I've had jobs like this. Very hard to price, I still get them wrong after 20 years in the business. If the customer is happy ,and you are happy, that's all that matters. Fair play to ya matey.

im in bedfordshire and had a similar job i charged 300 im lucky with my waste as a local farmer allows me too tip up on his muck heap he uses his teleloader too heap it up and turn it over he then sells it too allotment holders at 40 a load as it gets mixed with horse manure from the livery yard he runs

400 that's the kinda money that's needed - now and then. Made a difference. Didn't work excessive hours. Still have the dump to do. Usually more customer satisfaction when having got this type of job done. Well done!
Great job there and great price…glad you have learnt to charge your worth…people do t pay for your time, they pay you to do the job and take the waste, the fact you do it quickly means you are efficient and have the right tools…keep up the good work.
At first I'd say £400 was a little high, but then after seeing the before and after pictures I think it's a fair price...
I had a job similar to this last year but more of a jungle, another gardener quoted £350 but I quoted £600 as I knew it was going to be a pain and no idea what I was going to fins underneath it... I got the job. I think as long as you can show value to the customer, the price is a second thought.
Keep these videos coming mate really helping with people like myself. Got my first regular job booked in for grass cutting later in March and just finalising insurance and odd last minute bits of kit. Starting out with a 6x4 trailer until I can get a nice van and sell the car. Good to see your journey.
I was pleasantly surprised with the 400.. I mean, in that you're charging what you're now, good lad. I might've suggested 2-300 max for that.. and I'm in London! But fair play to you, I like it.
Dont need bull handle strimmer, I think loop handle is more comfortable and easier to use even for these bigger cleanup jobs. I do reccomend a backpack blower though, the Stihl BR800 CE is a beast. That looks a pretty easy job so 400 GBP is a good price. I'd probably have that knocked over in 2 hours and would use mower rather than strimmer on those grass patches.

Think I would have edged the paths too, using the strimmer. I like a clean line 😊
I usually do to be fair but if I remember rightly, the quality of the lawn (mainly ivy and weeds) it wouldn't have really shown up but yes definitely, nice cleans lines make a lawn stand out

love the videos this one was so much like jobs i have been doing lately and I felt like I was over charging at around £120/£150 in Newcastle . difference being i don't take any waste away at the minute due to the cost of waste licence's and cost to dispose of it . but hopefully next year i can get those sorted out great work mate and a new sub to your channel

If you are mates with another gardener then suggest splitting the cost of a bigger strimmer with them perhaps? Helps keep the cost down as it’s not generally something you need every day, only a few jobs each a year.

I believe £400 is a fair price. Waste charges don't come cheap and with these sort of jobs, you never know what would happen / going to find. I'm in Essex

I started my garden maintenance business last year part time, and going full time this year, your videos are helping a lot so thank you, Only thing I’m struggling with is what to do with the waste from bigger jobs. No council tips take commercial waste near me, any ideas of what I can do?
There should be places nearby that are licenced to take commercial waste. Councils usually have a site too but mine is an hour away. You'll just have to Google it or maybe ring the council?
Excellent video. I’ve just been to view a potential job today. A very neglected garden front and back requiring a one off tidy before a fortnightly maintenance slot can begin. So this has been very helpful with making my quote, cheers 👍
£400.00 . Well done , a good pay day ! If the customer is happy and you worked within your quoted time then that's good . Makes up for the under quoted jobs. 👍

Cheers. It's also the fact I had to go back a few days later with an empty van so it was a seperate visit plus tip etc. A lot of glass was found during the quote so I priced a bit higher in the event of any nasty surprises too. All the best

Great video mate. Brilliant how you tell us the price. Helps me out a lot. Going into third year and I keep undercharging customers. I'm going to start trying my luck a bit I think because there's loads of work out there.
It's a big guessing game really, you get some right and some wrong. Usually I'm wrong more often than not though 🤣

Not overcharging at all mate, if you are getting 90-100% of quotes then you are severely undercharging.

your price is what you want, people don't know what goes on in the background, I believe I may have under priced it, at about £200+ waste, It's easy to give a price once the job is done, especially by someone else, believe me (I'll get flamed for this) seasoned gardeners get it drastically wrong too, its a guessing game.

