My wife died in March 2020 of cancer. I providentially came upon this chorale piece. Its has soothed my heart each time that I listen to it. Thank you.
Hi mr David,
my belated condolences to you. I hope that your sorrow has lessened a bit with time. I know how soothing music can be. I listened to quiet music a lot when my parents died, my mom in late 2019 and my dad in January 2020. Two pieces that helped me at the time were Albinoni's concerto for oboe in D minor - Adagio and Vivaldi's winter, second movement. i thought I'd share them with you.

God be with you always
May God rest her soul and let perpetual light shine upon her
I haven't sung this yet--though there are rumours it's on the cards this Christmas! When you sing beautiful choral pieces like this, and get the tone and dynamic right (as this gifted choir have), it feels like you have released the best of the bit of love you possess to the congregation/audience. Your little blessing. It is glorious and takes on its own life for a few minutes. I hope you will always have solace and consolation from music and people for your loss.
God bless you at Christmas, friend. May she rest in peace.
Thankful to God in my life 😊 peace to all
I don't know how no one cried while performing this. It's so, so beautiful.
I cry every time I hear this . And I’m a Marine
I have cried while performing this.
When Lauridsen describes the process of composing this ( on RUclips), it’s even more moving. The breadcrumbs of beauty and mystery and grace, to this final piece. Just amazing.
Takes 30 rehearsals. And even then
You lose yourself in it, that's how. I don't remember that I possess tear ducts, or a body in general, until the conductor's hands disengage.
The hand of God reaches down from heaven's beatific vision, touches the hand of Morten Lauridsen as he composes this magnificent piece of music. Flawless performance by a troupe of chorale performers vocalizing as angels from the heavenly realm in perfect harmony. Tears of Joy listening to God's perfection embodied in music. Bravo!
Masterpieces don't need to be monstrous orchestral works (though they certainly can be). Mr. Lauridsen has created one of the greatest pieces of choral music ever written.
I am crying my eyes out right now... In the middle of the night ... With walls so thin I'm trying not to be heard. I feel as though I've been visited by an angel. And all my worries, the worries I've carried all my life have been temporarily lifted.
Me too, I’m all alone and I cry too. Such unspeakable beauty resonates with the unspeakable pain I’ve been running away with all my life. Like a dogs tail runs from the chasing head. There are probably multitudes of us...all over the world. N I think it’s the makings of something new. The dawn after the night.
Bless you both and may God through Christ lead you to all truth that sets you free and when He does that ( with your consent) you will be truly free indeed!! ❤
By far my favorite choral piece. It had been on a choral playlist that was mistakenly deleted some time ago.
I didn't think i'd have the pleasure of hearing it again until I recalled that i once watched it on youtube!! After a significant amount of time spent trawling through my youtube history this evening.... i found it😂
Of all of the versions on RUclips, this one has the best pacing. Excellent legato! Others are too fast and don't savor all of the consonants and vowels. It's a very moving piece. A great performance by the singers and director!
Wonderful comment, thanks a lot from the choir!
Agree. This version has the best mixing of the different voices, immaculate intonation and phrasing. Well done!
Totally agree!!
True
It really sounds like they are playing with the natural ambient echo decay of the room. Very cool. They move right when it dies.
The most beautiful instrument ever, the human voice.
This is gorgeous. Superb choral tone, wonderful phrasing, and masterful use of dynamics. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and a tear to my eye. Bravo.
I'm in heaven when I hear this rendition of Lauridsen's 'O Magnum Mysterium' by St Jacobs Ungdomskor. God Bless.
Wow thanks a lot :) God bless!
A resounding blest celestial Amen, an all encompassing beautiful Shalom.
Thanks a lot! Your comments really make us happy and want to post more!
Yes an excellent version!
Snälla gör så!
