  • I am always blown away at how homeless people respond when I give them new socks.
    It goes without saying that homelessness is exceptionally challenging. That means people are not always in the best of moods. However, when presented with fresh new socks, more often than not recipients give me an enthusiastic smile. One homeless youth even yelled out "White Gold" when I handed him two pairs of Hanes socks.
    When I first noticed Richard, he was helping two women who looked like tourists with directions in downtown Dallas, Texas. It was kind of neat to see because you could tell Richard was going out of his way to be helpful.
    When I handed him new socks, I was not prepared for his emotional reaction. His feet were hurting from not wearing socks and having new socks almost brought him to tears. Me too!
    Richard is an Army veteran. He became homeless after Katrina. He and his wife lived in FEMA camps before moving to Dallas.
    Richard panhandles to get into a shelter at night. Shelters in Dallas charge between $7.50 and $10 a night. He is in a work therapy program at the VA that pays him $1 an hour for the 24 hours he works every week!
    Even though he is on the streets, homeless, Richard chooses to stay happy. His smile glows. I believe part of that is his helpful spirit trying to give back to others whatever he can. It makes me happy that I brightened his day by giving him a simple pair of socks.

    About Invisible People:
    Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
    Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
    Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

      A FUCKING MEN!!!! No vet should be homeless. Tiny homes are not that expensive. Our government could easily do that for vets especially and other homeless too. @jasongates- 6 лет назад +20

      Albertus Jansen, you're right. I once saw on TV that the Salvation Army charges the homeless 17 dollars per month to stay in their facility. Now, if the homeless had 17 dollars per month to fork over, they would not be homeless. Nothing is free, but still. So, how are the homeless supposed to get shelter? Go to another shelter? Well, I also saw that some shelters require an ID to stay in their facility. Well, the homeless aren't going to have ID. You have to have an address to put onto the ID, and you also have to have money to get the ID. Homeless don't have ID, and whatever ID they once had is now long expired. So, you're right. It's a shame. People become homeless for whatever the reason: The person got hurt at work and could no longer work; rent cost more than the person made each month; the person lost his job due to the company downsizing; the person's house caught on fire; whatever the reason ........ only for the homeless shelters to shut out the homeless person even more so. The very people who exist just to help the homeless, themselves send the homeless away. It's a shame.

Then you should start saving 3-6 months of your gross pay (preferably 6 months). You should also make sure you continue to start those CDs over again once they mature. Never ever touch the money. Just save and add to it or start a new one every time you get enough money to start one.

    I'm a veteran and was homeless as well. 3 years ago in fact. The homeless program helped me get an appt. Now I work at the VA and I'm going to school in sept to be a counselor for veterans with substance abuse. Some of these states are horrible. CWT, the program he was in should pay minimum wage at least. Until Valhalla brother.

    • @Duval2k7
      @Duval2k7 6 лет назад +16

      Jeff Woolf Actually you can get a disability pension. I'm in the appeals process now. The VA try to find any excuse not to pay even when you have service connected issues documented in your medical records. Just sad.

    • @arleneaugustahair8393
      @arleneaugustahair8393 5 лет назад +7

      Master Waff even the pension isn’t enough. It’s only about 65% of your base pay when you retire. I tried to tell my husband before he retired that he needed to save money because a retirement check isn’t what people think it is. He didn’t listen to me. What saved him was the disability check! Now he’s in school so the GI Bill also helps.
      I’m also a Disabled Veteran and I work, plus I save money like crazy. People just never ever save for retirement or emergencies.
      I’m teaching young people in the military to save for retirement and not depend on the government, especially not social security. That’s a whole other joke that people think about.

    • @1upthegreat
      @1upthegreat 4 года назад

      @@arleneaugustahair8393 yeah but its income that you can stack with another job without penalty. Opportunities await, dont smoke crack and beat your wife then expect the government to take care of you for life because you served 3 years in the military....you enlist, you are compensated, what you do with your money and family and life afterwards is all up to you.
