I haven't gotten past the trap question yet, but I think I know the trap: there are some circumstances in which you *should* treat one person more favorably than others -- if, for example, you're dealing with a bunch of drunks in the aftermath of a bar fight, and three of them are being rowdy, uncooperative, aggressive, and attempting to continue the fight with you. The fourth is looking embarrassed and apologizing for their friends' actions, trying to get them to calm down and behave. And, knowing their friends pretty well, they're even starting to get some results.
You would be a fool not to recognize the value in working together with the cooperator in order to secure better behavior from the others. This is a situation in which, *of course* you give one of them better treatment than the others. They earned that by presenting different *behavior* from that of the others.
What the question presumably had in mind, of course, is 'how would you ensure you didn't treat someone favorably for irrational -- or even perhaps discriminatory -- reasons. And sure, you have to actually answer that, but first you should dispose of the premise that it applies to every possible situation in which you might have a reason to treat one person differently from others. It doesn't.