Iam not a Christian but it doesn't matter we all have the right to celebrate the tranquility of piece great performance
Love your choir
Beautiful
I'm so bad at controlling my breath it physically hurts singing this song, all the more props to them for singing so beautifully
Excellent recording! This is music from heaven. I am so glad that I was able to hear "O Magnum Mysterium" live at a concert a few years ago. It totally fascinated me.
This piece has always brought me into the presence of God, but your choir is perhaps the best version I’ve heard. You truly sing as one unit, and it’s flawless. Thank you for sharing this.
Very agreeable and soothing to the SOUL and HOLISTIC.
An out of world experience, will turn anyone's day around. Excellent!
So beautiful, it brings tears to my eyes.
Brilliant music and very inspiring. I am a "lapsed Christian" but when I listen to this, I believe again. Beautifully sung by this talented young Swedish choir.
Absolutely stunning performance! I'm certain Morten Lauridsen is quite proud of this one! Bravo!
Lord pls heal all those sick in Covid... Please end this pandemic Lord Jesus
Lovely performance, and bravo to your recording engineer!
Lauridsen's music -- and this rendering of it in particular, which is one of the best I've heard! -- captures something of the great and glorious mystery of the incarnation of the eternal Son of God, Whose coming in the flesh was the most glorious miracle in the history of the cosmos, especially in view of *why* He came -- to save us rebels from our insurrection against His own rightful and benificent Lordship over our lives. Lauridsen's late 20th-century harmonies fittingly embody the eternal splendor of the subject matter expounded by the ancient responsory text of the matins of Christmas. Soli Deo gloria!
This is one of those songs that can turn my day around.
Thanks a lot!
There is a timeless quality to the piece that can put the inflated humdrum of our days in perspective.
It's a piece not a song
@@scharnhorstkaisarbeethoven it's a song, because it's sung and was made to be sung
Hands down the most beautiful rendition of this particular piece, bravo!!
Cool. Glad I found this. Sending it around to several whom I know will appreciate it as well.
I have no words. Only goosebumps, emotions, and hope. Thank you so much. soli deo gloria
I can play this over and over and it does not get old. How can such a short song draw out such emotion, love and awe for God? A great composer and this is a great rendition. Carefully selected notes and beautiful harmonies. The low baritone voices are so beautiful. Love this song.
Thanks, it means a lot to us that the performance connects with people who can appreciate the magic and beauty of the music.
@@StJacobsVokalensemble Does your ensemble travel to the states ever?
I've been really wanting to experience hearing this piece live.
I'm from nyc
@@anthonymarchan2974 thanks for your support! We've been looking forward to traveling more after the pandemic has settled down. Our last trip was three years ago and the United States is high on our list. We would have to find a suitable organisation to partner with.
Its the best performance of nay I've heard.
This song was so beautifully executed. The harmonies were perfect, the crescendos and decrescendos were perfectly timed. This brought tears to my eyes, it makes me miss being in choir. This song always reminds me of the beauty of voice. Wonderful job.
A stunning performance; one I can listen to again and again
I savor this and share it every year. It’s like being wrapped up in God’s love in Christ!
"celestial" is the word that comes to me immediately, God.....goosebumps, what a gorgeous vocal sound
Thank you so much!
I must be (getting) old, because it moves me to tears to hear beautiful young people sing this heavenly:-)! Keep up the good work and post it regularly. Kind regards, Peter
I cried every time
Thank you for the beautiful music, one of my favourite choral pieces and really nicely sung
Fucking couch in the end! Such beautiful performance!
Yeah, it's not what you wish for...
Beautiful. Excellent conductor, as well.
Every night, there are multitudes of us, I imagine...who weep upon hearing sounds like this. We weep because ...
Our High School Choir sung this for our wedding. Well done yall.
Please sing One More Light by Linkin Park (arr. for choir by Joe Eckman) ruclips.net/video/-qNn0xTo5Ks/видео.html
I agree. I this is the version that moved me most.
Thank you!
Amazing sound with amazing choral conductor.. God Bless this choir
Thank you so much!
