Thank you Jamie O'Brien for telling me to use use a longboard soft-top to learn how to surf and so that I could catch lots of waves to get good at surfing........ I truly enjoy longboards now and looking forward to finally learning shortboard surfing...
For all you guys that are going to try surfing for the first time and have made up your mind to become a Surfer, please watch all of Jamie O'Brien videos where he as an elite professional Surfer still rides longboards when the waves are firing or when they suck just to mix things up it seems like....
I used to scoff at the idea of riding a really big soft top surfboard but now I realize that was the wrong way to think and the perfect way to learn how to become a surfer by learning on a big big big soft top surfboard....
For all you guys and girls that are new to surfing, please don't try to learn on a shortboard, please just go get a 9-foot soft top or 10 foot soft top but no less than 8 foot soft top and get real good at surfing and then work your way down because the bigger the board the easier it is to learn how to surf and the more waves you will catch which will make you a better Surfer so when you finally do go down to a smaller board you'll be more ready for it and the struggle of learning how to ride a shortboard surfboard will be easier and the learning curve will be faster because you already know how to surf but just making minor adjustments to learn how to ride a smaller surfboard.
I'm speaking from my own personal experience and have ridden a 10-foot, a 9-foot, a 8-foot and I'm finally down to 7-foot surfboard to learn how to surf better and the journey is fun at every size surfboard because it's all about catching waves and having fun, not struggling on a surfboard you're not ready for but being patient and learning how to surf first then working your way down to the size surfboard you want to be your daily surfboard and to become the radical Surfer that you want to become...
