  • There are paintings that carry within them an aura of mystery and whose symbolism is enigmatic, as the motives of the commissioning and the experience that determined the work are not known exactly.
One such case is undoubtedly Jan van Eyck's The Arnolfini Portrait, painted in 1434 and preserved in The National Gallery in London.

Good video this is unlikely to be arnolfini's, it looks like an error that's been compounded over the years. in my oppinion the most important part in the video was the detailed sketch (legal document) handed back to Johannnes to be painted after she had died by Philip the good as it was no longer needed and the threat to his position had died that being the woman..This is when the chandallier, dog and some other parts were added and the hand now facing his wife instead of the viewer. The woman was already married in 1432 in secret because it would of gone against the peace treaty of 1428.For a marriage it has to be right hand to right hand, not left hand to right hand as in the portrait.
The public ceromony was allowed in 1434 by Philip the Good and her mother under conditions that she gives up her titles/land, so they are swearing an oath in the portrait.
