@@masterpassword7520 still researching but read at least 2-3 ft away/apart. The side I planned to place the trees is sloped so I may place farther than suggested.
I am planting some today and have been going back and forth on the distance apart. They are almost 6' and pretty lush. I don't want to wait years to block my neighbor's windows. It's good to see that 2 1/2 feet apart will still grow up to be beautiful healthy trees. This was my main concern. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for making this video..We hired landscaping company to plant ten 5 ft tall Emerald green Arborvitaes n they planted them very tight n one by one they are dying 😢..We are not sure of how to care..We invested a lot(for our budget) on these..But the ones that we planted by ourselves are 1-2ft tall n 3ft apart are doing great.. Keep making these videos..
Great set of videos. Could you do another update now that it's been over a year since your last one? I would love to see the progress and health of the trees. Maybe also some more video tour of your deck, cedar fence, and shower. Looks private and comfy! Kudos
I went to Lowe's yesterday and bought 2..Will buy 2 more each week until I can get a front wall of them in front of the spruces that were already here in our property..They don't do a good job in blocking out the filthy roddy neighbors behind us....By the way I love your spread....
Growing a solid hedge is done often. You are fortunate that yours stayed nice and green. Some browning out happens in my area MI zone 6. These are very common in many yards, so I said "never". That is until I bought & planted the 1st one, then another, and so on. But a used plant is even better yet if a guy can get them! If I ever got the chance for some used I would find some space for a few more..
just now planting 2.5ft trees that i grew from saplings in pot maybe 3/4" wide stems. putting 4ft apart. good luck future hedge, idk if i will be here to see them be dense and maybe someone will change it. its for the front yard but its a corner house side by stop sign. also want them for neighbor side too to feel cozy. they are good for blocking view of a/c heating unit too which i used and side yard. 6ft would be good enough for me.
Thanks Christ Brown for sharing. Today is end of October 2024. I will take your much appreciated advice and start using Plant Tone come spring. Oh, I planted about 15 of the Abrovitaes. Lost a few but were qucikly replaced. Hopefully in a few years they will look as nice are the ones in your video. Cheers from New Mexico.
Bobby was right. Evergreens in general like acidic soils, so hollytone is a good fertilizer. Arborvitaes are the exception. I was laughing when I heard you say “used”! 😂
Looks great, but why not plant something like juniper Spartan, they grow high enough to give great privacy from neighbours, they look great & don't have to be pruned "topped" as much if at all. For all the negative comments, it's usually from ppl that have never planted a thing in their lives. Otherwise great job
I've been looking into these the past couple years. I have 5 acres and have a tentative plan to box in part of my property with giant emerald greens and my immediate back yard with these guys. That 2.5' spacing really looks great as far as dense coverage while keeping the trees healthy and lush.
Your privacy trees look marvelous. I like the 'used' idea, did you know someone or get them online on facebook, etc.? I'm a beach girl, and I love an outdoor shower. Now, where-ever I live, I like to shower and wash my hair outdoors. Hearing the birds sing and smelling the plants and trees refreshes my mind and my body!
Thanks. Yeah they work really well as a privacy fence. And I got the "used" trees on Marketplace from somebody giving them away. Not really worth it though since it's a ton of work getting them out of the ground without killing them in a little bit risky because there's good chance they will die. Best to do it in the fall just before winter. Outside showers are the best! I totally agree. There's just something magical about it
Very nice job and well explained - all looking good. I'm going to plant the same type of hedge very soon. Here in the UK I am advised that I can leave the hessian wrap (cloth ) and the wire mesh on the root balls when I plant them as they are both de-composable. I am now worried that I should remove them as I think you mentioned. If anyone knows the answer please let me know - I would be very grateful - thanks.
Thanks Brian I appreciate the feedback. Yes I would personally at least put some slits in the fabric. But in either case I'm sure you will be just fine. The roots will grow out of them. I did remove the burlap from mine when I planted
If you leave something in front of them that blocks the sun. That section will die. I piled up some firewood on one side of my 5 trees. The bottom facing the firewood died on all 5 trees.
Some of my neighbors plant these 1.5-2 feet apart. Is that way too close? Mine are 3 feet and I’m kind of regretting it because they seem so far apart. Did I make the right decision?
The mature size of these is 3-10 feet in diameter. You will have better coverage if you would cut out every other tree and allow them to grow to fill the gaps. If you do not, you will have the dead bare branches like those that you show on the corner tree.
I mean so far they're doing pretty good. I don't think I'll mess with them. Guess we'll see how long they last. Should be interesting. I'll probably do like a 15-year update video
Awesome update! When you moved the two in the back, did you space them 30in apart like the rest of the hedge or go 48in like your neighbor's hedge? Also, do you have to do any extra work on the ones planted 30in apart to keep them from browning?
They are mosquito nests. I made the mistake of planting some next to my porch. They are tough. I had some 12 footers by the road. During a bad snow storm one of them broke in half. I cut it off and in 3 years you could not tell. It looked just like the the others next to it.
I would like to put a few in my backyard alongside my fence. I have a aboveground pool that is about 15ft from the fence, and I don't know if the roots will affect it.
Do you have a problem with bag worms on your trees? I'm looking for a hedge type tree and am thinking about this type to keep my VERY nosy neighbors prying eyes out of my backyard. I'll have about 50 or 60 linear feet that needs to be covered. In Northwestern Missouri here. Glad I found your channel!
Never heard of Bagworms until they killed 3 of mine pretty quick it seemed. I basically picked them all off and threw them in the fire pit. You will have to keep an eye out for the ones you missed and go over the tree several times and through the summer. They hang on branch with a silky thread and will suffocate the branches so you should try to remove the threading. I used a small/fine pair of electrician diagnols FWIW. Not sure if there is a holistic remedy but having 2 kids doesn't lend itself to sit down and research it thoroughly. Haven't figured out how to prevent them yet as I was gonna transfer one today but just found out it should be done in the fall. Dunno if it can be done in March and hoping someone has an answer to do so. This nonGreen Thumb could use any and all advice please.
Great video Chris. I planted 7 about 4 ft apart a little over 3 years ago. They were about 5ft tall when I planted them. Unfortunately I have some very intuitive seniors behind me that love peering over the fence to complain about something. Long story short. My trees are about 8ft tall now. I’m just hoping they shoot up soon but I got quite a gap in two of them. Was this a problem you encountered before they filled in all the way? I can send you a photo if that helps. Thanks for the video.
Wish I could have those. My neighbors are sometimes noisy and kick up dust with their ATV's that blows into my property. But, I live in Arizona zone 9b so I can't grow those trees here.
@@NoNonsenseKnowHow I planted a row of eucalyptus trees but I own 10 acres and so does my neighbor. The row doesn't span the whole property line and they don't keep the dust from blowing onto my property.
Will 4 feet between my fence and concrete be enough to plant this tree for privacy or should I get something smaller, I just need about 8 feet tall plant or tree or something...my house is on a corner lot and the side of the house facing street is where I would like to add a privacy screen so people won't see the inside of my yard. My yard sits high so everybody that drives by or walks by can see me. I thought about lattice too but I like the idea of a natural privacy barrier better..like I mentioned before I have about 4 feet of dirt between fence and concrete slab.. I will be needing something too to block my neighbor since he has a 2 house story facing my back yard.

Used trees are cool. Wish more folks would consider re-homing unwanted trees (if they can feasibly be removed with roots intact).

You can definitely use holly tone, it just depends on where your soil ph is at.
