Some people have had success with applying paint on by hand, but I would highly recommend only AB/aerosols with this technique. If you want to go pure handbrushing, I also have a video on the hairspray chipping method, which works great with a dry/overbrush layer.

Try using a dark brown wash then using a light brown dry brush down from the chipped paint.

I assume the layer that goes over the salt needs to be a spray layer, but further colors...can they be brushed?
