This is a repair video for an Easy Sun Parasol, the manufacturer is Sun Garden. These high-quality parasols can easily be opened and closed with a crank. However, this parasol no longer opens and I'm assuming that the rope is ripped off. First I open the crankcase so that I can take out the old rope. Using a screwdriver I take out the three phillips screws. Next to remove is the crank handle, which for a hexagon socket is needed to get out the set screw. Then the crank handle can be pulled out. Now the cover of the crankcase can be removed carefully with a screwdriver. Next I lay down the parasol so that I can more easily reach the joint at the top. The joint part is riveted to the pipe, that's why I will take apart the joint itself to put in a new rope. For that, I first want to take out the screw up here, because the rope will run right through this joint. I'm loosening the screw first on one, then on the other side. Now the cover is loosened with the zipper and pulled down. Now four retaining screws are revealing that are to take out using a screwdriver. Don't forget the little locking screw, which is located in the middle tube. Now the parasol itself can be separated from the carrier arm. Watch out, the screws are difficult to remove and can fall into the component. Now you can pull this pipe of the joint. Here you can see the hole for the rope. Now you can carefully separate the top shell with a screwdriver. On the inside of the joint there sits a bearing bolt for the pulley that usually holds the rope.
Now I go back to the bottom crank case and take out the bolt here. Then, the roll with the old rope can be removed and pulled out of the tube. I'm taking off the old rope from the roll.
The rest of the ripped rope is still sitting in the middle of the umbrella. I'm taking that out by removing this plastic cover and then just pull out the rope. Using a tape measure I determine the total length of both pieces of rope. Overall, it is about 4.25 m in length which is 13.94 feet and 5mm in diameter which is 3/16 inch. I got a new rope that is a little longer which makes it easier to run it through all the parts and tie the knots at the ends. The new rope is about a quater inch in diameter which is the absolute maximum for this parasol to fit all the holes. Now I'm starting to insert the new nylon rope. I start here at the top and push it through to the crankcase. It can help to raise up the carrier arm so that the rope is hanging in the inside of the tube. Now the rope is pulled through and hanging out on both sides. I start to put the joint back together. For this I fit the pulley around the new nylon rope and then put the brass bolt in from the bottom. I'm making sure the rope is placed right in the notches and then place the upper part back on. Now the two screws can be put back in already. They are screwed into the bolt, which can rotate. That is why it is advisable to put in both screws at the same time as they tighten each other up. Now the sleeve can be placed back on. Inside the metal tube, which has to be placed next, there is a plastic part, through which the rope must be slided first. Putting this part back into the pipe is somewhat complicated since it has to fit exactly into the notches. After that I am sliding the tube back on. You should pay attention to the compliance of the threaded holes. I am reattaching the umbrella to the carrier arm. When the holes match you can put the four screws back in. On the inside of the umbrella I am now running the rope all the way to the bottom and attach it by making a knot. From here the rope pulls up the parasol later so make sure your knot is nice and tight. Now the cover can be put back on. For an easier reassembly of the crank role I put the parasol back into its stand. The other end of the rope must now be knotted to the role. Here I use just enough rope length so that the role still fits nicely into the housing. If the rope is too long, the space inside the housing wont be big enough and you will have trouble turning the crank later. Another common problem on these parasols is that the little eyelet breaks off the role. Then replacing the role or attaching the end of the rope differently will solve this problem. On the Internet this and other spare parts can be found for this parasol model. I am cutting up excess rope and melt the end a little bit. I hope this video helped you.

Reasonably accurate. And very helpful. I must have an older model. There's a pulley inside the head that isn't easy to feed new rope. I had to remove the head and manually feed and reattach. Also when reattached crank handle pay attention to which slot spring get inserted. If the umbrella doesn't stay open move to the other slot. Many thanks.

If you want to save yourself hours of frustation and possibly your marriage as well, simply attach the new rope to the old one (if you can reach it, I used box tape..) then feed it through by pulling it from the crank side. I just replaced my rope in lass than 20 mins. Works like a dream and saves you from having to take the whole umprella apart and putting it back together.

Your instructions are excellent so far. I did run into some trouble removing one of the three fixing screws under the protective cap. I was able to unscrew it, but it wouldn't come out of the hole (It was inset into the hole and wouldn't pull out). So what I did was I oiled around the screw head and used an exacto knife into the screw hole around the screw head to remove any plastic burs around the head of the screw. Then I used a magnetized screw driver to pull the screw out of the hole. I'm still in the process of replacing the rope.

