I will gladly answer this comprehensively. I'm Scots and ( unusually among our population ! ) love old Scots music. The orchestra, choir and singer is bizarrely, Indonesian. I don't disapprove of this at all. If they liked the song so much and were committed enough to learn how to sing it in ancient Gaelic then kudos to them ! They did a good job. The song is about the old Stone of Destiny that sat under the coronation throne of Scots kings. In more modern times with Scotland being part of the UK and sharing a common monarch this is no longer a thing. The stone was transferred to Westminster Abby in London and that removal is controversial, arguably unfair and pointless. In the 1950's a group of students succeeded in stealing back the stone for Scotland but it was later recovered. There was a movie made of it called Stone of Destiny, featuring Robert Carlisle. Its fun ! For excellent Scottish performances of the song search on RUclips for the song title or Kathleen MacInnes and you'll find a few. A more modern and upbeat version can found by the band Manran. The song title to copy and paste is Òran na Cloiche. You can find a version with Kathleen MacInnes on a playlist of mine, a video from the BBC series Transatlantic Sessions, featuring musicians from Celtic parts of northern Europe along with north American musicians whose music has significant Celtic roots. If you just click on my RUclips name you'll find a public playlist of Scottish music. At the moment 9 pieces but I'll add more as time goes on. I hope you like it. By the way Kathleen MacInnes starred as a real character from the stone abduction saga, as a teacher in a remote community caught up in the affair, in a low budge docu-drama called Interregation of a Highland Lass. But Stone of Destiny is a proper movie and more worth seeing. For an English translation of the song, go to celticlyricscorner .net and you'll find a translation there. I dare not put it as a link in case the YT bots delete it for having external links. Hope that helps. I typed this over a bottle of Peroni. Buy Peroni - good for you !
I'm sure I replied to you a few weeks ago but for whatever reason RUclips or the channel holder had it disappeared. Possibly due to the presence of clickable links. It was a long reply with an explanation of the song and references to other versions and to films of the story. The language is Scots Gaelic. The performers are actually Indonesian ! Kudos to them for taking an interest in this and learning to sing the words. Only a tiny percentage of Scots people are able to speak Gaelic nowadays. The song tells the story of the Stone of Destiny, a mysterious stone that used to sit under the crowning throne of Scots kings. Some time after the crowns of Scotland and England were merged as one the stone was moved to England, which many considered to be an outrage. In the 1950's a group of Scottish nationalist students hatched a plot to retrieve the stone back to Scotland. They succeeded for a while but were found out. The prosecution was dropped due to embarrassment and political expediency. The song Oran Na Cloiche immortalises it. A couple of films have been made of it. Look for the title, Stone of Destiny. The best song performances of the song Oran Na Cloiche are to be found by looking up Kathleen MacInnis, here on RUclips. I won't give a link to a lyrical translation, in case doing so gets this comment deleted. So here is a copy & paste of the words in English for you : STONE OF DESTINY The Stone that my grandmother And grandfather used to talk about Has returned as it left My brave Stone And I don't care whether it's in Kerrera Callendar or Calvay As long as it's in Steep, rugged Scotland 'S i u ro bha ho ro hilli um bo ha Hilli um bo ruaig thu i hilli um bo ha 'S i u ro bha ho ro hilli um bo ha To be put in a place of refuge Which will conceal it safely So that they can't, they won't manage to Remove a single fragment of it The Stone that was lost to us Prised from their grasp And certainly, if it has returned That's a very good thing Let us swear by our hand Each and every one of us That we will allow nothing to endanger The man who unloosed it And dared to rescue it From an unpleasant place If they lay hands on him We'll need to be strong And strike a blow for him Using steel The Minister was so sorrowful When he woke that morning His eyes bleary As he turned out Walking the floor Sighing and praying And looking at the nook Where he'd found the Stone missing There was much pacing And running 'round the floor And all he could say was "Where did the Stone go?" And, "By the Holy Mother What will I do tomorrow I know the Queen Will be beside herself" Said he, looking deathly pale "I'd never have believed It could have been raised from the floor By someone no bigger than a wasp Something is to happen to me And Heaven help me The man who unloosed it Must be as strong as a horse 😀 Now if you are interested in trying out more old or traditional Scottish music I have made a playlist of it ( currently about 40 tracks, nothing of mine as its just a playlist ). STONE OF DESTINY
The Stone that my grandmother
And grandfather used to talk about
Has returned as it left
My brave Stone
And I don't care whether it's in Kerrera
Callendar or Calvay
As long as it's in
Steep, rugged Scotland
'S i u ro bha ho ro hilli um bo ha
Hilli um bo ruaig thu i hilli um bo ha
'S i u ro bha ho ro hilli um bo ha
To be put in a place of refuge
Which will conceal it safely
So that they can't, they won't manage to
Remove a single fragment of it
The Stone that was lost to us
Prised from their grasp
And certainly, if it has returned
That's a very good thing
Let us swear by our hand
Each and every one of us
That we will allow nothing to endanger
The man who unloosed it
And dared to rescue it
From an unpleasant place
If they lay hands on him
We'll need to be strong
And strike a blow for him
Using steel
The Minister was so sorrowful
When he woke that morning
His eyes bleary
As he turned out
Walking the floor
Sighing and praying
And looking at the nook
Where he'd found the Stone missing
There was much pacing
And running 'round the floor
And all he could say was
"Where did the Stone go?"
And, "By the Holy Mother
What will I do tomorrow
I know the Queen
Will be beside herself"
Said he, looking deathly pale
"I'd never have believed
It could have been raised from the floor
By someone no bigger than a wasp
Something is to happen to me
And Heaven help me
The man who unloosed it
Must be as strong as a horse
😀
