Not only informative, but very entertaining! (1:50 - “All conifers, when you put them in the ground, will sit and stare at you for a year…” Thank you!
I'm in zone 7 & planted 13 of these so far. 1-2ft tall & they are doing well so far! I love your videos. Very helpful for a beginner like me! 😊
I'm also in zone 7. I have already lost 4 of them this summer. I watered them daily for about 15 minutes for first several months and then cut back to every other day.
How much have they grown in the year?
I just bought 12 small aborvites on sale for 3 bucks each. I sat down to do a search on them and before I had a chance to Google it. There you were 😅. Thank you for the great info!
Thank you for all the info!! Just bought some yesterday, sticking them in the groundbright now!😊👍
For those people looking for a similar size screening tree, that will tolerate heat and drought, check out the Skyrocket Juniper. While the Emerald Green Arborvite is a beautiful tree, it does not tolerate heat, wind or drought well at all. The Skyrocket Juniper has a more silvery-blue foliage, and it grows about 15' high and 3' in diameter. I live in Central California, In zone 9b, and the hotter it gets the faster the Skyrocket Juniper grows (about 18" plus per year). I have 40 Skyrocket Junipers in my yard , and they are all growing great. They have gone from 4' to about 10' in just under 3 years, and they have survived temperature extremes from 28 degrees up to 110 degrees in 40+ MPH winds. I just wanted to make this comment since I see a lot of people looking for a hot weather alternative to the Emerald Green Arborvite. However, Jim is spot on with his descriptions and suggestions, as usual.
I have had one in the back of my town home for 4 years. It is 5 and a half feet tall , green and very healthy in Tennessee.
That is impressive. I am in south TN, but the tree faces south side of the house and gets full sun from 8am to 7pm and it was 12ft tall by then. Just cut it down. Gotta plant another like way way farther away.
What direction does the back of your house face?.. i can't see it from here.
I've planted Leyland and Arizona Cypress as well as Green Giant and Emerald Green Arborvitaes. The only tree I've had issues with were the Emerald Green's. I live in zone 7B (Mississippi) I'm not sure what I did wrong but the foliage turned brown eventually almost the entire tree was brown. I'm not sure what I did wrong but my other trees which are now about 3 years old are doing great. I just didn't have any luck with the Emerald Green Arborvitae.
I agree I have Leland cypress grow with no problems…emerald arborvitae’s have given me nothing but trouble!
We planted 15 trees, watered and mulched, they all started dying, browning, mildew and blight after 3 weeks. I took all the mulch off, poked holes around the root ball, I’m now treating them alternating between baking soda spray and hydrogen peroxide spray, plus watering occasionally with diluted hydrogen peroxide. Mulching incorrectly cuts off oxygen to the roots. I now water 40 min. Once a week with a soaker hose. The first year these seem to be high maintenance
I hope they revived. What ratio hydrogen peroxide & water for foliage spray and for roots??
What ratio baking soda & water?
While recovering did you have them in full sun?
Yes mine always die, Ive had 12
Grow them in pots. They do way better. Just use one part peat moss 1 part pearlyte. Use slow release in the hole and mulch over the top. Water every day for 1 year every other day for 2 years depending on zone maybe more or less.
Did they bounce back and take off?
I just spent a couple of hours hand picking bagworms off my arborvita trees. Couldn't reach a couple of them at the very top so I used a "pooper scooper" to catch the high up ones!
WOW! Thank you for posting this video! It was extremely helpful as I planted 9 of these and only 2 MIGHT make it but now I know how to plant them again so hopefully they'll all grow this time.
In zone 8b, PNW, in HOT temps, full sun & they are everywhere.
I'm trying one of these out as a bonsai in zone 9 I'll have to watch it close in the summer
Very helpful info. I'm transplanting my arborvitae tomorrow. BTW anybody else here see that dog disappear in the right back corner?
I just bought one for $6! I needed this video
In Europe we prune these into shapes. My neighbor has a few he pruned into globes. I’ve kept these smaller for 25 years by rounding top.
If you have deer in your area, Emerald Green Arbs are a NO GO. The deer will obliterate them. If you have deer nearby and want a 12 to 15' evergreen, consider junipers or hollies, there are plenty to choose from.
Wow. Spittin some hard core intel. Thank you for your knowledge!
great video, can you recommend a screen plant that won't grow quite so high as the Green Giant- looking for approx 20 feet
Did you find plant? I'm looking for one, but not wider than 6 feet.
Hello. Very informative video ! I was considering planting a row of 10 or so emerald arborvitae in a 46 x 5' raised bed beyond a retaining wall. I would like to keep them around 6 ft max, but in listening to your video you suggested this might not be the best application for these. Is there another type of evergreen I should be considering? I'm looking for that classic Christmas tree shape. Thanks !
Hello. Thank you for the video. I’m wondering, what should I do with newly planted, two foot plants in zone 6 in Maryland to prep them for winter? Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial, I was looking for something to place on either side of our business entrance. Looks like this one won’t work. I’ll keep looking.
We live in Georgia and were just getting ready to purchase 25 of these, but sounds like it may get too hot here. Can you recommend a comparable treee that will grow as fast and used for privacy?
I'm in some 5 and we get bag worms too. But hand picking them off works well.
Will 4 feet between my fence and concrete be enough to plant this tree for privacy or should I get something smaller, I just need about 8 feet tall plant or tree or something...my house is on a corner lot and the side of the house facing street is where I would like to add a privacy screen so people won't see the inside of my yard. My yard sits high so everybody that drives by or walks by can see me. I thought about lattice too but I like the idea of a natural privacy barrier better..like I mentioned before I have about 4 feet of dirt between fence and concrete slab.. I will be needing something too to block my neighbor since he has a 2 house story facing my back yard.
Yes thats enough
I'm on the same boat, have you plan it since? How did it turn out?
@@michaelc4866 no I have not plant anything yet? What about u?
@@futbol1972 i was looking to see how I can fill the holes in have between the trees... But it looks like the space aren't enough to plant new ones.
Just wanted to thank you for sharing.
I live in Texas And it's currently Middle of November.
Is it too late to purchase and plant?
Will it survive the winter?
Or should i keep in a pot but transfer to larger pot?
I love this type of tree. Im just trying to research before i purchase. I wanna keep it healthy and not stress it.
I have nosy neighbors ☹
I have nosy neighbors ☹
I live in Japan and want to plant a couple of these in front of the house. The soil is a bit rich but has gravel on the top layer. Will these grow well in this zone. I’m not sure what zone I’m in.
Hi Jim. We grow these in 9b and they grow nicely. Perhaps slower due to heat but they dont wilt or die from heat here. Just my 2 cents
So would the American do better in Dallas 8a/b for screening? Or Cherry laurel better?
I planted 11 about 3 years ago and so far they are growing slow. I think one reason is that there's no drip system and only watered them when i had time. Some are bit skinny and one actually died. Any advise on how to make them grow fast?
I just bought ten today. Excited
Good luck with them
I love this plant and wanted to plant it as a screen for our pool. But we are in Zone 9 (California, were is can get over a 100 in the summer) so I'm guessing I can't plant these. What other fast growing and tall trees can we get instead?
Arizona Cypress
I have 3 that grew beautifully, they‘re about 15‘ tall. Then last year I planted 2, one took, the other died. Those 2 are in a shaded area but I need The privacy,. Since one took I’m hoping the new one will take. Do you know similar plants that provide 15‘ ft height but like shade?
Thanks for the video. I know the best time to plant is spring. But can you plant these in the summer or fall? Also how close to the fence can they be?
I’m not sure why you’re saying you can’t keep arborvitae size contained. I have 2 on my foundation that are topiary and I’ve maintained them at 8 1/2 feet under my gutters for years.
Would it be OK to plant along a fence? I have my backyard fenced and part of it shows in the front of the house and I wanted to plant the belong there to just hide the backyard because my dogs keep it not looking so pretty. Im in 7b too. AR Ozarks. Also, the website where I purchased them said 3-5ft per year. I had a feeling it was an exaggeration! I've got pure clay veins. It's pretty when you dig into one! What's weird is, I've planted several trees, and lots of perineals, and I've found less than 5 rocks! When I was a kid every few months we had to go out to pasture and pick up rocks, the same thing pasture grew rocks! Lol I thought Arkansas had more rocks than it had soil so whomever came and got all the rocks out of my soil I'm forever grateful! But because on my relatively large city lot I have 3 silver maples the roots make up for the lack of rock! LOL the big silver maple is so gorgeous, it hangs almost like a weeping willow, otherwise, I'd have them removed! I hate those, gown on top of the dirt roots! I mow part of my lawn on 3 and part on 2! My friend S me why don't just MOL on 3, but I just don't like it that tall. I don't know why anyone would plant a silver maple? These may have just grown there. I pull up hundreds and hundreds of maple trees a year! I have never seen seeds germinate as well as those deeds do without even trying. The other day there are 7 silver Maple trees Rowan and the corner of my roof in the gutter! I am female and Dang near 60 years old it was probly quite a sight watching may climb up there and pull trees out of my gutter lol
Is there something similar for zone 9b? I would love an emarold arborvitae but it's too hot here in zone 9b.
Mine is approaching one year in the ground. Now I have spotted a couple of dried out spots on the plant. We just had a month of drought but I did water a little. No signs of growth.
Question- I want a screening evergreen, but you mentioned in the green giant video about using different things than your neighbors as these are becoming popular. What other evergreens would you suggest for screening that reach about 20ft tall, zone 8a mostly clay. I really enjoy your videos, great for every level of gardener.
Hi Bakersfield, Ca. It's hot in the summer my 12 Arborvitae first year plants in October last year three of them are showing brown ends one a lot I believe its the heat so I spray off twice a day for more humidity and increased the water on a drip at 5 gal per day. I'll trim brown off when the heats over. Lost on what to do they are canopied by 30 yr old redwood trees 25 ft. away I have 18 of those and they are doing well on sprinkler sprayer 20 min a day. So any suggestions on the browning. I don't want them to die I'm on 1/2 acre they are my wind breakers and noise reduction plan.
Please tell us why we get the brown spots on the Emerald Green, we planted 3 last fall. They did great all summer, now within a month one plant has a lot of brown needles, not sure what to do. It is a distance from house, can’t have drip I hand water. Please advise what to do. Thank you in advance.
How often should new plants be watered the first year with a spray nozzle on a garden hose?
@Alden Buyer Very good advise! For the homeowner that is not going to check the soil dampness, I'd suggest weekly when the summer temperature is 90 degrees or less and twice weekly when it gets over 90 degrees. That assumes little summer rain as we experience in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. This would also be guidance for the first summer. After that arbs should be well rooted in and do fine all summer without watering except for the unusual (for Oregon) 95+ hot dry spell every few years. My timing assumes the plants are well watered as you suggest.

