Beyond the Corvette | Exploring GM's Lesser Known Roadsters

- This video is about the Un-Corvettes; The other 2-seat cars that GM produced ranked in order from slowest to quickest with one of them emerging as quicker than all the others. Do you think you know which one we’re referring to?
We take a retro look back at the handful of 2-seat roadsters and sports cars that General Motors produced over the years besides the Corvette that are almost all forgotten. Some were very cool and fun to drive while others bombed with buyers and critics alike and none of them are in production anymore.
Watch the video for a fun look back at some GM 2-seater goodness from the past where we name one of them the quickest of them all and don’t forget to subscribe to our channel to and click the notification bell.

I'm here for the Fiero

2J swap into a Fiero: make it fast, _and_ reliable.
Heck, swap the Ecotec 4 cylinder from the Solstice into a Fiero and it would be wicked fast. Although in the later model they went with the wrong V6 they should have went with 3800 they would have made a beast out of it with that
Same
@@NaruSanavai no my friend keep it gm chevy small block or big block still very reliable and decently powerful a 2j is overkill
Every time I see a Cadillac Allante I always remember Kelly Bundy & her Bundy Bounce as she says "the new Allante"! I had an new '86 Fiero GT & it was a great car & very fun to drive! A chic I was dating in 2009 had a Pontiac Solstice & I really dug that car - PEACE LOVE n HIPPYNESS ✌❤☮
As a Sky owner for 9 years, I know I am very happy with mine........
Do you have the redline or the base
@@bmacster1985 I have a Pontiac Solstice GXP w/stick, less than 30K miles and a couple performance mods making this one fun ride. Very few realize how great this platform and handle the curves which is what makes a true sports car.
@@2wrdr and they're shocked when you spank them in a sprint
I have owned mine for 7 years. Still smiling ear to ear. With the GMPP performance update. I can only imagine what it would have been today !
The Saturn SKY was a car of pure beauty! 🔥🔥🔥
The proposed 89/90 version of the Pontiac fiero would have been a LOT faster, with the Quad 4 base engine and LQ1 dohc 3.4 engine. Would have been a real seller if GM if hadn't pulled the plug.
it def had potential, and sporty looks. with a proper tuned engine, suspension, and a bit wider wheel base wouldve helped it alot.
I have 4 GT's, the 3.4 won't fit, it's too wide.
@@rogerweiland6384 But the 3.8 V6 will. A lot more power. Especially one of the supercharged ones from Buick. With a manual and smaller pulley they can do over 300hp.
Yeah they were scared of it hurting the f body and vette sales but I firmly believe it would
@@rogerweiland6384 Different 3.4l DOHC that was in the Z34 Lumina/Monte Carlo. Heavy engine iron block, interference with a timing belt, 200hp IIRC. Not sure if it's related to the 3400 ohv. Quad 4 would've fit the Fiero's personality.
Awesome video! Unusually good quality for RUclips!
Great video! All cool cars. Saturn is the best looking of the bunch.
7.7 seconds for 1988 isn’t too bad. Fiero would have been cool to see with the quad 4 from the beretta
IF GM HAD DID THIS, I'm sure there would have been aftermarket turbo kits to go with them.
Man I loved the Pontiac Fero GT and the Pontiac Solstice! They were beautiful. I really like Corbet's but would rather have one of those.
I’ve got a sky redline in my garage, we clocked the 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and it’s stock. The drawback is if you have to work on the engine, replaced the thermostat at 66669 miles, it was a pain in the butt. Still love her, gets a lot of attention for sure.
I also have a redline I am wondering if yours was performance boosted by the dealer witch was an option. I have taken mine to the track and I have gotten 0-60 in 4.4 Seconds giving my car around 312HP.
The Soltice and the Skye are what the Fiero should have been to begin with!
Actually, they were better because GM wasn't paying attention when they were built. They should have never been allowed to get that good according to the main rule of GM. None of the cars that are a Corvette will ever be allowed to be better than a Corvette or they will be shortly cancelled.
Loved my Saturn Sky Red Line. My wife cried when I sold it!
