    By far the clearest and fairest review I have seen on the topic thanks.

    Hi,
    I just bought my own Osmo and I appreciate your honest and genuine review, as some reviews can get muddled in fascination and novelty. I bought this because as far as 4k capabilities I liked the price range and the package of accessories and stabilization. It is a rig that I fully intend to upgrade with a Zenmuse x5 as right now this camera acts as an action camera more than anything. It is great for corporate freelance as the resolution is TV ready and the wide angle shows off building, structures, and motion very well. It is also great for any type of sport or physical video. I would never use this as my primary camera, though I think with an upgrade to the adapter and an x5 the Osmo can make a great addition to a cinema kit for those tough to get shots. Not many 4k camera systems can maneuver like the Osmo can through such tight spaces.
    Thank you for your video review.

    It's be interesting to hear your thoughts on the osmo with X5 camera attached. For me the ease of use overcomes any excessive compression issues, and I'm far more likely to use it on a wedding shoot where I don't have the luxury of spending 15 min balancing a separate camera.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад +1

      +Lucas Saunal That's why I originally loved the Osmo. The Ronin M with a camera was a bit tough for me to integrate into a wedding without a dedicated gimbal operator so it required a wedding with a pretty big budget. The Osmo is simple, doesn't require balancing, and is very portable (though a 1/4" tripod socket on the bottom would have helped because I could either quick mount it to a tripod when not using it or wear it with a camera strap without adding bulk). The X5 camera is fairly expensive though for what it is and I'm not sure how it works with different lenses that now may need balancing since it offers interchangeable lenses. I do know that the battery life will be reduced as well (which was already too low) though you do get aperture control and focus control from what I have read which are sorely missing. I do prefer that the X5 default lens is 30mm (35mm equivalent) which is a more usable focal length than the super wide 20mm on the X3. It's definitely a setup I would not mind trying though.

    I would like to see a new version of it. I have the Pocket, its good, really good for what it is, but I crave better. In a run and gun scenario, I will have a bag and don't need something as small as pocket sized. m43 mount would be ideal so I can change lens.

    In other reviews where they include sound recorded while the OSMO is active -but not even recorded on the OSMO - you can hearthe OSMO fans whirring. There is a PLUS model and the specs say "Silent Shooting" - does that mean what it says? ie. they have fixed the motor whirring in the + model?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      Typically the silent shooting mode on gimbals makes them less powerful and slower to respond to movement but does make them near silent. It just tunes down the motor performance to where you don't hear them. How much that will affect performance is yet to be seen. The DJI Ronin M had a silent mode as well and that is what it did.

    Dude, or you record in 4K, knowing that you're only gonna export in 1080p, you can zoom in to 400% The only difference then would be the depth of field the Osmo could capture. But if you're just worried about framing shoot in 4K and zoom in...

    would you recommend this for a non techy total newbie who wants to make simple videos with good audio quality, selfie and close up, over the shoulder, look at what I'm doing modes, with smooth zoom in and out??

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      Kind of. My only issue is that you can't really use it for a selfie unless you have a longer stick because the minimum focus distance is over 1 meter. There is no zoom on this model either so you are stuck with a very wide lens. They have a new version though called the Osmo Plus coming out with a zoom and a slightly closer minimum focus distance.

    Great review! I do agree the footage is muddy, and almost everything else you said too.. but still love my OSMO! Accessories definitely bring it up to speed.

    Very good honest review of the osmo. Thank you for making this video. I like the idea of selfie mode for vlogging. I use an 3 axis stabiliser with go pro to vlog and I have no way of seeing what I am recording in selfie mode. With the osmo you can though.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks man. The Osmo is great for Vlogging...you just need to get the extension rod because the camera doesn't focus on anything less than 3ft away and my arm isn't quite that long. But thankfully DJI has a ton of accessories for the Osmo

      +Dan Watson Another good tip. Thank you in advance Dan. I would not of realised otherwise. Looks like I will be investing in one. The selfie mode feature for vlogging sells this setup for me and somewhere to attach an external mic. Thank you again stewart

    I agree with your review and would just save up for a dedicated 4k video recorder. The other thing to consider is low light performance.....

    When panning left and right, it seemed a bit jumpy/low framerate. Is that something because of youtube or were the original videos not that smooth either?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      +Danny Katz It's a couple of things. I was shooting 24p, there is a bit of jumpiness from rolling shutter when panning since the sensor is not scanned all at once, and a little extra from youtube. At 24p, you have to be very careful with pans

    • @dannykatz7
      @dannykatz7 9 лет назад

      +Dan Watson thanks for letting me know! is there any advantage to shooting at 24p vs 30?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      +Danny Katz It's what movies are shot at...might look more cinematic. Most of my video reviews are shot at 24p so I try to match that with the videos I shoot.

    I am planning on recording some video (mainly, but no only in selfie mode). So I was wondering which is better: do I invest on an Osmo or get a Canon Camera like the rebel T5. What do you advise?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      +Arturo Cuevas-Bautista The osmo really does not work well in selfie mode since the minimum focusing distance is 3ft. You would need a selfie stick or something to pull that off. Something like the T5 would work or look at the Panasonic G7 which offers much better quality video: bhpho.to/1Xjo3pE

    Did you use any stabilization effect when you edited? I seen other videos of the osmo & the footage seems a lot more bouncy. Yours was solid

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад

      +BKelly Nope, just hand holding the unit with no added effects. I tried adding some stabilization in post and it didn't look much better so I took it out. You just have to watch your step and try to keep it at the same height as you walk.

    • @BKellysMusic
      @BKellysMusic 9 лет назад

      +Dan Watson Well I finally bought one!! I just uploaded a music video with it if you wanna check it out. Works awesome when stabilizing, the quality wasent the best though.. but i did shoot in 1080 with out even messing with the lighting settings or anything, I was just was soo excited to put it to use! .Next time ill be going 4k...plus I figured out all the settings now...anyways, I dont know if you like hiphop but if you get a chance, you should give it a watch

    would love to see a review of the black magic micro(raw version). and compare the dynamic range to sony a7s, a7ii & even a7rii. i'm guessing the stabilization & low-light are an issue, but looks like an amazing, super small camera that shoots raw video.

    i was a little unclear..
    did you say 4k at 120fps? or did you mean 4k at 30fps and 1080 at 120fps?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  9 лет назад +1

      +Photographic Elements Yeah, it's only 4k (or UHD actually) at 30fps max and then 1080p goes to 120fps but even that is amazing for a low cost camera.

  • @kaneaties

    How about the internal audio quality recorded?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  8 лет назад

      I didn't test it. I just couldn't really see a good way of getting this to work well with an external mic. I guess if you were recording a selfie type thing and wearing a lapel but honestly since the minimum focusing distance is 1 meter, it didn't really work well for that.