Good days work there Adam. Been watching your channel for a while now and your videos made me take the plunge and start up with gardening too. Thanks for being so honest and including the prices that you charge. It really gives others confidence to charge a fair rate for both parties. People should expect to pay properly for this type of work as it is very labour intensive. As you say, there's the waste fees and traveling to the tip to consider after the work on site. It is a business at the end of the day and you shouldn't be expected to absorb those costs.

@@TheGreyGardener1990 if the customer is happy to pay for your work and get you back again then that's what matters. Maybe you did overcharge this time but certainly under charged plenty of times too. Presumably it'll be a standard maintenance fee now so a larger one off cost to get it into a manageable condition was maybe worth paying for.

That path looks like I laid it🤣 my eyebrows raised a bit at £400 but unless you're there it's difficult to see the work on these jobs and it's up an down with prices, sometimes your ahead and other times behind. They even themselves out eventually 👍 nice one
Definitely mate. I've probably lost out more than I've gained 🤣 it was the glass and stuff I'd found under the grass on the quote that was a concern so I went a bit higher

Good work! I know it's a clearance job (& you said you had the front to do), but that seems a little bit high perhaps. (I live near Lancaster). I don't know, but if it's just an occasional clearance job & your customers were happy, then fair enough. That's what matters.
I'd have used my big (battered old) mower to take the thick of it off & then that waste is straight out of the grass collector onto a tarp. Then finish off with the strimmer / brushcutter / blower. Another top tip! : get yourself a nice old-school wooden hay rake & maybe also a lightweight compost fork. It'll save you loads of time & effort collecting the waste up. Try your local farmer's supplies. I think the rakes are still handmade in Dufton by Rudd's and not that expensive. C.T. Hayton's at Kendal sell them. A wide, flat plastic snow shovel like they sell at Homebase is a great cheap trick too!

Thanks Jack. I've certainly messed up on a few as well and done things for peanuts. This one was a winner. Also glass and stuff under the grass so it allowed for things like that too
I don't do this sort of work currently, however I have done plenty like this in the past for landlords end of tenancy etc.
For me I would flail mow it, strim off the weeds in the patio and blow the paths off, the flail pulverises everything so no waste away, the flail cutting time would be less than 40 mins.
The job would take me about 2 hours max plus travel time and quote time. I would be looking for around £200.
Thanks for the tips Paul. Flait mowing, is that like an attachment you buy rather than a mower? I'm imagine like a farmer cutting down crops kind of thing. Different to mulching right?

I have a goldoni twist 9ds with a berta flail mower. If you Google this, you will get an idea of it.
Tracmaster (bcs do similar machines) The flail mower is an attachment you can run off the tractor unit. You can also put a cultivator head on for preparing ground for seeding or turf.
I used to and still do lots of turfing and seeding work and used to do plenty of land lord clearances, and the machine, cultivator, and flail heads paid for itself very quickly.
You can also flail up hedge cuttings and prunings to avoid waste away, usefull on the right sort of jobs.
These machines, although expensive, really are bomb proof, I've hit plenty of breeze blocks, bits of metal, etc, and being flails, they just bounce off rather than breaking like a blade.
The other real plus point is that your debris are held under the machine, so you don't have a drama if there is cat shit in the long grass!

