This is why I will not buy Morgans or Peace dollars from estate sales. I used to be a raw coin guy but now that so many fakes exist out there I am a slab guy.
8 seconds in , that's the sound of nickel, brass, copper - nothing sounds like silver :) each metal has a voice that can't ever be copied ... I was going to do a video talking about some of the music, Hz ideas with it , when I have the time... Thanks for sharing :)
I have my nice “drawer of shame” with about a dozen fake dollars from the older days when I didn’t know what was going on. I always show them to new collectors when I get the chance.
Better and better fake coins are the largest danger the hobby has. I mean, do you really think those big online dealers are taking a tremendously close look at every mercury dime that passes through? If you had 2 good fakes per roll, the odds that they are picked out would be slim.
Sometimes the fakes just look too good to be true. Like you'll have a circulated XF, but it appears to be mark-free. There are legitimate circulated coins that had lucky lives and don't have any prominent dings, but if you look at them under magnification, there will be tiny scrapes and scratches everywhere. But often the fakes don't have these marks.
You are in my head...I'm thinking at the beginning of the video, "that sounds like tin." Then you said the same thing! Next time you do one of these, I have a great CC Trade fake to include.
In my eBay experience, the steel ones seemed to come from Eastern Europe while most of the others were from China. I find the ring test the most useful when a scale isn't available. Finding fakes started me collecting chopped trade dollars. I just thought they were cool because of the history they represented, and I made a good profit when they became more popular. The same thing happened with errors, I thought they were cool because they were different, then they became valuable.
Etsy & Temu, selling these like Crazy! Why a Sigma Scale costs so much! 2 years ago, they were $500, now they‘re going for $1K. But yes, keep any fakes as examples to show & tell the difference.
Great video The best defense against counterfeit coins is education and knowing to ID the design of the coins you like/ want to buy, counterfeiters can make th3m😢 none magnetic and even have the same weight and measurements but almost impossible to replicate an original design/ strike from the us mint.
Temu sells (copies) few bucks, and you got look alikes-- not to gain wealth but to protect your own assets- if robbed, toss over fakes/ most hoods would never figure it out- and you survive for couple bucks you paid for ounce of gold/copy
Gave up collecting U.S. coins in the 1980’s because of too many counterfeits. A few years ago the Chinese were reported to be producing 100,000 counterfeit coins a month.
I have a 2023 Gold $50 Eagle I purchased off Temu just to see. Meaning to do a video on it- it is pretty good. Main giveaway is obverse / reverse flip is sideways and not roll over. They have pretty much anything you can think of in fake. Was very shocked it got through Customs, because it came in a package by itself. There are 2023 $1 Eagles on there also... Can't believe it comes through the mail.
Many have COPY in small letters hidden on the coin. Others have 1/2 ounce on the one ounce coins. They make them slightly different, to not be charged with counterfeiting.
Ok I'm a newbie but I noticed on the mercury dimes the real one you showed, the back of the real one the ax the horizontal line I could still see some of the lines even though it was circulated. The fake one the horizontal lines weren't even there, I would think the fake being to look less circulated would have those lines. Remember I'm newbie just trying to learn maybe it's just me.
It's to the point I can't buy non-slabbed coins. And certainly not online in most cases. OR - what is the best, cheapest device to carry or own. Is a sigma a failsafe? But it's expensive for a casual even monthly collector.
Fake slabs are also common and serve to hide the virtues of the coin itself. You can get away with a slight variation in thickness on a coin in a fake slab. That assumes they aren't using the real materials as well. Make an AU barber dime out of .900 silver and put it in what looks like an old pcgs holder and ....
No, the Sigma can also be fooled. It's only one of many tests required including measuring and weighing. There are some plated coins that fool the Sigma. I've seen a video on RUclips where a guy demonstrates it being fooled. The Sigma is an important tool, but not failsafe. They do have a more expensive tester now that does better than the Sigma.
What is even scarier is when the fakes are made with 90% silver! They look, feel, sound and weigh more realistically. It may get so bad, that the fakes get so good, that it will take someone highly experienced,to spot them. This is not good for the coin hobby.
Smaller denoms are way easier to fall for too! Weighing and measuring a coin is usually the best choice for a budget. Due to the weights and densities it's impossible to get a coin with the right size and weight, it will always be off... Terrifying looking at some of those listings on Amazon. They can stop a counterfeit Coach bag but can't make these dbags stamp copy on their fake currency.
It's a shame! The fakes are getting harder to detect. A great reason to shop at a good LCS. Although I purchase quite a bit from reputable on line dealers, There is nothing like a good LCS. Thanks Ben!
YOU DID NOT SHOW US HOW TO KNOW IF A COIN IN REAL You gave us little to no information! The SILVER WILL SLOW DOWN a magnet sliding down it side- even if real silver- we learned 0 from you video! A waste of time watching.
Crazy! I hate to admit it but I probably would have been fooled by a lot of them...😮

To the point now where I only buy graded coins with a matching photo on the grading site.

Great public service. Thank you.
I use all my fakes and practice making coin jewelry with. Punch a hole in the middle andmake a ring. These can never fool anyone again
I saw some obviously fake draped bust halves (dated 1795!) on eBay and reported them-- and they absolutely refused to remove the sale. Beware!
I hate seeing garbage in the hobby. The only use for such things is to fill a decoy safe. Even then I don't like having them in the house
Remelt them
Great education on fakes. Always like to have a few more tricks on identifying what is not real out there!
All those fakes....😮
No wonder so many beginners & novices gravitate towards slabbed coins!
Extremely informative, love when you share your knowledge!!

Thanks Ben. Good education!
Hey Ben, there's a live auction tomorrow at the Carson City Mint

Multiple ads on Facebook hawking this Chinese-made stuff everyday. Every single day. Reporting does absolutely nothing.

eBay is known for the stuff and it makes me sick to my stomach. I won't buy a coin now unless it's graded.
Good stuff Ben thanks for sharing.

Thanks Ben!
Hate counterfeits! Love your videos! Thanks!
Wow, all the way down to dimes dang, glad I buy from people like yourself and a few others, thx for sharing have a good day
Thank you. 😢
Dang them some pretty good looking fakes
Those dimes are pretty convincing. I would have to see them in person to really know. The barber looks a hair bigger than what it should be.
I'm one of those that would have trouble telling that some of those are fakes.

pewter,white brass and alum
I'm a big-time collector. I'm at the point where im upgrading my mercs to blast-white and I still wasn't able to see how those 2 mercs were fakes
Very scary and it makes me hesitant on future purchases.....thank you Ben!!! (sincerely AND sarcastically)

Thanks for the nightmare fuel Ben! I didn't need to sleep tonight anyway...😳
I must be a common guy because they looked pretty good to me. If you’re buying on EBay you obviously can’t manipulate these examples.
The weed scale don't lie
I only buy certified coins in high grade and price.

I have a solution to the problem at hand. . . Just ONLY buy certified -- preferably PCGS, NGC or ANACS!
great, now im freaking out that my peace dollars off of ebay are fake >
I buy my silver from a dealer - who I know is selling real silver!