Recommendation for a privacy hedge that will work better than emerald green in zone 8a and has the same 3-5ft max width?
I'm in zone 10a. Any recommendations on a hedge plant that would do well in my area? south texas. Tia
Hi Jim. I live in eastern Nebraska. We do get quite hot in the July August months. On a 5 foot spacing I’d have to plant close to 200 trees along the road. So watering that many would be an issue. I’ve watched multiple videos and these appear to need water quite regularly. Would I be better planting more of a local tree such as a red cedar? I plan on adding a second row of blue spruce on the inside part of these next spring. Thanks for the input.
I have a green emrald arb I want to transplant. Right now it is against a privacy fence and dead on that side for lack of sun. Transplanting to full sun. So the question is, will the dead side fill in once it gets sun?
Awesome video! Can I plant these behind a shed? There is about 5 feet of space behind the shed, so when fully grown there may be only about two feet. The shed height is about 10 - 11' tall and 12 feet long, and will block the morning sun shining from the east. They will get full afternoon to evening sun from the west.
Recommendation for more shaded area? Landscaper suggested emerald green worried about light requirements and Deer
Great info Jim ..thanks for sharing !
Thanks for watching.
Hi thanks for great video, I just planted 25 of those in my garden but some of them have arrived with broken tips and my question is if they will grow taller or not?
Nice video.. I live in zone 7 new York.. Can I plant them in November or early December month???
Will they turn brown in that year of not growing ? I have some along a fence I had planted in fall of last year and I am seeing brown on a lot of them. I am in zone 6b
What time of year is best to plant these?
Thank you for educating me. I am new to gardening, so I really appreciate watching your videos. One of my Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd is a little brown inside. What should I do to fix it?
me to. my tree have a month to plant now little brown close to the root Im from north Alabama
I think water them more
Hi! I just bought 3 of these and of course then watched your video. I live in western Oklahoma zone 7. Could I plant them on the east or north side of our house and possibly deter some heat stress that way? They would get sun till about 1 or 2pm in the summer then shade during the heat of the day.
They will need at least six hours of direct sun to not get leggy. So I definitely would do the north, but maybe the east would work.
@@JimPutnam i am looking something like this but i want to keep it a large concrete 16in depth 24 inch diameter Pod it will grow large at least 9 ft
Perfect! Thanks for such a detailed instructions .
Thanks for watching.
@@JimPutnam I have a nursery evergreen arborvitae but turning yellow, but still some green dont know why? I water 3 times a week in 80 degree. Should I fetilize or sun burn?
Looking to getting some that are groomed in a spiral. How often should they be trimmed to keep them that way. Thanks
I planted 3 of these trees spaced 3 feet apart about 5 years ago. The trees are about 6 feet tall. Should I replant with the objective of spacing the trees further apart?
I don't know what "zone" means but I live in northern Utah. Will it survive here?
I just bought an Emerald Green Arborvitea at my local Lowe's store in Buckeye,Arizona zone 9b. Why would they sell something that can't grow in my area? Is there any way that I can give it it's best chance to grow in my yard?
I just put 5 in the ground today should i move them or will they be ok? I planted them 3.5 feet apart. I found a solution to protect them from pests for 12 months and feeds. Hopefully it actually works.
Water them! Often! I planted 8, 4-5 feet apart, doing well after 3 years, have grown about a foot since planting. 3.5 seems a little tight but maybe okay. Mine are growing wide because they have the room, and I can walk between them easily.
What is the best way to get these trees to be chubby and hit the 3-4’ width?
I planted 9 of these along the front of my house by the road this last fall of 2017. I live in Michigan, and we had a very cold winter this year. 2 out of the 9 have very bad wind burn all the way around, but are green on the inner part. I’m wondering if I should wait and be patient to see how they do once we get some warmer weather, or should I replace them?
Thanks in advance!
I would give them some time, but conifers can be slow to repair themselves. So maybe pull them out if it doesn't look promising by late spring.
Ok thank you so much! 😊
Here in CA, San Francisco Bay Are I’ve got spider mites in my fuchsia and alkaline clay soil so I’ll find a different plant than this. I love the topiary of this.
So many people do not know how to grow these trees. Are they underwatered? Three will look fine and the the 3 will brown totally.
I live in california in the high desert area, in the summer we a lot of days of 100 degrees and the winter it goes down to about 30 at night. I have a spot where they will get sun all day. Will they grow in my area?? How much water will they need?