Thank you! I've replacement the rope of my parasol with this movie as a guide.
I used a smal nylon cord with weight on it to drop it down the big pipe, because the rope curled there.

O.K., I figured out the problem with not being able to slide off the rib frame from the ball joint. There is a different kind of fixing screw head and fixing screw in one of the holes (looks more like a flat head when the other screws are phillips heads screws). It is a shorter screw that applies tension against the the ball joint, it doesn't go into a hole in the ball joint. So when I turned that screw only about a half of turn, it released the pressure against the ball joint tube and the rib frame slid easily off of the ball joint tube. Now I do see, as I am writing this comment, that Carl mentioned the fourth locking screw in his written instructions above. I didn't realize Carl had written instructions. The written instructions make Carl's video even more valuable. Hope this information helps you if you get stuck on this step in the rope replacement process like I did.

Most Sun Garden umbrellas use Phillips screws to hold the ball joint assembly together. Some models now have screws that have an impression in them that looks like an asterisk. These are #25 TORX screws. (Go figure!) You can find TORX drivers at the hardware store. Use magnetic drivers to install the screws. The screw will often miss the hole it goes into. It's a real nuisance to have it fall to the bottom of the inside of the hub.

Hi, Carl. In my case I cannot insert the rope as you do at 3:35. I used the cable camera and see inside that assembly right at the location of those two rivets. Looks like the rivets secure an axle with misplaced pully on it and it’s moving left and right as I bump on each side of the pipe... Looks like I will need to drill out those rivets to get inside of that tip assembly... Wondering if you had that experience... Thanks

Thanks for the tutorial. I wish my cranking section had 3 screws, I couldn't open it so I had to cut it open with a grinder. Darkness done cost me, so I have to try tomorrow to finish it.

Inside the elbow, that is rivited to the main arm, is a cord guide pulley that the cord has to be threaed to run over the top (4:40). How are you ensuring that the cord is threaded properly over that wheel?

I'm wondering the same thing. I fed it through and it never even comes out the other end. And I checked the sun garden video where they take the rivets out and there is another guide pully. So im not sure what to do. I can't get the rivets out.

Have you run into the problem of having a stuck frame on the ball joint where you can't get the frame to slide off of the ball joint? After removing all three of the fixing screws, I'm now trying to pull the entire frame down to slide it off of the ball joint and it will not slide off like it did in your video. I oiled around it just in case it is frozen with dirt onto the ball joint, hoping it would allow me to easily slide the frame off of the ball joint. Still No luck. Your expert advice will be appreciated. Thank you.

I had the exact same problem. I had to wack the crap out of it using a screw driver. It was really stuck. I haven't put it back together yet and am definitely worried.

    • @albertrichardson5114

There are four screws holding the joint together. Figure out where the fourth screw is when you only remove three. The screws can vibrate out of the assembly over time. You can find the screws that fall out inside the bottom of the hub below the empty hole.
I don't normally remove the tube when I replace Sun Garden cords, but it would be easier with the umbrella standing upright than lying on the ground. This approach uses the pole to steady the ball joint, and you don't have to turn the whole thing over just to get on the other side.

I am not able to remove the pipe off of the knuckle I've tried to slide it down and it is so tight it does not want to move I have hammered it I've chosen that and it is not moving therefore I am not able to separate the two parts to the knuckle to reveal the pulley . Any tricks to getting that pipe off

    • @albertrichardson5114
      @albertrichardson5114 8 лет назад +1

Removing the pipe can be really hard because dirt get into the joint & acts like glue. Shoot some WD-40 into the joint. Use the four mounting holes and the joint at the very top to get the lubricant under the tube. Turn the tube and pull to get it off. You may have to use a strap clamp near the top of the tube to turn it. Turning breaks the bond that holds the tube so tightly. Think of it as unscrewing the tube off the post. BTW - It is very important for you to make a mark on the tube that lines up with a mark you make on the ball. The video does not let you know that the parts in this assembly have to be lined up correctly. Make reference marks as you take things apart to make sure you put them back together turned just the way you found them.

You can slow the video play down using the RUclips video controls under settings and speed in the lower left hand corner of the video (the little settings gear). Also, use the written instructions, they help a lot when used in conjunction with the video. I found Carl's video and written instructions to be spot on when used together. It helps to have your laptop with the video and written instructions with you when you are working on the parasol. You can also download the repair instructions from Sungarden's Web site (see link in my reply to Dorayme above). If you are having trouble with any part of the instructions, reply back to me with the issue and I will try to help. I understand how frustrating maintenance like this can be, especially if it is your first time performing the repair. This was my first time too. I hope this helped.
