    In my opinion, sand rails have more of a soul than a factory built side by side. Sure side by sides are cool, but there's some more charm to a sand rail that a side by side will never have. Probably because outside of a small number of manufacturers, a lot of sand rails are home built.

      Love this.. because that’s exactly how I feel about the sand rail. It’s special, and I won’t see another one exactly like it. The original paint job sold me. The time and effort that went into it. Everything done by hand, and built with pride. I feel honored to own it.

    I have a sandrail. I love it. I would not buy a sxs for out there. It's safer for my family and I think it's more fun. It's also cheaper then a sxs for a family car. By the time you do doors, cage, tires.... and they weigh close to the same. A pro r is 2340lbs. My car is 2380 full of fuel. I have a 4 seat ls powered car. Naturally aspirated. I do less maintenance then my friends with sxs. I leave my coach and trailer down there in storage. Drop it off the middle of September and it comes home the end of March. That's the easiest way I have found.

      "One trick pony" I don't think so! I have taken mine over every pass except black bear in and around Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and Lake City. The only reason I won't go down black bear is turning radius and a high reverse gear. Mine is a pre-runner with a s-4d mendeola with the lowest gears I can get. It still does 120mph. I mostly use it like a jeep. Water crossings and big puddles suck ass. Other than that I kill anything but a dirt bike in capable hands. 24" of travel rolling on 37" tires tends to put things at the next level compared to any SxS or jeep. Just get the fuck out of my way because I'm coming in hot.

    Downside of your sand rail is your gonna spends $1000’s in maintenance every season. My Mendeola would only last for 4-5 trips. Also you can’t take that sand rail anyplace other than sand dunes. No more dirt or mountain riding.

    • @duneattack
      @duneattack Год назад

      WHEN the rail needs maintenance, it's certainly pretty expensive, but it doesn't need it that often. I have a blown LS, and Mendi S4 and once I finally got it all tuned and HP bumped it's been maintenance free, just fluid changes, CV greasing and nut and bolt checks. I've spent 10's of thousands on the X3 HP boosts, Suspension upgrades and shock tuning. Both sand cars and sxs's have their merits. I love em both. I'll say this, however. I dune mid week and on off weekends, when the sand is pristine to mildly tracked. But when the sand is a mess, hands down the sxs is a far more comfortable duner. It handles the chop and the ruts way better than the big sand car. And the sxs especially shines in the cross ruts compared to the rail. My rail is an SU mid engine.

    Comparing a Sand Rail to a SXS is not a fair comparison. Your Sand Rail was built for one specific place. The Imperial Sand Dunes. That’s it! Your not going to take your sand buggy to Plater City, Superstition, Ocotillo, Johnson Valley, Barstow or Baja.
    A SXS is more of a universal off road machine capable of riding on all types of terrain. While it can be tuned to be better for a specific terrain like the sand dunes, it’s not going to master it, like a purpose built vehicle would.
    The Sand Rail takes more skill to drive as the driver has more going on with shifting & higher hp in most cases and some have cutting brakes.The SXS is going to be more user friendly as a first timer can start it and drive it.
    The real test to see if your still in love with the Sand Rail will be after you pull the engine & trans to have the trans serviced (hopefully not needing a R&P) and after your have used good ol’ Bell Ray grease to rebuild your CV’s. Other then that the buggy should be fairly easy to service & prep.
    I’ve had the buggy’s, prerunners etc. For me the versatility I get with the SXS is what wins me over, plus I have not tore down a CV joint & serviced it in years for a SXS.

      Great insight here! Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences. My question, “which is better, what do you prefer”, is specifically for Glamis. I don’t plan to throw dirt tires on this car and head out to the desert, although we could I suppose. There are many places we love riding, especially in Utah, where we will be needing a SXS in the future. Funny you brought up CV’s.. just pulled them all yesterday to clean and inspect. Messy business :) haha

      When ready next year for a UTV take a serious look at the Speed UTV. It should be out in the customers hands later this year and for next season. It’s going to get you as close to a buggy as a UTV can get with proper suspension design and geometry. It will come with 230hp stock or activate the speed key on E85 and get 300hp from the factory.
      Regarding your CV’s. Make sure you pack them well with grease. Don’t get grease in the cv bolt holes and make sure your bolt threads are grease free when you assemble and tighten up.

    Definitely a sand rail for Glamis!! Funco is the dream for me!! Also my opinion you should get an x3 RR by far best sxs out there at this point. New pro r looks good but I think can am is working on something big in my opinion. You need a sxs for all other riding , rail for Glamis and sxs for anything else. Good luck !!

    I'm in the same boat, sold my XPT and X3 in 21. I'm hoping BRP doesn't change the chassis too much, sight lines were a worthy tradeoff for the handling. My wishlist is for a1630 Rotax from the SeaDoo (300hp closed loop cooling system). The 900 ACE is great overall but did lack low rpm torque until the turbo spooled. I do like the Pro R as well but it seems the proportions may be too big to be playful. One of the other channels parked it next to a short wheelbase Yukon and it wasn't much smaller. Yes the x3 is a limo but when I could choose either of my previous machines I always went for the X3. Great news is they both seem like a solid choice, maybe just avoid the Ronald McDonald launch edition color scheme.

    Haven’t even watched the video yet but I’m going to go ahead and say sandrail 100% for Glamis. But I mean that’s kind of a gimmie. Sandrails we’re designed for dunes. SxS is a much better all around vehicle. You can take both a sandrail and a SxS to the dunes but you won’t see very many sandrails in Mammouth, Utah, Coloarado, Ocotillo Wells, Johnson Valley or a million other amazing places in the country where people are ripping. If you like being a one trick pony, sandrail is the way to go. If you like to explore more then one type of riding then go with a SxS. Now time to watch the video
