This video is taken from the televised BBC Young Musician competition in 2018. After a year of 3 great BBC Young Musician finalists, Sheku Kanneh-Mason (cello), Jess Gillam (saxophone) and Ben Goldsheider (horn), Rob Burton competes against Maxim Calver and Lauren Zhang. This video is his grand final performance, following his success winning the woodwind category final.
Previous winners of the BBC Young Musician title read like a who’s who of some of today’s most well-respected classical musicians, including oboist Nicholas Daniel, cellist Natalie Clein, clarinettists Mark Simpson, Emma Johnson and violinist Nicola Benedetti. Former finalists include pianist Stephen Hough, Stephen Osborne and Barry Douglas, violinist Tasmin Little, pianist, conductor and composer Thomas Adès, flautist Juliette Bausor and trumpeter Alison Balsom, to name just a few.

Love how cinematic and high quality this is. And holy cow, you are a monster! Great tone/sound/intonation (unfortunately the clarinet near the beginning was really out of tune), incredible evenness of any run, and what a clear double tongue! I also love how sensitive your musicality is. You finesse everything in such a nuanced way. Truly spectacular!

i played the second movement on bari sax in high school and i must say i think the piano reduction is much better for that movement. maybe the brass just wasn't as strong in this recording (that's a question, because i think it was pretty good), but when the piano plays the low brass parts, the emotion feels much stronger.

Was just curious what setup you playing on. I saw a yahama neck but was that with a selmer alto? Also loved how it seemed you memorized the piece. No telling how much you had for the competition. I’m just getting back into playing again. Creston Concerto, the Ibert, and Descenclos are some of the pieces I played. But it was before putting up everything on RUclips. You’re gonna be grateful for having this up 15 years from now lol. Anyway I hope you won I have no idea. But I’m bias towards good sax players. And good job on the altissimo notes. Man very impressed.
Okay saw you got beat by a piano player but also saw NO ONE knows classical saxophone repertoire so of course you got screwed. Come over to America and you’ll be appreciated and envied by the US sax community. Lol

Carmine Santoriello of course. I play on a series 2 super action. I’ve been wanting to play on the jubilee line but the neck looks like a selmer. That’s why I was asking. Classical sax you want that dark rich sound and you change what you can to get it. Like for example used to play on another super action. Life changes I sold it. Now I have another one but to get a darker sound I now use a felt sax mute that holds down the vibration and dampens the brightness of my setup. Someday, probably over the summer, I’m gonna mess with my setup but I was curious what this kid was playing on cause I love his sound but was wondering was he mix matching too like we all sometimes do.

I also played on a Selmer alto but with a Yamaha neck, back in the day...I found it improved the intonation in the upper register compared to the original Selmer neck. It seems like a simple fix to just move the octave hole a hair, but who knows?
