Can someone explain how the original national anthem is racist? I’m black and served for 25 years in the Marine Corps! I stood proudly as they displayed the Stars and Stripes every time I heard the tune! I lost many of my best friends in Afghanistan, And Iraq as many other places! Just like how I lost my friends in battle defending that red white a blue flag, a symbol of freedom and greatness. The same goes for the American national anthem! It is a courageous tale of men giving their lives to British mortars and using their bodies as a human shield to keep the colors above! If you think that has any petty thing to do with our race, than I’m sorry brother you have an issue! That song is about the resilience of the new nation, and the power to conquer a common enemy and stand ever strong!
It's not the anthem itself that is racist, it's the nation, what it was founded on, and how it has treated black Americans and POC. The anthem is used as a form a protest because before everything public comes the anthem.

But if you look to the history as well as the additional verses of the Star Spangled Banner (which are not often sung publicly) you will be shocked, saddened and disappointed. Actually the black national anthem was created before the national(ist) anthem! It was created in 1919 compared to 1931. Also the star spangled banner's third stanza celebrates the killing of slaves. It's not an inclusive song. Lift Every Voice is.

It's NOT a separate anthem, and it won't replace the official national anthem.
Given our history of racism with the burden borne most heavily by black people, this is an optimistic song about putting the bad stuff behind, and about black people fully joining our society as equals. You don't need to be black to be moved by that.

This song about unity has been called the Black national anthem since 1919. I’ve been singing it in school since I was a child. Why are people only bothered by it now?
I'm not american but forgive me for saying that this is ridiculous because every black american for over 200 years never had a problem with the national anthem so why add a new one?
Best way to try and avoid racism is to not talk about it or avoid adding fuel to the fire.

You're right, the Anthem was made when the USA had slaves. You're forgetting thousands of people fought to end segregation and slavery and we ended it. This is OUR country. Everyones. One anthem, one people.
not to mention a bunch of countries around the world had slavery about 300 years ago even. slavery was a huge part of human civilization for its entirety, so the fact we got rid of it in only about 300 years when it took the rest of the world thousands of years is quite telling about the beauty of AMERICAN EQUALITY.

It started with a birther lie (Obama's mother was a US citizen BORN in Wichita, Kansas... and ANY child of a US citizen automatically becomes a US citizen), then grew from there! Maybe many black americans just don't relate to the culture behind the Star Sprangled Banner - which is about war. African Americans had everything stripped from them. EVERYTHING. How they find their voice and equilibrium in the USA is really up to them. No one should be able to say what their identity should be.
Several folks like Bill Maher is suggesting to replace the current one with this one.

Exactly. These obtuse “where is the Asian/Mexican/White national anthem” questions make no sense in context of this song and it’s history. This has been called the Black national anthem since 1919. It’s not something that just happened yesterday. Alicia Keys didn’t get bored and make this. There is historical context behind this song.