The Sky was sick when it came out. Pretty clean👍
Thanks for the content it was an awesome history lesson
In January 2005, I bought a $47,000 22 foot long "Airstream" travel trailer. In October of the same year, I decided to lose money trading it in on a "Mercedes Sprinter" van-based "Airstream Parkway" class B motorhome, which was then $90,000+. OUCH!!! 😱 In December, I stopped by the dealership to wish my sales lady a Merry Christmas. In the showroom was a brand new red and black "Pontiac Solstice" with a huge red bow across the hood. I sat inside and fell in love with it. Apparently, some guy had come in and bought it as a surprise for his daughter returning from college in Florida. Also apparently, they were hard to come by, and needed to be pre-ordered months in advance, with many dealerships heavily gouging prices. I kiddingly told my lovely sales lady that perhaps I would order one "next year"... Um...? She called me December 27th, explaining the girl couldn't drive a 5-speed manual transmission, so DID I WANT IT? UM...?!!! HELL YEAH, BUT HOW?!!! I JUST BOUGHT A $90,000+ RV!!! WHO WOULD LOAN ME ANOTHER $26,000+?!!! Well, surprisingly my credit union DID! Unfortunately, I lost my job, and was having major problems $810 per month for the "Airstream" loan, $400+ for the "Solstice" loan, plus $200+ for monthly insurance. Because "Solstices" were still nearly impossible to come by, the dealership happily agreed to buy mine back for what I owed on the loan. Um...? With only 1,400 miles on the odometer, I got the $18,000 to pay off the credit union. It was a fun car to own and drive, but pretty lousy on gas, and replacement 18" speed rated tires would've been incredibly co$tly when needed. Still, I miss that little gem... 😞😓😩😤😡
Wow, you gave it a shot, you got the experience it, hope you're better now.
The Solstice/Sky twins were super pretty roadsters, and the redline/GXP trim cars were decent performers, for the class.
As a Miata owner, I was excited to buy a Solstice until I learned that you can't put the top down with luggage in the trunk. I'd love to hear GM's explanation for why they thought that wasn't important. How does one go touring without luggage?
I just keep the top up
They made a solstice coupe that was better designed but only a thousand were made before pontiac went defunct
It was the only thing they could think of to make the Corvette better. Nothing that isn't a Corvette can ever be better than a Corvette in the GM family or it will have a limited life.
I purchased a 1990 Reatta new in 90 for 29k. Later bought another 1991 Reatta because they were just comfortable cars, 17 way power bucket seats, and loaded with options. Now have a 08 XLR Star Black edition.
Man I love the Sky. It's just gorgeous. I saw a little old lady in my nabe, lovingly washing hers. Arrest-me red, too. How cool is that?
love the Sky, still want one
Part of the demise of the Cadillac Allante was for all the money it did not have a power top. Go figure. Great walk back into American 2 Seaters Magna Lume. 👍👍
I love the solstice and I'd like to have one
I love my Saturn red line. Fantastic fantastic fantastic car with unbelievable great styling. Always right thumbs up from passerby’s
I have a friend who has a Sky it's a lot of fun to drive and I am not a GM person but if I found one for the right price I would pick it up.
Nice video. As a Chevy fan. Love it.
SATURN SKY REDLINE TURBO OWNER ❤️ FOR THE WIIINNN
Somebody in an automotive magazine said, The Buick Reatta is an answer to a question that nobody asked.
Rip😂🎉 I loved them all.
That fiero gt in 88 was actually pretty lethal. Interesting note about the sky!
The Corvette has become just another European looking sports car. No longer a Stingray!
Up front solstice. Now ill watch and see
The Fiero is the 1 that really gets my goat. It could of been something really special when it grew up. If they would of let it grow up. And of course they didn't. The last model year it was starting to flex it's teenage hormones 😆. Just think about? If GM would of let the performance engineers go & learn something from the performance guys in the '60's from Pontiac. Pontiac was the excitement brand for GM in the '60's. So yeah... It really really could of grown up to be the smallest bad ass on the playground.
