  • An $18 billion legislative package to cut land-owning Texans’ property taxes cleared a key House panel on Tuesday and is headed to the chamber floor for a vote later this week - setting the long-awaited compromise deal on a fast track to the governor’s desk after months of agonizing negotiations between the state’s top Republicans.

I'm skeptical that anyone will see any actual savings. My county dropped taxes one year and raised the property value up so that we ended up paying more while they touted how great they were for "lowering" our taxes. I expect that's what will happen if this does get signed into law.

They can lower the rates all day long. the problem is not so much the rates, but moreover, it's the appraisals. Hey Taxpayer, we're gonna save you $1300 in property tax (fine print: based on todays appraisals). Then they will just increase the appraisal values and you'll STILL pay the same amount. Do you REALLY believe that they will cut their own revenue? Especially a tax that you CAN'T control yourself. Property tax is a RENT we must pay to a landlord we did not chose. If we must pay someone else in order to OWN property, then we don't really own it. And that's not FREEDOM. Taxation in all forms is THEFT. Hey Texas, eliminate the property tax and see what happens. Rents go down. That's a biggy. I have one rental property and the taxes are MORE than the rent. It's frankly criminal.

Why can't they simply just lower the tax rate? The tax rate in the austin area is about 2%, why not make it no more than 1%. My parents used to pay 0.80% in Louisiana (which is the highest property tax in the state) and it still was easily afforable. I think property taxes should be capped to no more than 1% of the property value. For me, its fair.

They are called PROGRESSIVE tax rates for a reason. It's because the progressives wanted it that way and convinced us all it was a good thing. It's not. See what happens? The problem is that the TAXES will not be lower due to a RATE reduction.
