In Probate, you have to itemize Inventory of all assets and belongings. You have to notify Mass Health (Department of Health and Human Services) that there is an Estate to settle. They will place a lean on your house so that they get paid first before any other creditor or beneficiaries of a will. I experienced this when a friend passed, and his mother who still lived there and his son were terrified of being homeless, even though the mortgage had been paid off for decades. They were worried they were going to have to sell the house to pay the insurance company back, for the care they provided for free because he was on disability and didn't have a livable wage, but now suddenly think they have the right to demand they pay it all back , at a time when they have even less income...