Have looked at a one similar to urs ... for a customer i work for every wk...on the hr rate . ... if i went in with their son I'd be on 180.00 for the day . Arse!!
Great video, mate. For the lawn area, the oregon mulching blade for around £10 would be ideal. Will save you a new strimmer. It would have mulched the leaves up at the same time. Half a days work in my personal opinion with the best tools . Cheers
Thanks for tips mate. There were half buried rocks and some tiny stumps dotted around which I couldnt see so I had to strim to see where everything was. More of a pain in the arse than I think came accross in the video this one 🤣
I see alot more younger guys going in with the strimmer.. I'm nearly 41.. and gardening for more than twenty years.. for that job I'd have used a four wheel mower 😂 And gradually lower the height.. I'm too old to strim like that! Rear roller mower no good for that but a mower with four wheels, Stihl do a good one, for me would be better, less backache.. pick a dry day.. I use strimmer for details mostly.. or a patch of nettles works well. I'm a bit spooked by strimmers too with regards windows and stones..
Only reason I strimmed was because there was hidden small strumps and a couple of rocks that had been partially buried but I didn't know where
@@TheGreyGardener1990 Makes sense.. as Nathan (Lewis) rightly said you can't perfectly gauge from a video or a photo.. I mean a video is great but being there in person is another thing altogether. It's those details like rocks and stumps plus rubbish and stuff which slow the job down.
Exactly yeah. Its hard as well whilst filming to pick up on things that become important in the comments as well and make things clearer for the viewer.

What I mean is, you did all that one person on your own, that is a task to do that. So you charged accordingly which is right. I do the same if I feel I've done the work of two people. I charge what I feel the job is worth.

£50 for someone to take it away and I can go onto the next job.

See down in Cornwall on way anyone here would pay 400 for that job I wish they would but 180 for a day is a struggle to get people to pay.

Your price is fair in my opinion considering waste. I rarely haul waste as it adds $100 to the cost of service per load. I only schedule 4 hour blocks of time max and aim for $200. A bit less for my retired clients.
That's a good start to a tidy garden. Good job! Have you tried adjusting your handle on the strimmer into a more comfortable position? Or contemplated an aftermarket handle like the Darwins Grip? I can't for the life of remember the name of the similar product available in the UK.

They were local to me. Just a guy on his own I think. Loads of companies out there though. Best thing is to get a bulk deal where you get the shirts, fleeces/hoodie and a hat or something

You need a brush cutter. You will be using way too much time and coil. I have a Sthil fs460, picked it for £250 and it’s 7 years service with out missing a beat.

I've got a brush cutting attachment. Reason I didn't use here were because there was tree stumps and rock kind of buried here and there which I don't think I showed in the video but yes, definitely a useful piece of kit

Great video as always. I'm going to be starting up this year, after taking redundancy from my last job. After watching your videos I'm definitely doing the pricing for each job as opposed to giving an hourly rate. There are some instances of pricing a day rate though...in that case what hours do you then work? Is it 8-4pm...or do you just work till the job is done?
Depends on the size of job obviously but generally a full day would be around 9.30-3.30. You know, there's always going to be exeptions. Summer months I've worked quite late at times if i couldn't afford the time to go back the next day etc and it needed finishing.

@@andrewsflicks7920 Best of luck. Stick to your comfort zone in terms of jobs, and learn to do the basics well. Get used to the day to day hassle, slog and fun of running a business. Then you can branch out into jobs that you may not be too comfortable doing but you're pretty certain you'll do a good job and keep growing from there.
3 of those a week would be nice eh? I think me and my wife would have charged £250 for that, but no waste away, all mulched up to nothing on site.

I've currently gained 15 customers in my first month of going out on my own, again pricing is always difficult finding myself underestimating jobs. I am in Surrey and I couldn't get away with that for a days work.
I would have charged around £200 - £250 but then I always seem to do myself out of a profit lol.

