  • Representatives Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Jake Auchincloss (D-MA) discuss why the United States must strengthen its technological advantage in areas like AI, develop next-generation manufacturing capabilities domestically, and rethink how Silicon Valley does business with China. Gallagher is Chair of the House Select Committee on the CCP, on which Auchincloss also serves.

Can America just worry about America?

Turns out burying your head in the sand never works. You go to China or they come to you.

Do you want us to? Game that out for a bit. What would it look like if America turned its back on the world? If you're American, you can kiss any thought of Green Tech or Climate Change agreements goodbye. If you love your iPhone, buy a few now: they are the last you will ever see... except they won't really work because elements we need to maintain the infrastructure will be gone. Prices for goods won't just double or triple, they will simply disappear. BASIC things will also disappear because nobody in America remembers how to make them: Shoes, cloth for clothing, metal for metal things, plastic for plastic things... how to separate and refine and process chemicals and elements, how to even mine for those things in the first place: We forgot how to do it and the people who did it are retiring and dying. We don't even know how to live in trees eating nuts and berries, anymore!
If you live in China or Russia, your last hope of NOT living in China or Russia or NOT dying on a war front or just NOT starving to death went out the window as we closed our doors. Both countries are cursed by geography to import the basics... or CONQUER their neighbors for it. If you think you belong to an untouchable 'Elite' class, you clearly have not been paying attention to what is happening around you to family, neighbors, neighborhoods, entire cities! How many of the elite are suddenly experimenting with the ability to fly (out windows) hold their breath underwater (in their bathtubs) or even flee (with gold bars in their shoes)?
Game it out! Tell me your alternate version of how the world will look if America just goes home.