Well done! This is one of the best recordings of this beautiful composition by Laurie's en, I ever heard! Bravo to The coir and it's conductor.
So well sung .. reminds me on my times in youth choirs ...what a blessing to experience performing music on this level.
Timeless piece of music sung by a most wonderful choir .I can hear the hum of the universe in the beautiful singing and harmonies. Morgen Lauridsen is truly a great and inspired artist.
Incredible performance of this beautiful work! Bravi tutti. And thank you for this gift.
Bellissimo. Complimenti vivissimi.
I love this piece and you sing it so beautifully!! You captured the sweetness of the harmony so perfectly with the colors of the voices :)). Perfect pitch, too. Bravo!
This is a hymn to the universe- the great mystery of the universe. Whether a believer or not this captures the great open cosmos . The choir and conductor are superb- Loridsen is a genius.
This is a hymn to the "great mystery" of the Holy Eucharist, where Our Lord Jesus Christ give Himself to us in His blood, body, soul and divinity, "for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" (Jn 3:16).
Incorrect.
"O great mystery,
and wonderful sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord,
lying in a manger!
Blessed is the virgin whose womb
was worthy to bear
the Lord, Jesus Christ.
Alleluia!"
Watch an interview with the composer, Lauridsen. He says he was inspired by a painting that symbolized the Virgin Mary and wanted to compose a song that did the same.
My favorite piece of choral music. If you haven't heard the choir of kings college perform it, it's equally magnificent.
Stunningly beautiful :) peaceful and awe inspiring :)
Just found this now after listening to an mp3 recording on my earbuds.
Would that I could have been in the audience for such a performance when I happened to be in Stockholm for a few months twenty years ago. A marvellous performance that truly conveys the possibilities of voices singing together. Tak.
This is perfect music, this is music that comes to God, this is the music that moves me. Your choir is also superb!
Thank you.
I don't trust that critter as far as I can throw a dog hunk of fecal matter. Even my minister things this is a trap for Jesus fans.Almost like a vampire in sucking the attention from one. Or finding brown logs in my steak sauce.
Our schola perfomed last night at Midnight Mass. Transcendent, beyond words.
Beautiful
Such as angels sing ,do these fine young people. Truly magnificent.
Watch video where Lauridsen explains how he idealized and composed this masterpiece. He highlights the dissonant tone in Beata Virgo, which is the climax of the piece, to signify the pain she felt when giving birth to divinity.
I'm not sure what video you saw. But I just watched a video of Lauridsen explaining it as the immense pain she felt when she watched her son being murdered.
This rendition is sublime !!!!!!
Great execution! Very moving! Thank you for sharing this beautiful peice of Liturgical Music!
Thanks a lot for the kind words!
Absolute beautiful piece. So quiet at the very end, you can hear the tuberculosis clinic next door
Now that I have listened to so, so many interpretations of this piece of music on RUclips, I can definitely say that this recording surpasses all. To me the forte-part (around 4:08) feels and sounds like a shift, like an intensification, like a different, a new level that this work is taking at this point. And it feels like Lauridsen must have wanted it exactly that way. I have never heard this part sung with - I can almost say - such passion. I'm surprised that no other choir/conducter seems to see this... ;-)
Absolutely Stunning! Some of the most beautiful Choral Music every Recorded! Many Thanx and Blessings to All! ML
Beautiful!! Excellent!! Parabéns, from Brazil!!
This purity of this version gives me great peace as I head down the one way road to dementia. I have sung it many times, but never with such clarity. That low D in the basses at the end is gorgeous.
I have sung this and truly felt blessed to be allowed to sing it. And I have heard many choirs around the world perform this. But this is undoubtedly the best live performance I have ever witnessed of this wonderful music. You are absolutely impeccable. What a delight to watch. Thumbs up, 12 out of 10. Heavenly. Thank you so much!
What a perfect performance for this amazing piece!