The videos are a pain to film to be honest yeah. I priced high initially as it was long grass so that allowed for any nasty surprises. Found a shoe and few glass bottles lol

I have tried to start charging for the job this year but all the customers around me seem to insist on a hourly rate still.
I will do hourly rate for the basics but iff it's hedges or trees then it's an agreed amount first.
The problem with Surrey is the richer they are the tighter they are.
I have had poeple in £6 million houses moan at £20 an hour and insist on £15 an hour.
You can imagine what my answer was lol

Pricing is hard in our game but never go to cheap especially down here in our area cost of living is going up and so are our running costs

Pricing is such a difficult learning curve in gardening. I definitely know I've done myself out of a few quid now with the numbers running around here. I will take heed. Thanks for the open debate.
9/10 people wouldn’t pay £400 for this job IMO so I don’t think this is a particularly good pricing example.

I haven't given him a price yet. I said I'd see how fast it grows and what's needed and let him know. Not sure if it's going to be fortnightly or even monthly yet
400 good lad, I used to strim stuff down but its hard work I would of gone straight in with my mower and mowed everything then strimmed blown then mowed again,you woukd of shaved a few hour of that job doing that to..400 was a good price if it had hidden shit in thd grass that could damage you or your equipment. Please get yourself some long armed leaf grabbers before next autumn 🍂

Not sure yet. We were going to see how quick everything grew as it was a mix of grass, ivy, and whatever else so I suspect growth may be a bit slower. Checked yesterday and only a few snowdrops were coming through

I compost my waste at my allotment, I'd have been at £200 and I'd have trimmed the ivy on the side wall/fence.
But as I chip/shred my waste and compost it I don't have waste fees (but I obviously charge to remove the waste) otherwise I'd have been around £250/275 if I had to pay to dispose of waste

I priced a bit higher as I found glass during the quote so it was to cover me, plus having to go back on a seperate day to collect waste as it couldn't fit in van with my gear. So it's all time and hassle. The comments have been fairly mixed, some agree, some think it's a tad high. I've undercharged a lot more though 🤦♂️
I would never get away with charging 400 quid a day rate here in belfast ..id get no work..fair play if u can get away with it ..be lucky getting half that

I have a video out tonight explaining it a bit more as I've taken a bit of stick from some on this one. It wasn't as clear cut as maybe the video made out. I found a lot of glass during the quote plus a few other bits.

Hi Patrick, I'm only just starting my 3rd year and I'm sure you know, pricing is tricky. Obviously I put myself out there when I post my pricing videos and leave myself open but you'll see that I've done myself out and undercharged quite a lot too. I'm still learning mate. You say we though, would you usually do this kind of job with help?
Tbh one chap with a decent strimmer and a large muching mower would have been in and out of that garden in under half a day.
Granted I don't have a mulching mower but I would have thought a garden like that would have benefited from having the waste removed so it could breath and allow space for grass to grow rather than suppress it with a load of waste? There was also very small tree stumps and partially buried rocks dotted about that wasn't on the video hence the need to be cautious and not just run a mower over it. It's difficult to film everything and get it all in there.
You mentioned wanting a better strimmer than the stihl kombi. I noticed you've previously used a hyundai multi tool, too.
What's your thoughts on the kombi and the hyundai? I've looked at buying both those same ones.
Having used both it's night and day. The hyudai got me through the early days but it was cumbersome and far too heavy. Could get away with it for strimming but for hedge work it was tough. The stihl kombi is brilliant. Loads of attachments to add to add to your collection too. You do get what you pay for but my budget couldn't stretch too far when I first started out

I priced higher as a found a lot of glass under the grass during the quote so it was to cover myself in case. Then the waste removal which I couldnt fit in the van on that day so it was a seperate visit on a different day which involved completely emptying the van and time/travel to the tip etc. I've undercharged a lot more though! Ha 🤦♂️

