Idolatry is a mortal sin, the Catholic Church knows it very well and that is why the worship of the Mary most Holy is a sin condemned millennia ago by the church.
In the *4th century* (there were still 1,200 years left for the Protestant heretics to set foot on the earth) a group appeared known as the *Coliridians* , who offered a cult of worship to the Blessed Virgin.
They were a Gnostic sect made up mostly of women who mixed the figure of Mary with pagan deities.
When *Saint Epiphanius,* Bishop of Salamis, *learned of this heresy, he did not hesitate to denounce and condemn it on behalf of the entire Catholic Church.*
He said: *"May Mary be venerated.* *May Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be worshiped, but let no one worship Mary."*
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CIC) teaches that the Virgin Mary is honored in a special way, but does not have the cult of worship that is only rendered to God (CIC 971).
