Super Mario Bros. 3 will always be one of my favorite Mario games ever. That game was really ahead of it's time and it also introduced various new characters and concepts that'd be later reused for later Mario games.
I’ve gotta say, I prefer the NES version because it has unique sprites for the kings transformations, unlike SNES and GBA, that reused sprites from other games like Super Mario Bros 2 or Super Mario World. But the cinematics in GBA are a really nice addition!

Water Land is probably another version of the Mushroom Kingdom in an alternate universe that Mario somehow managed to teleport into between World 2 and 3, and one day Mario became king of Water Land.

That sentiment SORTA loses its value when the King of Pipe Maze has been turned into a Piranha Plant in the original, when in the SNES and GBA versions, he got turned into a Yoshi instead.
I'd like the Kings from this game to come back in some way, shape or form... Feels weird to have them in such a popular game only to drop them like that.
While the original transformations are better, I’m glad they kept the King’s human designs. Especially how World 3’s still looks similar, but slightly different to Mario.
I think it’s supposed to be a reference to Nintendo themselves, considering that part of the map is based on the big four islands of Japan 🇯🇵 with the castle being where Kyoto would be and considering that Mario is Nintendo’s mascot, it makes sense he would be king
@@eeveeon4081 Nah I don’t think that’s the reason, also after I posted that comment I realised that the reason why world’s 3 king is Mario is because it’s Super Mario Bros 3, I felt like a genius when I found that out, but in retrospect I feel like that should be pretty obvious to come to that conclusion, so now I feel kinda stupid that I didn’t connect the dots
Like the older animal forms as some made since. (Seal for ice world and plant for pipe world) Not sure why they changed those to something that didn't fit the world theme.

I appreciate some of the changes made with the SNES one, like changing the spider in World 2 to be a Hoopster and changing the bird in World 5 into an Albatoss (and, while not the greatest resemblance, replacing the seal with a Monty Mole, maybe because of the nose resemblance), but I find it odd that other enemies were used in place of the Spike and Venus Fire Trap transformations in Worlds 3 and 7, and why the Dino Rhino was put in World 3 (SNES) when it would've made more sense to replace the dinosaur transformation in World 4 (NES).
Water Land's King looks so much like Mario! Bring on the theories about him being related to Mario and Luigi somehow. Also, it's interesting to notice that in the All Stars version, they replaced some of the animal sprites with references to 2 and even World. (And DK Jr.!) The Yoshi sprite here is almost dead-ringer for the sprite they would use for Yoshi's Island a couple years later.
Hmm.. the grass land king, looks far more like someone who lives in the desert than the desert king. Both versions. They should be swapped. Also, the Viking is king of the pipe maze and not Ice land? Such weird choices.

Yeah, those Koopaling cutscenes in fact can only be seen if you used an flute warp to skip worlds. When reaching them after beating the game, an exclamation mark graphic (!) appears on the top of the castle sprite that shows that the airship level hasn't beaten yet.
I feel so dump. I just realized, that the transformation of the king in Super Mario Bros Movie to mushrooms, was a reference to Super Mario Bros. 3's kings. He even turns back into the king on his thrown in the end of the movie, like in those clips.

Also, fun fact: Piranha Plant and Yoshi share the same World King while in different versions, NES and SNES, respectively. Hey Looygi, did you know that besides World 1, all the worlds in SMB3 had more unique names in the Japanese, NES PRG0, SNES, and GBA versions? They are as follows: World 2: Desert Hill World 3: Ocean Side (Sea Side for SNES and GBA) World 4: Big Island World 5: The Sky World 6: Iced Land (note the "D" in "Iced" ) World 7: Pipe Maze World 8: Castle of Koopa (Castle of Kuppa in Japanese Famicom, Bowser's Castle in GBA)
On the nes version, the transformed kings fit the world they belong to much better. Giant Land-> Dinosaur, Ice Land-> seal, Pipe Land-> Piranha sticking out of a PIPE!! This detail is mostly gone in the other versions.
Water Land is very interesting, the map were the castle is looks like Japan, the king is Mario and his transformation looks like a Kappa. Sky Land is a bird in both versions btw.

I wonder if the whole FX chip has something to do with it. I also find it really interesting Yoshi's Island was originally supposed to be an early SNES Donkey Kong game that ended up being scrapped.

Between the NES and SNES, Toad looks different, as do all of the kings.
Kings 1, 2, and 3 talk by blinking their eyes, and King 4 talks by swinging his feet.
In the GBA remake cutscenes, those same kings (annd still the other three, too) even open their mouths just before the Koopalings attack them.

The king of ice land was done dirt y in the snes, that seal was cute.
Seals are also associated with ice and snow.
The dog king was cuter.
