better but not great. I ended up with a Laney LA20C instead. Funnily the strumming from 18.05 on this video sounds rubbish also. Its limitations are very light strumming or fingerpicking, for these its great. The all singing all dancing amp it aint!
Elder Lemon, could it be that your guitar was too hot for the amp? Were you getting a rock and roll crunchy distorted sound? If so, this is because the incoming signal from the guitar is too hot (too loud) for for the amp. If your guitar preamp has a volume knob, turning the volume down at the guitar usually solves the problem. Sorry it did not work out for you. It works for me, on a number of guitars, and only those with a battery in the guitar put out the kind of volume that distorts the amp - in which case turning the guitar volume knob down solves the problem. Moot point by now I suppose. :)
An acoustic practice amp, am I missing something you don't need an acoustic practice amp because an acoustic guitar already makes enough noise bye itself. Seems like Yamaha are creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
Exactly! I don't get it, why don't they make it big enough to actually use for a small gig etc, why make a tiny amp for an acoustic? Weird!! If absolutely love it if it was powerful enough to use when in paying in a gig situation
TheEvilscotsman123 This thing is good for recording and a cool way to color and customize the sound before plugging into a mixing board. The huge 100 watt amp days are over because they're simply not needed with modern sound systems.
I use a small practice amp with my acoustic for practising looping. Obviously you need an amp to use a loop pedal, and with something small I can play in my house without annoying my neighbours.
It has that plastic fake acoustic guitar sound that is typical when an acoustic is plugged in. If the purpose is to be able to record direct, without micing, and get a nice acoustic sound, it doesn't sound to me like this unit will cut it.
After all these years, this is still the BEST demo I found out from this acoustic amp.

Sounds nice! So do you think it would do the job outdoor-busking classical style/ singer-songwriter for a small circle of ~ 10 meters?
I bought this in 2015. Still loving it. Bought the matching carry bag too.
I've had a number of questions answered through this video, and yes their conversations were very helpful in understanding this product .
Been recording tracks via this amp for months. After watching this video I think I actually know the full extent of what it can do! Good advice
Hi James, what software do you use for recording?

Yep - the THR5A was my favorite on the day - very tempting indeed!
from guilford to the world.. well done
Awesome piece of equipment - sounds amazing. My early Xmas present.
Appreciate the review. I'm on the other side of the Pond, so I will likely order "more" locally. Thank you for the great review!
Amazing little amp! I also use it with a digital accordion. Can still be used with an electric guitar by the way.
Bought Yam few months ago...Great hi-fidelity (except for low-pitch notes).
The LED's make it absolutely beautiful, especially when playing in the dark!
I was planning on getting the marshall mini half stack but since watching this review, this ones the one i want. It sounds amazing!
@3:53 did you guys hear the General Lee horn? Doubt any one will see this now but...

I think all the reverb gets in the way...would like to hear a much dryer signal...
Had a quick go on one in the shop, had no idea it was this old.
.... That last sound alone makes me want to buy it.
Got no idea how this amp sounds too much reverb going on.
That's exactly right
I’ve come to the conclusion that Anderson’s like two things :- The sound of their own voices, and the smell of your own money
Sounds really interesting to record, it probably cannot replace micing but rather add another sound, what do you think of this used in recordings?
7 years later... I love the Monte Montgomery reference!
Hey guys, love the versatility with this one. I'm curious as to what pre amp settings you had on the A1R?
Not sure if the amp is meant to do this, but my particular THR5A, when on the EG CLN setting, can actually get a decent amount of warm crunch if I crank the master to 11 and leave the volume knob somewhere around 10 o clock. If they come out with a thr10a I think I would have to get it.
DANKE for this interesting introduction \ review!
Good video. I am interested in buying this Amp from you guys, but how loud does it really get? I mean, if I strum the guitar pretty hard can the sound coming from the guitar drown the sound coming from the amp? It does look tiny...
Would this amp be good for electric guitar?
How well does it work on nylon strings?
does it have line out? i mean can i plug this to a larger speakers?
Sounds really great. Just wondering, would it also work as a DI for live applications?
With this amp do I not need a foot pedal,I have a Faith blood moon electric acoustic guitar, beautiful thing it is,and im recording an album,my lead guitar needs spicing up abit though, will this do the trick ?
Brilliant demo, but the reverb is too loud/powerful throughout the entire video. You might as well have recorded the whole damn thing in a cathedral.
hi i wonder is it possible to term..."aux" the sound of this amp to a mixer in order to play for a bigger audience . pardon my terminology . I'm still new

