  • Today I take a moment to reflect on a mini-series I randomly caught on TV 20 years ago and it's stuck with me consistently to this day. Flaws and all.

I wouldn’t doubt that this series gets picked up by Netflix soon

For me, Dinotopia is what made me a big fan of dinosaurs. Not Jurassic park or all the other media.
I actually have a copy of the first book, with all the amazing & beautiful art.

I absolutely agree with your views on Dinotopia. I too have very good memories of watching it as a kid. Dinotopia and Jurassic Park were the reason I started studying paleontology. Oh and yeah the soundtrack soooo good I love Dinotopias main theme and the flying theme is wonderful as well.

It is a great mini-series. I watch it at least twice. Once on TV & another on a streaming app.

I was two months old when the show premiered, but I grew up watching the animated movie on DVD.

I have seen this movie loads of times, it's on my hard drive. Every time Zippo spoke, it was a case of I know that voice, now I know why.

I was away when this premiered and my brothers DVRd it for me (is that an old sentence lol). Proceeded to drive my family nuts with how much I ended up watching and gushing about it for the next few years 😂
Totally agree about the soundtrack, it is just so evoking and lends a great wondrous feeling.
And Zippo is the best character 👌

I have always loved watching dinosaur movies/TV shows and reading dinosaur books all the time when I was little. Here I am as an adult now and I still catch myself with an interest when it comes to dinosaurs 🦕

I remember this airing around Christmas in the UK, and it really drew me in with its spectacular array of locations like Waterfall City and the World Beneath. I looked up every bit of info about Dinotopia online, whether it was the show or the books, falling in love with it even more. This miniseries has some strong nostalgia for me, even if its not a that great an adaptation of the books.
I hope you do a review on other series, that would be a fascinating look at early 2000s fantasy programming. Better yet, if you have the books, those would make great material for a review/deep dive into the lore, worldbuilding, and illustrations of James Gurney.

The soundtrack, like you said, was absolutely fantastic. I just rewatched it last night and I agree with pretty much everything you said. I would point out that many of the transitions seemed rather jarring, like we'd go straight into a scene without any establishing shots, or else jump into or out of a conversation without really seeing how it started/ended. I noticed the same thing when I watched Gladiator, and notably, I was not watching the extended/director's/whatever cut, it was just the "normal" version. As such, I have a theory that it ran past the original runtime, that they had to trim it down to get it to just four hours, and that that trimmed footage probably included more Trex screentime.
Also why did none of the guards come for Cyrus after he STUFFED ZIPEAU IN A BAG AND DUMPED HIM IN THE RIVER. Or like a trial? Imprisonment? Literally not one other character cared in the least bit

Hold on I'm actually not done yet. Crabb. Crabb's motives were never explained. Genuinely. That also might have been covered in the trimmed footage. I also felt like his death was completely anticlimactic. I think they should have accidentally killed him in the scuffle then taken the submersible back together. Something should have gone wrong and they should have had to bail out and swim for the surface. The boys make it and they don't see their dad at first and they're freaking out but then he comes back up, with one of the bags of sunstones.
      OR
Much more simply, and again probably due to trimmed scenes, we should have actually seen the dude switch out the sunstone in the submersible to show that he no longer trusts Cyrus because the reveal felt like it came out of left field

Unpopular opinion but the Hallmark 'sequel' series (really a whole different separate show, just in the same universe) was more entertaining and watchable and character-driven, though less faithful to the book and the first miniseries. I know most in the Dinotopia fandom hate it, but I just find it so charming and fun, and tbh prefer the actors/chemistry/plots in it.

I do agree some of the acting especially the actress playing the new Marion was better, in the miniseries she was too robotic

Good review video 👍 i agree with all your opinions lol (cringe script at times, but well acted)
I remember going into my small town library in late 90's and discovered those books, it was beautiful. Then came the series which was so very cool. A remake would rival Jurassic Park and Avatar.