They would have never been allowed to do that, it would have bled away some of the customers from the Corvette. And that isn't allowed to happen in GM. None of the other cars are allowed to be anywhere near as as good as it is. Chevy even turned a Pontiac into a Corvette. Pontiac made the Banshee.(The original one, and it would have been better the next 'Vette.) The people in charge told them no, to never do anything like it ever again and then turned the Banshee into the third Gen Corvette.
I had an 88 Fiero. It handled well, but the iron duke was slow.
You forgot to mention the Chevy SSR. I guess you could call it a truck but it was really more or less a 2 seater car with really long trunk because as a pickup truck it would be totally useless.
If they had offered a supercharger on the reatta which they had used on many of their other 3800 series v6 cars it might have been decent
and AWD... I had an 88 Reatta and loved it. We sold it when it had 225,000 miles on it!
Me and a buddy of mine took a Pontiac Firro and put a327 small block V8 cranking out 375 horse's in it now that thing was fuuuun to drive
I need to see kelly bundy do the bundy bounce in front of the allante
The sky is bad ass.
man that Buick with a Wang and a supercharger would be pretty dope imho
3:24 you gotta have the mo to make the grade!
Thats one fine Lady.
Had a Turbo Sky Red Line and loved it (manual trans). Outstanding sportscar that GM should've kept. New Vettes are too high tech and expensive, let alone the insurance costs, gas guzzle taxes and the like.
Me too. 😊
I guessed the solstice. I forgot about the sky.
what happened to the corvair ? it had a rear engine too. or was it not a 2 seater ?
I think the Corvair was a 2+2. Think they had (barely) functional rear seats.
@@dennismokry258 right . thank you. it was a cool lil whip. other than being prone to flames
Gotta be a solstice in the thumbnail
I would love to see buick make an EV 2 seater built for performance. Be a huge out of left feild since they only make SUVs right now but hinted at making EV sedans in the future.
Pontiac and Oldsmobile had a Styling Concepts cars back in the early Fifties that were to add or/ compete with Corvette!
Looks about the same as the original one!
There was a Dealer in Ohio that would take your stock Solstice and convert it to a V8!?
So I have heard!
The Fiero and Sky are my top two picks!
Leave to TH to Cancel everything Just when they get corrected!
They need to bring back the Sky@
I thought the Saturn Sky looked a lot better than the Solstice
Buick Reatta?
Right? Wondering the same…
i just wanna know what's the girl's name in the saturn?
I love the Pontiac Fiero, Cadillac Allante and Saturn Skye. The real reason why they got rid of the Fiero is that it was out selling the Corvette and chevy department had more power than the Pontiac department with in GM Corp. Same reason why Delorean left GM he got tired fighting with the politics in GM.
Though it was never a production car, back in 1954 GM's Oldsmobile Division built a prototype clone of the 1954 Corvette named the Apollo! Though using the exact same body as the Corvette, it offered things the Corvette didn't in details such as styling and increased horsepower (from what I have read, though not much has ever been wrote about it)!! Sadly the car was never produced and the styling made the Corvette look cheap, even at a time when the Chevy version was a full production car!!
Second
The sky and Pontiac version should have been called fierio, but gm has no clue
All of these cars are testaments to why GM went bankrupt. You get a great platform the designers and engineers make and then tame it down or cut corners to save money.
Too bad Buick didn't go through with the Bengal... It was pretty sharp. Unfortunately it probably would have been mechanically flawed considering the time-frame it was conceived in and the overall poor quality Buick had fallen to by that time.
First
Solstice owner
How does a car company as big as GM go bankrupt like they wasn't selling cars and trucks or something lol
Because they weren't selling cars... -_-
The 2008 recession caused a major drop in auto sales, that didn't fully recover until somewhere around 2014.
The Fiero was a knock off of the Fiat X/19.
GM seems to be stuck on a rock of stupid. The bankruptcy rescue did more damage than a full bankruptcy. But, what does one expect when government wankers decide what to keep or kill off. That and bean counters who don't understand the concept of giving a car a chance to build popularity after fixing it's flaws. I like the Sky. The Reatta looks good on the outside but the inside is awful. Like a beautiful fashion model with bad teeth.
American cars couldn’t get away from the old road barge designs compared to the European cars. They never handled well.
That Fiero interior was horrible.
