It's super unique and something Canon and Sony do not have. This might be a good lens for birders, nature photographers and some sports shooters. Same but I am far from wealthy and I didn't have any issues spending my 12 year old daughters college fund, (I have time to replace it), lol! I have the 500mm f/4E VR FL and 200-400mm f/4G VRII lens along with 24-120 f/4S, and 70-200FL. I use the D6 mostly, but I just added a Z7 II and 24-120mm f/4S and I'm blown away by the $1200 5x zoom lens, it's as sharp as my 500FL, but a wide-to-tele zoom? Freaking nuts how improved the wider angle lenses are. I've had the amazing opportunity to also test a sample copy of the 600mm f/4 S 1.4x TC, and it's unbelievable. I have shot almost every Nikon and Canon modern day-20 years past, super=tele primes and zooms. I've shot the entire Nikon lineup as far as super-tele's are concerned. Before the new 600mmm f/4S, I'd rate the Nikon lenses from sharpest to least sharp, but all are crazy sharp so take with a pinch of salt. Number 1. Nikon 800mm f/5.6E VR FL ( A notch above the rest, for sure) Number 2. Nikon 600mm f/4 S (Video reviewed here, is now the sharpest lens, only second to the 800FL, "Baby Jesus!" Number 3, my personal favorite the Nikon 500mm f/4E VR FL, Number 4. Nikon 400mm f/2.8 S 1.4x TC, Number 5. 400mm f/2.8E VR FL, Number 6: The amazing Nikon 120-300mm f/2.8E VR FL, which is crazy, crazy sharp for a zoom! Lastly the Nikon 180-400mm FL (Which is crazy sharp, as well... so please no offense) I took notes and I have files to back all of thiops up, but there is a bit of subjectiveness and I did leave out the Nikon 600mm FL, only because I have used one, but it was either a poor copy or just not as sharp as the others, and certainly was less sharp than my 500FL, more in line with the 200-400mm VRII, which I use a lot, but more like the 180-400FL, so last place for me, but don't get me wrong, people love the 600mm f/4E VR FL. It's a $12,500 lens so you should love it. The only reason I bought the 500mm was because the 400FL and 600FL are still big and heavy, regardless if they lost some weight and for me the 500FL is better optically, than the other two. I had the 800FL, but I only bought it for resale, I got it for $7,100 USD before the 800pf was announced and sold it for a profit. It was by a noticeable amount, the sharpest and best image quality I'd ever seen, by a fair bit. Compared to this newest 600mm f/4S VR 1.4x TC is phenomenal and thankfully if you prefer the 600mm f/4 over the rest, you now can enjoy world class leading sharpness. It's a tad sharper than the 500FL and nearly as sharp as the 800FL, so at least with Nikon you get what you're paying for, and I don't regret my two big lens purchases, never ever. I would but them buy them again!

    Every time Jared puts out a Nikon video he gives some little detail revealing he’s not using the best practices with the Nikon camera. Which leads to his complaints consisting of things that just aren’t really issues for most people.
    And despite that, and him still complaining about the autofocus being in third place, it appears he got every shot in spot on focus!

Cameras have so many options and menu settings that it is easy to make mistakes. It helps if your comments about the shortcomings of a camera are based on the actual camera’s limitations not your own oversights. That said the Z9 is a minefield of choices and having lots and lots of choices often complicates the photographic process. I am still weighing up my Z9 experiences and working out how to use firmware 3.0 - I am still finding it a brilliant camera.