An XLR input would be the perfect complement.
Would an electric guitar work if you connect it to the thr5a?
what do yoy think about the thr5?do you think is better than blackstar id core 10?
Hey, may i play a electric guitar with this amp? Not to get an acoustic sound, to get an electric sound. So, does it work like an electric guitar?
Man, you guys must REALLY like reverb! ;))
Thanks for the great review!
Does this unit have a line out?
Regards.
there is a melody played in between ..can anyone plz tell me what's the song name??
One of the best review on that lil' amp which is so amazing actually ...i play on it with a Yamaha Silent nylon strings (D'addario Carbon actually) N this is the best sound i ever had n dream of (im playing kinda jazz neo-soul) i would even thinking to sell all my pedals n multiFX devices ...well not really in fact o_O i stick with them 4 my Ibanez S5470
no mic input? im buying Fishman loudbox mini. :)
Is there a place to plug headphones?
does it have an aux output for those times when you do want to put it through a pa system?
What if i want to plug a ukulele in there?
HI ,is this amp any good for playing flute and sing? thakns in advance
Good video, so good I've just ordered one :o)
Wow, this sounds incredible :)
will this work with the piezo pickups in my petrucci guitar?
this is great my next amp!! just what i'm looking for. nice one guys just which i lived near your shop!!
so I'm half way through. considering buying the yamaha ac3r acoustic guitar which features the srt electronics. is the mic modeling/blend etc the exact same electronics that are featured in this amp. I know that the efx aren't built into the guitar,
Ok it sounds nice but what does it sound like with out the two mics running in front probably running into $1500 amp
That is the distant sound of Lunch arriving to an office nearby!
What's the orange light on closeups - are there valves in this amp?
alan sturgess these are just LED‘s. Looks pretty cool when playing in the dark
can i plug a mic for vocal to it?

Would this be loud enough to gig smallish venues like pubs and clubs?
no, but you just plug it into the amplifier wherever you are playing, you know what i mean, just aux in/out type thing. ...
+Marc Piechowicz Yeah I suppose I could
"Can you gig with it?" No you can't. Well, yes you can. Maybe. It makes your guitar, maybe, twice as loud. Good job, all clear, thx! Seems it’s one I look for. Order it on 17-th minute %)))
balanced in for Taylor ES??
No mic input though? :(
ML-2's selling slowly or something?
could you use this for live performing?
Is there a mic input for vocal?
I have this amp and this is a very very goog amp.
Can you use pedals with this amp?
Yes. It's perfect for pedals.
you guys always work hard and do great work. Over zealous reverb kinda spoilt the review in mnay places thoiugh sadly. I know you need us to hear the effects etc but give us some credibilty for taste... huge thanks for the review though..essential viewing as usual
Can I use a classical guitar on this? O.o
Julian Piedra If you have a preamp in your guitar!
seems to be "to be with you" by mr big
I so wanted to like this little amp. Having watched this it's just an FX explosion. I've still no idea how the amp sounds.
What's the sound at 3:51 ? :')
I've heard this amp with an lrbaggs sl anthem which has a mic sound and thr amp sounds great. Here the guitar is quacking away not good for a demo of the amp.
what's the song on 10:22 ?
That guy I’m calling eye ball Paul, because the whole video all he did was eye ball lee lmao.
Yeah Mr Big!
Is it 10 watts or 5 watts?
5
iamrichlol
10watts. The speakers are 5W each
que cosas ! una tostadora super sofisticada ...que sonidazo
very nice...thank you
Very informative!

This is actually 10w. All the THR amps run two 5W speakers. The 5 part of the name is a little misleading.
that Mr.Big's song.. SOLD!!
Thanx i came to know d song by ur comment..
I love mr. big I love Paul Gilbert!

Harold use the delay setting and use tap tempo button quickly, it will give a tremelo effect.

R U for real guy. This thing sounds great. U can do coffee house gigs and even gig with a full band. I use it live and I get compliments every gig.
spada 60. I deal in facts, not defamation of character. Why don't you upload a video of yourself strumming heavily on it? Just a thought.

Ha ha - no, those are the ones we kept from the original production run.
is it 10 amps or 5 amps?
+noonster55 It's 10 Watts.
Has anyone tried this with a piezo solidbody?
Great question! I have an 82 Gibson Chet Atkins CEC, solid body nylon. How would this amp do for that?

Nice demo. It is a pod with speakers. You guys dont really need to talk for 5.5 minutes befoer playing it
agreed
If anyone uses that much reverb you ned to see a doctor ..get to A&E if you have to but just go!

Blah blah to much talking!
