That is wonderful to hear Tara! We're continuing to release more of these background videos for each book of the Bible. Keep up the study and we'll keep up the videos! ☺
Thank you Dotti. Glad that you find them helpful. Stay tuned as we continue to release more of these videos on the historical background for each book of the Bible!
@ TheBibleEffect I'm the same guy that was picking on you in regards to the video on 1 Thessalonians (the video was great regardless). This video is even more fantastic. Great work!
Thank you Sprint. We have videos like this for much of the New Testament books, and plan on covering the background for every book of the Bible. Blessings to you too!
One of the great things about knowing the historical background is that many times we can see ourselves in the original readers of the book. In those times the book comes alive and can speak to us even more. Colossians is such a great book to help us recognize the lenses we wear that may be distorting our worldview. Thank you for commenting! Blessings!
This is a great question, and I'm glad that you asked it. Alongside about 20 years of Bible teaching, we try to also consult a number of works written by reputable scholars. For this video we used the following resources: Tyndale NT Commentaries: Colossians by N. T. Wright International Standard Bible Encyclopedia "Colossians" by F. F. Bruce The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians by Albert Barnes J. B. Lightfoot on the Epistles Dictionary of Paul & Letters "Colossians" by P. T. O'brien Dictionary of Paul & Letters "Body" by L. J. Kreitzer Alongside all of this, we also consult with scholars in the area of Biblical studies and classical Roman history. I hope that helps! Blessings!
I'd like to share this video with our congregation, but I think you have too broadly described the Colossian problem as dualism. There are many or most dualists that do not impose the moral distinctions on matter and spirit described in your video. I think it is better described as infant gnosticism, which is dualistic and captures the moral overlay you describe.
Of course, as you mentioned, there is much more in the background in Colossians that we were not able to include in the video, including what appears to be the early seeds of Gnosticism that seem to be evident. There is a lot of scholar discussion on the Colossian heresy background in the book, with some diverse ideas as to the specifics of what ideas were being spread. In this video our aim was to try to encompass the main essence of the background, without venturing too far down any one particular branch, isolating the others. God bless as you take your congregation through Colossians!
I disagree with what you said in some of this. God tells us to crucify our flesh, abstain from all appearance of evil, rebuke, reprove, and exhort. We are NOT to be like the world, we are to discipline ourselves, AS PAUL SAID HE DID, and we are to not love the world, nor have a carnal mind. The bible says for us to weaken our flesh! 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God., and [24] Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me......[24] And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. [25] If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit......and NO, we can do nothing to erase our sins. ONLY JESUS's crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection is what makes us born again, a new creature in Christ. But after trusting Jesus to save us, we are told time and time again to deny ourselves.
Thank you for your comment. We fully agree with you, that we are not to seek to imitate the world around us, but we are to imitate Christ and are to crucify our fleshly desires. I am not clear as to what in the video was said that you find to be disagreeable. This video is seeking to show the background of the book of Colossians, and some of their distorted views that led to the writing of this letter. In other words, the letter of Colossians was meant to bring correction to a church who was still struggling in some of these cultural views of the past. I hope that helps. Blessings!
I have a hard time with the protestant idea that "there's nothing you can do" too predeterministic. Excuses bad behavior. I don't have a hard time with the idea that we are saved by grace.
I'd be happy to try to address the area of difficulty that you have. Can you please clarify, are you referring to the idea that "there's nothing you can do" regarding salvation? Or are you referring to the idea that (is not universal to Protestant Christians) that "there's nothing you can do" in the sense of no freewill regarding personal choice?
