Erik, any time you want to geek out and share a new tool, and more significantly, your joy at having and using it, I'm here for it. No apology necessary. Sure we come for the woodworking, but we stay for the humanity and enthusiasm - and even the words that are hard - of the content creator. Keep it up.
Anyone woodworker watching this knows exactly how excited it is to have a knew tool that you've been looking forward to having. Thank you for sharing that moment!
Eric, I know this is my3rd comment on this video but i think it's important for you to know that your insights on the aesthetics of a piece have truly helped me to look at what I'm building in a more complete light and given me an additional joy in the building process. Thank you.
That means a lot to me. That's the whole reason I talk about these things. Glad to know it's resonating. And don't ever apologize for adding more engagement 😂
Honestly, although I have not had a splinter of wood under my fingernails for a while, I feel for you. I'm learning from you and along with you, from your ups and downs and your joys and pains. They are all grist to my mill, even the frustration of trying to find a quiet time during normal working hours to shoot your video was funny. It reminded me that the only good thing mentally about working unsocial hours was the quiet. The rest was a dumpster fire. Your videos are shaping how people will relate to woodworking through your content in so many positive ways. From your design and aesthetic choices, to your technical expertise, your work ethic, anf your humour, you're providing a deep well to draw from. Happy Birthday and many happy returns. Thank you for your work.
Massive props for taking a moment to celebrate the sanctity in feelings and things. (I think you do it in all of your videos). And, as always, thanks for the education, Eric.
Eric --> Thank you for sharing that special moment with the HNT Gordon Plane!!! ❣ 💯 👍 It made this video so much more enjoyable! Like you, I treasure those times when we wait so long for something and finally obtain it. Just like Christmas morning as a small child. It's M A G I C !!!!💥
Came here for the woodworking. Stayed for the unbridled joy in a new wonderful tool. There is no shame in showing us your inner child; it reminds us to take time to enjoy what we do.
Absolutely love, Love, LOVE Hearne Hardwoods! Rick, the owner, his family and everyone else who works there are awesome and the prices and selections are phenomenal! And it's only a few miles from the new bow shop we're building. I must say, I really appreciate the way you consider the minutia of the design layout. Getting grain and patterns to work in unison and complement the overall design. You didn't mention it in the video but the way the chevrons of the figure of the back panel are pointing up, will raise the eye upwards through the cabinet which will give a visual lift to the piece since I assume that this will be a floor cabinet i.e. a low set piece of furniture. As always, looking great 👍Oh, yeah. Glad I'm not the only one who nerds out over special new tools! Enjoy the new toy! 😁
You’ve got a good eye for design! That was absolutely a consideration. In fact that's why I usually have my bookmatches or cathedrals face upward--to draw the eye up!
@@ENCurtis Thank you! That means a lot coming from a pro at your level. Always enjoy watching your process and how you work through the design & the project.
Terry from HNT Gorden is a national treasure, I love all my planes that he has made, I can highly recommend that smoother, it is amazing both as a smoother and a scraper. A lifetime of joy right there. Love the channel and your presentation. Happy Birthday, well deserved.
I love the joy and excitement. Please keep sharing that and never lose the child thrill again. And I love the straight line of the back panel. It’s beautiful.
When the passion for manual work is combined with a tool, there's no way we won't feel the childish excitement when we have a special one, even if we're 100 years old, if we ever get there. HAPPY BIRTHDAY... accept a big European HUG Erik [Lisbon, Portugal]
Happy Birthday man! Just wanted to say your videos are top-notch - I’m learning so much (and loving every minute). Also, gotta admit, that beard adds a certain charm to the workshop vibe - suits you perfectly! Cheers from across the pond x
Aaand who got a wee bit moist over the HNT?.....They are certainly right up there for quality and useability and look just so shmexy. All the best bits come from Straya 😁
@ENCurtis earlier this year I purchased a 71ct and a 271ct. Both have changed how I'm going to do a few projects. With the addition of the 2 I just got, maybe things will go together cleaner.