Are you familiar with the skybound arborvitae?
Hi, what shrubs that are related would you recommend that grow around 5'. Thank you!
I am in southeast MI and my newly planted arborvitae have some winter burn on one side rom this past winter. Will these recover?
Very informative video! Thank you so much!!
Great video. I planted a row of 3-foot-tall arborvitaes last spring and was told not to fertilize this year. Do you recommend fertilizing since this will be the second year?
You can fertilize in the second year but it's recommended to water your soil first to avoid root burn as cedars have shallow roots. Good luck!
Hi, pls can I use emerald in front of the garage
What fertilizer? Someone said hollytone isn't the best... can you confirm?
Hi Jim I was thinking about planting these with Leyland Cypress along my property line for privacy would it be ok to plant them together and if so how many feet apart would you recommend? Thanks.
Leyland Cypress grow extremely fast and will give you privacy quickly but the lifespan is short. Might want to consider something native and research lifespans.
I absolutely love these trees for screening plants and planted 15 of them along my driveway. I am on the hunt for a screening plant between my yard and the neighbor's. The issue is its a very wet, soggy area. What would you suggest for a screening plant that can tolerate wet conditions and provide privacy?
You may be able to find a good ornamental grass to plant at the base of your trees. Some of those grasses grow 4-6 ft or more.
I just added a row of this couple months ago and I already lost 3 because they turned completely brown (replaced with another 3), now a couple more turning brown as well and some show brown from bottom up some show top down so I don't know if I water to much or not enough. I use garden hose to water them every other day. Please help.
have about 11 4ft arbovitaes planted last 2017 and they are growing very slow and thin. One died. One thing i failed to do was to water regularly after planted. Any suggestion how to make them grow fast and grow wider ? Thanks in Advance!
I had one that was so old and huge it was infringing on our circular driveway. My son chopped it down when I wasn't looking. I would have moved the driveway.