    Jared, you will probably never read this or respond back to it, but thank you first as you helped me decide on the Z9. It just checks all the boxes for me. Also, thanks for the suggestion about Allen's camera as that is where I found it. I have been shooting wildlife for about two years now on my Canon 80d and absolutely fell in love with it. I know you diss birding photography, I'm not sure what kind of birding your referring too, but I think the best way to understand wildlife photography is to immerse yourself in it. I am a disabled veteran and get a tremendous amount of peace from it. I love being away from people and capturing a mallard duck landing in a slough or taking off. It is just magical, and I'm talking in the wild, not at the local park. I take pictures of whatever I find and that includes squirrels, deer, moose, pheasants, and hopefully some day bears and elk, etc. I would love to take pics of polar bears and artic foxes also. Being from North Dakota, hunting and fishing is in my blood. We have done it as long as I can remember, and now thanks to my college photography professor I can add photography to that list also. Photography is such an open book to me as it is not limited to just wildlife, but it is by far my favorite.

If you want to make that remark then go out on a 30 mile hike In The Appalachians at 14 degrees F and then I’d put some stock in weight savings claims. I own the VR version and never once even thought about the weight. I’ll never convert to mirrorless because it offers me nothing. I was happy with the 11 AF points of the d2xs at the race track… never held me back. Kids these days all want the wsywig laziness and eye autofocus lions and tigers oh my.

    • @billr3053
      @billr3053 Год назад

      Both the 400mm F/2.8 and the 600mm F/4 are already close to their diffraction limit. Slapping on the TC 1.4 internal will not get you better resolution. In fact it will reduce the effective megapixel count to 30 or even down to 15 megapixel sensor equivalent respectively (down from its 45mp). That’s just using math with theoretical zero other losses. You also have to remember the TC inserts extra optical elements into the path with their requisite contrast reduction and aberrations. Sure you get an apparent magnification boost but not absolute fidelity. TCs are versatile but ultimately I would rarely use them in my opinion. Most of the time they’re an anachronism from the film camera era when the photographer had very little control over the enlarger (printing process). Now we have digital tools such as in-camera cropping or post processing digital zoom with sharpening.

    Canon bodies have had since the 1Dx days a feature where it maintains the exposure with changes to aperture. Super handy for a lot of things not least of which is using an extender or in my case wedding photography as I will hop around the aperture for DOF reasons. One second I'm shooting the bride wide open at f/1.2 and another I'm at f/5.6 getting 2 or 3 people in focus. Or if I swap lenses, like going from my 85mm f/1.2 to my 70-200mm f/2.8. I most likely still am shooting the same exposure for both but with different apertures.
    You can see how handy this is and Nikon should really do something similar.

    • @RayDeLuca
      @RayDeLuca Год назад +4

      The Nikon does what you are talking about which is correct exposer when one of any of the Exposer triangle changes. What Jared is suggesting no camera does which is when the TC is switched on the camera would pick that up from the TC. What you are talking about is when one of the dials is changed on the camera the camera reacts to keep exposure. I think because the TC that's built in is mechanical the camera has no way of knowing because the change in light is on the Light sensor in camera and not the dials

      I cant understand why someone want that to happen in completely manual mode. For that you have Shutter and aperture priority.

    • @johnrus7661
      @johnrus7661 Год назад +1

      @@avinashrai11141 Shutter and Aperture Priority are relics of the past and only old school photogs use them because they are so used to using it. They serve no function today with auto ISO. But the Canon aperture exposure compensation feature maintains the current exposure when say you change the aperture or lens with another aperture. It doesn't rely on metering which is key, it is simply maintains the current exposure when you change the aperture. Which is exactly what Jared wants. So his exposure doesn't jump around in consistent lighting like he was explaning. Just instead of being connected to the flick of the switch, it is for any aperture you want. Which is more versatile especially if you change lenses, which is kinda why we buy interchangeable lens cameras in the first place.....
      Real pro's use manual most of the time, old school and new school. Next most useful is auto ISO, you select your ideal shutter speed and aperture you want and the camera automatically selects the lowest possible ISO to make the exposure. Shutter priority or Aperture Priority requires you to use a higher ISO than you need in order to have enough buffer for when the exposure changes because of the other two settings. Both those modes were made during the film era when ISO was fixed, they are just a carry over to digital. And also useless.