Fantastic! I feel His words you spoke via this song. GOD BLESS
Wonderful!!!!!!
just gorgeous
God bless you all!
This is wonderful performance !!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks a lot!
I love the P A C E of this piece. You have captured the meaning of the music and the text perfectly and have given me/us time to absorb them both. Thank you.
Thanks a bunch!
Perfect, just perfect.
Thanks a lot!
I continue to listen to this rendition. Ive listened to others ,many in fact. I have to say once again that this is the best. Perfect, just so very perfect, Thank you. Tony Paulson
Stunning.
My Goodness God resides in this beautiful music. Well done. A wonderful Christmas Day to all.
It’s certainly beautiful. But it has nothing to do with god.
Now my favourite piece of choral music.... something I listen to frequently. So blissful and divine. Relatively unknown - a gem. Thank you Morten.
Really the best Version !!
captivating and heart-mending... into our darkness, the Light comes.... thank you
Excellent in every way. A true act of worship.
hartelijk gefeliciteerd met jullie verjaadag
This is an excellent performance of this beautiful motet. I can understand every word. Bravo!!
One of my most loved choir songs executed to near perfection!! Subscribed :)
Thank you very much!
Magnificent! The balnce between vocals is exactly on point (so many choirs are soprano-heavy)! The dynamics are also very much on point, and that's no small achievement even for a world-class chorale. To be able to make those crescendos and decrescendos have the necessary contrast isn't easy without a very large chorale. My sincere, deep compliments and admiration! This may be my favorite recording of Lauridsen's masterpiece!
Bravi to all. Gentle and tender approach. Loving.
Oh, my goodness. What a superb job they did. The director had a deep understanding of the text/music relationship and was able to get that understanding realized through the voices of the choir. Their enunciation was clear and the different sections of the choir were distinct in their parts. Bravo!!
THE ACOUSTIC!!!
Overwhelming beauty
not the person who had to cough at the end gggg
this piece is otherwordly, ethereal. this choir does a great job performing it.
i wanna sing this again so much.
The best recording of this composition. The perfect pace allows for sublime expression. Beautiful.
Superb ensemble, dynamics, tuning and an ending of unsurpassed peace. There is an atmosphere of repose and wonder that returns us momentarily to that unity and peace we crave.
Fantastici stupenda esecuzione
I don't think I've heard a more moving performance. It was an instant Facebook post, and I hope it moves others the way it has me. What a perfect piece for Christmas, and a modern classic.
I can't even begin to explain how much I enjoy listening to this. Such a beautiful rendition. Superb. I wish I could be there either listening to you people or singing this piece with you. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from Argentina.
Fede Rosso Thank you so much! Welcome to Sweden any day :)
If I could choose where to end this mortal life it would be in the Turner gallery at the Tate Britain, London with this playing.
That could be arranged.
Graham Noble Nice of you to offer but I was hoping for a few more years yet and not sure if the Tate would appreciate it. Regards Colin
Lol!!!!!
How beautiful ❤ transcendent!
This is why, for all my years, I've been in love with choral music - good choral music; and now listening to this, through my tears, I'm thanking God for the gift he has given us, to write, to hear and to perform music like this. I am thrilled to be able to sing this piece this Spring under the direction of Brian Dearing (Mamcco) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Perfection! Such a beautifully balanced and melodically controlled performance of this magnificent manuscript. A real joy and my go to version. There are many versions of this on RUclips and all are good but this is quite simply sublime. Thank you
This is one of the most moving pieces of music I’ve heard in many/many years. It’s the performance and direction. Well done, just beautiful
This sound. Heart stopping. ❤️
Wow!.....this choir is very very sharp. Very moving anointed and worshipful. .....Lifted my spirit. I've listened to many choirs sing this wonderful piece....and this is right up there with the best. Thank you so much.
How incredibly beautiful! Oh my!!! Thank you! ❤
Amazing rendition! Loved it! Someone get that person at the end a cough drop!
