  • The Coffee & HEMA series examines a range of different topics in Historical European Martial Arts. I try to make a point about an important area in the time it takes for my coffee to brew in the morning. All opinions are my own, and are based upon my several years of experience in running clubs, teaching classes and organising tournaments.
Wrapping up my mini-series on tournament design, and answering one of the submitted questions in video where I was asked about my "favourite" tournament system. While I don't strictly have one, I talk in this video about the "Summer Sword Shenanigans" ruleset that I designed to explicitly tackle many of the considerations I have discussed in this series. As well as explaining the ruleset I go through some strengths and weaknesses and how it targeted specific issues.
You can find the written ruleset here:
    docs.google.co...
    In Video form:
    Rules: • Summer Sword Shenaniga...
Scorecard Demo: • Summer Sword Shenaniga...
If you would like me to cover a particular topic in a future video you can submit a question here:

Thank you for answering so in-depth! Saw the Sword Shenanigans system video a while back and quite liked the design and how it does tackle a lot of issues, so this elaboration is really useful for maybe trying it out here in Berlin.
In which way were the swiss rounds more work than expected?

If you do try it out let me know how it goes :)
The problem with the swiss rounds was that scorecard didn't *quite* automate it. I had to create separate tournaments for each swiss bracket and then for each round manually add people to the correct pool.
Scorecard has since added some features like divisions, pool rankings and pool-per-tier that have made it easier - although a couple of those features need small updates to make it work perfectly.
I'm running the beginners longsword at Wessex League Oxford next weekend with a pools->swiss structure and will see if this works well and feedback to HEMA Scorecard on fixes.
If the changes get made I'll do a video on how to run it.