I've done a follow up video mate as my reasoning for the price wasn't apparent. Hidden rocks and stumps under the grass meant I couldn't just run my mower over it. I found glass etc too and priced as it was a bit of an unknown as i didnt know what was underneath.. Plus other stuff as well. It's difficult to capture a job and give it a fair representation sometimes over a video.
To be honest, pricing is difficult. I've done myself out many a time and shown it on here, but if you feel I've overcharged here, it's not through any kind of wanting to rip someone off. Thanks for watching though mate and all comments welcome 👍
Yes daylight robbery is when you get a quote and agree to pay it ahead of time for a known service 🤦♂️
@@TheGreyGardener1990don’t mind these people mate. If enough people are willing to pay that to keep you busy then why go any lower. No one minds paying a plumber or electrician that much for significantly less work on a day rate.
Are you doing much grass cutting yet? Most of mine are wanting to wait until later in March. Not the end of the world I suppose!
I'm telling everyone I'm starting mid March. Had one ring me earlier as her grass was growing quickly so cut hers but yeah from the 13th I think

£40 waste £360 for you £60 per hour

I've got a video out tonight going over in a bit more detail of some of the things that didn't particularly come accross in the video. There were little stumps and quite a few partially buried rocks so I had to strim first to see what was there
£400? What a rip off!
Glass bottles (and whatever else) was noticed during the quote under the long grass so it was priced higher to allow for nasty surprises which was explained to the client. Plus all the waste, time taken to come back the following day with an empty van, load it all in, plus time taken to drive to and empty at tip etc etc.
I've posted videos where I've messed up on gardens too and massively undercharged. So it's all about my journey, the good bad and the ugly 🙂
Why is that a rip off ? If it has been quoted and the customer is happy, then all good.
Everyone wants to be a critic. Bare in mind current minimum wage is £10.42 at eight hours for example that's a total of £83.36 (let's be serious why are you going to work for minimum wage? Especially if you're good at what you do.) then take into account insurance, running costs, fuel, waste costs etc etc. People want work doing for peanuts and when you start talking prices it's oh that's expensive my neighbour did it me for £20.00..cool go ask your neighbour to do it then? You're running a business at the end of the day to provide a service to clients and also profit from it. Otherwise what's the point? The £400.00 is more than reasonable when you take everything into account. Big mistake all us buisness owners make early on is under quoting and ending up slaving away for peanuts or even worse working at a complete loss almost. Buisness is buisness. Rant over 😂
@____________________________51 by all means please explain how anything said in my comment shows I'm a "rip off merchant" ? If you can afford to live off minimum wage and cover your fuel and oils and wear on tear of your tools not to mention the insurances for your buisness (provided you're legit and have them) then by all means crack on. If you were any good at your trade you would know your worth and charge correctly and accordingly. I'll wait for your reply I'm eager to read it 😂
Just started watching your channel mate fellow IBD sufferer aswell I’m a senior greenkeeper/ self employed gardener on the side looking to snow ball into a solo trader with my grass knowledge not sure about these comments from some your clearly on a learning path and your straight up honest and your still learning ! Some people really gotta chill on your RUclips keep it up man 👍🏼

*Edit: excellent video mate and fantastic job. A few points of note in my humble opinion. There is no price on your health. Spend £1200 on a strong handle bar strimmer and Stihl BR600 backpack blower. Gets your jobs done faster, but more importantly, protects your health. You wouldn't be raking up all that stuff on the grass, as the br600 would blow it all. I started with the same handheld as you, and once you get a backpack, you realise the wee one couldn't blow pubes off a bar of soap.

Thanks for the tips mate. Nice to know someone else would price higher too. Its difficult filming it to show the extent of it. Hidden tree stumps, part buried rocks, glass, bottles. Not as easy as maybe first seen on here

Don't worry I get it, I find it embarrassing if you quote them a high price because I don't want them moaning at me.
If you had a mulch mower, you could of done that in a few hours.
@@JDMM92 they were rocks part buried and tiny stumps though as well so I had to see where everything was first after strimming
@The Grey Gardener That's fair enough, I think I'm going to take your advice and over quote people, I end up coming away half the time thinking I could of charged an extra £20 on alot of jobs.