Damn Erik, that plane is something special! I'm really happy for you. Great choice changing to the vertical pattern. I agree that the first side might have been too busy.
I love the smoother. That panel looks beautiful. Thanks for showing. Reminds me of the doppler effect and I would never have thought of that, but wow! More please!
That panel looks fantastic in place. Keep doing what your doing, I'm enjoying watching the process. And that plane....DAaayyyuuum! Is that thing sweet. I could watch a 20 minute video of you just taking shavings from different species of wood and smiling and giggling as each one fluttered from your hands to the bench top. I know a hand plane is essentially a simple tool, but there is just something magical about how they work and how that feels.
Just to add to the aura surrounding that plane, I'm stunned that that plane is machined so well out of Gidgee. I live north of Brisbane Australia and I have occasional access to Gidgee. It is that hard that it chips, snaps, breaks carbide turning bits. I'd no more work that stuff with hand tools than try working some basalt rock. Enjoy. You have an incredible tool.
I completely agree about keeping it fresh. I've yet to really master any one skill, because on each build I try to incorporate new things to try. It helps to keep things interesting. And I, for one, don't want to do the same thing over and over. Great video as always. Thank you. Oh yeah, I also agree about the "feeling like a kid" thing, when I get something new I've been eyeing for a bit. Great feeling !!!
Thanks Erik! I’m in the middle of building my second plane, inspired by the plane you built recently. Just saying that to say I’m intrigued by the new plane you just showed in this video. 😊
Oh yea lots better than that first angled one……me likes it. I own a HNT small spoke shave and love it, don’t think I will be able to have a hand plane like your beauty so I will enjoy watching you use yours. Enjoy your day.
Erik, that panel is a work of art. That is a lofty aesthetic goal for me at this stage if the game. I won't see grain matching the same way again. PS: I reached the reveal at the end. Yknow the client might not put anything in this cabinet. It looks that good.
Why did I watch you veneer a back panel for 16:45? Because it was almost as beautiful as that smoothing plane. I have to say "almost" because that plane was as smooth as it's name suggests.
Until the panel was in place, I did not like it. It was chaotic and would conflict with the rest of the grain patterns, but once it was in place, I think it is stunning! You nailed it! Can't wait till you get through with your travels so you can finish it!
It's really looking good! Love the composition! I know that feeling, getting a great tool, (especially hand tools), you feel like a kid with a new toy! 😆 Especially since I can't afford that Lamborghini, LOL!
Beautiful work, as always! And… re your new smoothing plane… was the blade perfect right out of the packaging, or did you have to sharpen/hone it a bit?
That appears to be a very nice hand plane, and I did look at their web site. Another plane that I like, well, planes, are made by Stavros Gakos. They bring tears to your eyes they are so well done...
Love your builds and videos. What is the marker/pencil you use for the white labels? I assume it comes off easily since you mark the veneers with it. Thanks, Aric.
Those HNT Gordon planes are very nice aren't they. I have the medium shoulder plane and it's a wonderful plane. Wikipedia says that Gidgee is grown in arid or semi-arid areas of Australia (there's a crapton of places like that down here) so that would suggest that it's not a tropical hardwood.
Thanks man. Yeah the entire layup plus filming took maybe a day and half. As always, would be far more efficient if I wasn't filming but hey, that's half the job 😂
It's veneer tape (also called gum tape). When pressing in a bag, blue tape can cause issues. Veneer tape is thinner and will release with water so avoids pulling up any fibers on the veneered face.
As someone who will only ever really make things for the joy of making it (ie not to make money) I have no real interest in production efficiency (trying to up skill on more hand tool / traditional woodworking because of this) I really enjoy the details and thought you put into things... Going the extra mile/long route for a bunch of small touches that add up is a big plus for me!