What do you recommend for privacy to plant along a 6' fence in the backyard in New England? I want something that will block the neighbors deck all year long and grow about 10-12' since our houses are so close together. Easy to maintain would be nice too. The yard doesn't have a lot of direct sunlight either. Thoughts?
Emerald green lol
I'm in zone 7b Looking for privacy planting full sun and this sounded great until the thing about the dryer soil conditions and taking years to recover the brown/dead foliage. Do you have any suggestions? I was considering Emeralds , Nellie stevens hollie, or green giants only I don't want to prune too often. I subscribed keep it up.

Can these be trimmed to have a flat top instead of Christmas tree type of top?

What do you recommend for fertilizing arborvitae trees?
Hi! I just planted a row of these five days ago into my heavy clay soil amended with garden soil and their bottom branches are drooping! Please help. I’m so nervous they’re going to die. I watered them thoroughly upon planting and again the next day and the soil is still wet (used a pH/moisture/light meter). Could they be dropping because they’re too wet? Should I water again? I haven’t fertilized them but have some tree and shrub fertilizer spikes I could add. Should I go ahead with those?
John On RUclips did you ever figure out the issue with your trees?

Jim- I am planting these (15 gallons) in NC 7b in clay 6++ hours of full sun (they fit the width bill and nearby septic field concerns). I am installing an irrigation drip line for them. I am on a 5 gmp well so want to use caution running the irrigation for too long...but what is your suggested time and frequency for say june-september? I am not super comfortable for running the drip for more than an hour at a time would that be ok?... do it every day? Every other day? Thx!

@@andrenaline6554 that’s what we did! Thanks!
I love this tree. However, I have a small patio and need to plant a similar tree in a pot. Any recommendation?
Most conifers will be smaller when the roots are limited by a pot. You could plant Emerald Green Arborvitae in a pot but just think of it as something to appreciate for several years and then replace if it gets too big. A Dwarf Hinoki Cypress would be smaller and more interesting.
