Gale is upfront with you, at least. And he seems emotionally mature enough to accept that being booted out of the party is a legtimate possibility. The first time you learn that Astarion is a vampire is after he's bitten you in your sleep. Then acts like a beaten stray dog when you reprimand him for it. To be fair to poor Astarion, not only is the threat he poses much smaller in scale, but he did a very good job of managing it until the night he outed himself. He also is very bad at concealing the secret, considering you can clearly see his fangs and red eyes from the moment you meet. The only reason the characters don't see it is because the writers give everyone just a bit of blindness to details.
