Its also important to know that older Foxes use those 'break away' bolts. Not the security torx bolts shown here. A pair of vice grips or pliers will work to turn them and remove them. This ignition if not changed could pose a fire hazard as well. It is a VERY important item to replace ASAP. Thanks for the great how to video LMR!
You guys are awesome! You’ve helped me keep my 88 fox vert on the road, from everything from convertible top repair to window motors to simple switches like this 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I had to replace mine 3 weeks ago in my 89 convertible. My turn signals would stop working intermittently, along with the a/c blower and wipers. A google search pointed me toward the ignition switch. Replacing it was easy enough once you remove the steering column trim.
Damn! I passed up a '86 Convertible for $600. The guy had trouble starting it and it would die on him. He checked the fuel pump, regulator and fuel shut off. I bet THIS was the problem.
Damn my 93 has the same issues. It would just randomly shut off while driving. Fuel pump shut off and then starter wouldn't turn over. I'm thinking this is the issue with mines.
@DessiLu14 My 3 year old and myself were going to move my 89 into the driveway and when I turned the key.... nothing. Seriously thought it was the battery or starter but now I see that this is the issue.
@quarans08 ...I sure did. All the long, the wire was connected by a butt connection that wasn't even connected properly. I reconnected it, crimped, and took a small torch to it and bam...she starts up every time. Now I have an extra ignition switch for future need.
I had to change this not long after I got my car. I ended up getting a new one from the parts store I worked for at the time. A couple zip-ties holding the two parts together (had to go around the column to do that) make for good, cheap insurance.
Dam i tried to repair mine and forgot about battery and something started to burn luckily i just disconnected the switch and went to check and everything seemed good now ill how to buy new part glad its really cheap
Yo this was my problem my mustang acted up after a oil change and it turned out to be this switch, I realized it after every turn I did it wanted to turn off.
okay i think this is whats going bad on my car because my car will stop running when im cruising down the road and kick back on. and sometimes when i start up my car first time in the morning i wont have any accessory power... until i jiggle the key
Sounds like this my be the cause. Easy way to tell is just remove the lower panels to gain access to it and give the plastic part of the switch a "jiggle". If it moves it is bad.Give us a call (1-866-507-8871) or go online to replace it.
I have an 88 Ford Mustang and the turn signals do not light up on the outside or inside but the hazards work fine, I've tried everything. fuses and light bulbs are fine, could the ignition switch cause that? Please help
I bought a new switch from LMR and after a year it failed like the original. It jiggles connecting to the metal housing. I lost turn signals though the hazards worked.
NOPE!!!!!!!!!!! MY 79 HAD the snap off security screws with no head to grip??? was not bad though! i just took my cutoff wheel and cut slots for a flathead screw driver. im think of just rewireing it to a switch panel "drag style"
so i get no power no lights no noise no nothing when i turn the key. People are telling me it might be the starter but i think it might be the ignition switch. Would it cause there to be no reaction from my car at all when i turn the key?
Watch this video: ruclips.net/video/C_I-eeV2uXo/видео.html It explains the process of removing the ignition cylinder whenever the keys are misplaced or the cylinder is damaged. -Landan
my car kept cutting off while driving and then come back on while going down the road, then sometimes it would take a minute to start, well it wouldn't start I replaced the coil and coincidently it started, well now it wont start and my turn signals quit working at the same time, would a bad ignition cause that too ? any help would be greatly appretiated, thanks
A no start condition could be your ignition switch. Check it to see if it shows any signs of damage or overheating. If it feel loose or separates that is your problem.
+Late Model Restoration will a bad ignition switch cause a no spark issue ? I was driving and went over the RR tracks stomped on the gas and everything was fine for a quarter mile then out if no where, my 84 5.0 Mustang GT that's manual trans just shut off and when I checked for spark, none what so ever. When at times, my car wouldn't want to even turn over or it would just click, then I'd slam my door shut, then she would want to turn over. Just wondering if a bad ignition switch would cause a no spark issue. The Mustang has a MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster 2 Coil, MSD 8mm wires and Summit electric fuel pump.
Does this still apply for a 1990 LTD crown victoria? Same steering wheel as the fox body, and my key is stuck in the ignition, it seems the car thinks I've left it in gear regardless of where the shifter is. My problem is the opposite of this though, my car runs just fine, so now if anyone breaks in it they can just drive right off in it!
I'll be totally honest with you, I don't know. There were several "similar" things across Fox chassis cars, but some seem to have their differences. You may search around on some old forums to see if someone else has had a similar issue. -Landan
@@latemodelrestoration I figured out what it was; one of the shifter bushings had worked its way out of position, sliding down and getting in the way of the mechanism that allows you to remove the key when the shifter's in "park".
Could a bad ignition switch cause my fuel pump to run until it dies? 3 pumps dead now. The battery is also getting drained. I don't actually hear it running, but maybe it's running at a lower voltage that's bleeding over? BTW, the tank is brand new and has clean fuel.
Yes, some of these issues could be caused by the switch being bad. Check the switch, and see if the halves are coming apart, this is a sign you need to replace it.
Hey man I don’t know if you’ll read this but I was changing my ignition switch out and had it finished and when I turned the key to accessory mode the fans and fuel pump started but then all of a sudden stopped and now it’s not wanting to start at all. Could this be the wiring harness for the switch? The wires are reall loose in the connectors so maybe we just pulled em out by accident and they won’t go in because it’s old. Idk that’s why I’m thinking I bout another harness for it so I’ll let you know if it fixes it but if you have any suggestions I am all ears

On my '92 Coupe, after it didn't start one day, I zip tied the switch together. I definably need to replace it ..lol
Thanks, great vid, I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how the metal spring re-attaches, looks like its not used!

It causes havoc on the electrical system. It could be causing something to stay on. Have you installed anything like a new radio lately??
Mine doesn't have any way of removing the screws. Its not the bit that you guys used they are round.... its a 1979. If you could gelp id love it

I have a 87 2.3 if the ignition switch was bad would it crank and not turn on ? The housing on the key cylinder switch is broken could it be that ?

I replace mine and it made it worst🤔 if i just touch my key car would shut off. So i just put my old one back in
G n' F N Roses hey did u solve the problem i have the same issue but now i start the key ang it wont stay on u think its the ignition key cylinder
My switch is locked up. wont turn at all.
Will the car crank with a bad ignition switch?
Mark Yajcaji yes it might even stay stuck cranking but it probably won’t stay running for very long
would this prevent from not turning off the engine?
Apache 59 yes my original tone came apart and my car would stay stuck cranking until I had to disconnect the battery to make it stop
