Durham Cathedral is one of the most important buildings in Europe. Right at the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with the earliest ribbed vault in England and some suggestion that Islamic architects from the middle east were influential in its design. Most importantly, one of the most tranquil indoor spaces you will ever experience, simply an amazing place.

agreed, being local we've been going there every few weeks for 30 years, and there is always something new to see or learn. recently went to a Christmas play of the Christmas carol and a library tour of manuscripts from Bedes era... but mainly for the architecture and quiet peace... tranquil is the word CM

The Venerable Bede is known as the Father of English History, he was one of the early chroniclers of our history. He served in the monasteries of Monkwearmouth and Jarrow. Monkwearmouth was built by Benedict Biscop in 674, Bede served here from the age of 7. St.Peter’s church which is still standing is all that survives of the monastery that was raided by Vikings. Jarrow was built a few years after Monkwearmouth.
The Lindisfarne Gospels which is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book was written by the monks on Holy Island. It spent many years on show at Durham Cathedral but now resides at the British library in London. There has been many petitions to return it to Durham.

We found an amazing student apartment with an amazing view of the Cathedral, by the time we moved in the following year an enormous block of apartments had been built completely blocking our view. Regardless, good times in Durham.
If you’re in the North East much longer, head into Northumberland where there are loads of stops, Alnwick, Amble, Seahouses, Bamburgh to name a few, then hop over the border into Scotland if you fancy it.

There is a Roman amphitheatre and, a two level shopping area called the Rows. Chester has a cathedral, a horse race track and a wonderful zoo. I think you would both love it. Thanks for bringing me fond memories of Durham market. I was last there in 1969, when I bought what I took to be a picture postcard in a lovely old frame for a few pence. When I got it back to the college where I was studying Art I dismantled the filthy frame, which looked as though it had spent decades in a small room with a coal fire, and discovered to my surprise and delight that the "postcard" turned out to be an exquisite small oil painting dated 1912 of a Northumbrian hill scene in winter. It still hangs in my home and reminds me of the many happy years spent in County Durham at that time!

Pleased that you got to explore more of the local area! Would suggest trying to go to bamburgh if you get the chance. Massive medieval castle on some beautiful coastline next to an amazing beach 🙂

I love Durham, I spent some of my childhood living there but I am not too far away in Darlington. I love the Cathedral and a walk by the river x 👍

The North East of England is packed with history from Roman times though to the industrial revolution next time Hadrian's Wall and the Northumberland Castle route are a must. So happy you enjoyed the area I'm very proud to call home.

Your son must be smart because the oxford, cambridge and Durham universities are the pinnacle of education in Britain and maybe the world. Those are incredibly prestigious universities.

Loved your video. I was born in Durham & live 50 mins walk from the Cathedral. Its so true that you have highlighted interesting things in Durham & the Cathedral that locals like me, after endless visits , are still missing. Well done. I got a chance to visit Grand Rapids, Michigan because a family lived in Durham for 1 year as part of a Durham University exchange. P.s. the fish & and chips looked wonderful. Keep up the good work.

You should have stopped off at Bede's church (St Paul's) in Jarrow some bits of it go back to the 7th century, very atmospheric. Also, Beamish Open Air Museum is worth a look.
Lindisfarne & plenty of serious castles to the north of the river.

It's so nice to see you in my hometown of Durham! I really hope you enjoy your visit. Not too sure if you had chance to visit Durham Castle, it's only about a 30 second walk from the Cathedral and we offer guided tours if you pre-book. Full of history just like the Cathedral; the Castle is now owned by Durham University but was once home to the Prince Bishop of England who was essentially the 2nd King 'of the North' who even had the power to issue his own currency 🥰

Glad you made it to the coast! Seems a bit surreal seeing streets just down the road from where I live on your channel. There's so much going on in Tynemouth and North Shields. The night life is quite something with plenty of bars and restaurants to frequent. There's the Priory, the Pier (which technically is a Breakwater), the market (which is on the metro station) and the many shops. Then there's the beaches which are particularly beautiful in the summer months 👌
