    The watercolours should be the same dried as in the tubes. However, since they contain water and you use them directly, you may use more than is really intended. Watercolours are to be used with water and a thin coat should be applied. Ideally, you get deeper/stronger colours by layering them. This is true for pans, tubes but also for pencils. You may say, it's making more work for you but that is what it is… :-)
    Tubes are sold for artists who fill their own palettes or to refill pans. It is not meant to be queezed out for each individual painting and then discarded! That would be too wasteful. Empty palettes can be used for mixing and only squeezing out a little paint if you are planning to paint a large area, of course. For dried paint in your palette or pans, you could spray them with a mist of water before using them so that they are soften up a little. I hope this helps. :-)
    I have heard from other watercolour artists that the Arteza paints crack when they are squeezed into a palette and there are videos on YT to show you how you can avoid that because it would be too labourious for me. I would not know because I use different brands that are tried and tested. ;-)

      Thank you for this informative comment! It was a bit painful for me to watch the tube watercolors being used this way, but I think it's a common misconception, especially among watercolor beginners. When they say pan watercolors are harder to reactivate they are usually referring to specific pigments, like some cobalts colors. When you put a thick layer of watercolor straight from the tube on the paper you won't be able to layer them without activating the dried layer again. Also sometimes they can smear without even you applying water if you put your hand on that part again when painting, because such a thick layer won't be able to adhere to the paper properly

      Oh I didn't knew that! Thanks!
      But why some brands don't use the same formula in their pans and in their tubes ? I know Schmincke does and I thought that means I could put their tubes into pans but a lot of other brands don't. Isn't it weird ?

    • @soubiagatsuma833
      @soubiagatsuma833 5 лет назад +6

      @@sophielegay4104 I'm reading most actually have the same formula. Winsor and Newton is one that claims their different formula for pans makes them easier to rewet. But I know a lot of companies just pour their liquid paint into pans and let them dry. While some like Winsor and Newton extrude the pigment and cut them up into pans. That's why they have a different look in the pans, W&N ones are domed while schmincke's sunk in the middle from loosing volume while drying. I am guessing with 'different formula' they are talking about the pouring vs extruding method. I don't know a lot about extruding, but it's done under pressure, I think, and so the pigment is more compressed and harder to rework into a nice consistency. But I could be wrong about that.

    • @soubiagatsuma833
      @soubiagatsuma833 5 лет назад +4

      @@sophielegay4104 the only brand I had both pans and tubes of was W&N cotman watercolors. I let my my tubes dry, and the only difference was that some of the tubes cracked after drying for a few months without use. They rewet the same for me, some pigments really easily, others like sap green aren't as fun working with, pan and tube alike. I think most student grade watercolors crack though when dried, and you can add glycerine/honey to prevent that.
      I used them together with out a problem and I'd say as long as you like the way your tube paints perform after drying (something that depends mostly on the brand and not the tube vs pan form) you can let them dry and still reactivate them to the same pigmentation that they had while liquid.

    • @ChrissieNicely

  • @CdnDolly

    Just a heads up for anyone thinking of buying the tubes. I filled some spare half pans I had with the tube paint and let it dry completely and they don't react well to being dried out. My paint seemed to shrink A LOT, and broke into chunks and crumbs in my half pans. This is a huge problem with transporting because the chunks and crumbs visit their neighbors and you end up with mixed colors when you reactivate. I sat for awhile resorting them back to their rightful cup, but missed a few. They reactivated ok, but I haven't really used them much since, so I'm not entirly sure if the vibrancy is lower then when taken directly from the tube. (I'd assume it would be).

    Generally dried out watercolour paints shouldn't lose their pigment, but I think that's just because Arteza is more for beginners than professionals. This video is ideal for beginners to art so this demonstration does work well for them as Arteza is affordable even if a bit on the lower quality side; besides, you don't want to buy high quality artist's supplies right off the bat if you're new to art. You might not like doing art as a job so those £100 paints will become a waste of money, so why not just get the £10 set?

    • @samusai
      @samusai 5 лет назад +2

      I can agree that it is odd that they did that but found it a bit of a plus because they now have that translucent-ness that straight from the tube didn't have. I do agree Arteza is just all around good for beginners or those who want to have a step up from the student grade paints (In all honesty I do like them more than my grumbacher watercolors)

      That would be interesting. I know Flying Tiger sells a set of 10 'water soluble' crayons, although when I tried them they barely reacted to the water, even when trying to take the pigment directly from the crayon.
      Alternately, there are plenty of brands of watercolour/water soluble pens (despite that technically counting for most water-based pens that I've found, if you just test the reaction to water while the ink is still wet), but the Staedler set, and the ones from Typo seem, to me, to be better used as regular brush pens unless you want either very little pigment (Typo) or for the colour to bleed straight through because of it being so bright when you add water. On the other hand, of the few Windsor & Newton watercolour markers I've tried, the ink seemed to dissolve pretty well into water, even if not perfectly, and blended together pretty well, without showing through my sketchbook paper (if you layer the staedler ones, it just barely shows through the other side of the page, but I have yet to try layering the W&N markers, so that might be wrong, and will definitely depend on the paper you use just as much as the mediums)

    Hey Kattvalk, I LOVE your videos and always watch them 😻😻😻 i would like to offer my insight from using watercolors for years, i apologize if the advise is unwanted...
    For tube paints, they are extremely pigmented and you are correct in saying that. The advise you had received from other artists is correct that a small bit goes a long way, truly only a tiny dot from the tube will give you much closer to the results that you were looking for because of the intensely packed pigments. That is also why people generally will use these to put into an empty pallette and let dry, that allows them to use less of the pigment and have the translucency that you were also referring to while being able to build up layers, or use small amounts of fresh pigment from the tube in order to get those super deep colors again.
    Again sorry for the unsolicited advice, I hope it is more helpful than annoying lol and I think you will love using tube watercolors if you continue with them! ^-^ 💕

  • @Gantorin

    I just bought an empty pallette for my tube water colors. I find this may make it easier for me to get into them. I hope I do not lose too much natural tint too them. I did not even think of that. Meh... they are Reves, so if anythink I can just use them to get used to the medium.

    I've tried Arteza art supplies, and mostly find them more suited for secondary /high school kids. Or people starting out, who aren't too familiar with the different types of mediums out there. Great as a starter kit for the new artist, or for older hobby artists. Who paint for pleasure and not work. This is my own personal opinion. The pigments are too wishy washie and unstable for my liking, and having tested them, there light fastness isn't upto professional level. These are a cheaper student grade supplies. Which are great for a pocket which is having to watch pennies.
    Thanks Marie, great video as usual..

I use them to refill pan, create custom colour blends and just squeeze them in my watercolour tin to let them dry. Just so those unfamiliar with pan vs tube watercolor: they are basically identical, many watercolorists just use tube and use it both straight from the tube and use it after drying, even those who don’t like to use it straight will often use it to refill pans since it is often more economical. The only reason it is “more vibrant” is because you get much more pigment on your brush, you can get the same effect if you allow your dry paint to soak for a period of time. It is ALWAYS possible to reactivate watercolor. It is also a translucent medium, so while there is of course many ways of using it, one of the best ways is starting light and building up the color, if something is too light or not vibrant enough that just means you need another glaze. It also drys lighter than it goes on so even if you think the color is vibrant it may not be once dry.

    Let your tube watercolors dry in your palette and then reactivate just like you would if working from the pan. They don’t lose any vibrancy. That’s how they work.

    I may be good with pencils, but I failed miserably with watercolors. I tried THREE TIMES and failed I just gave up on that, I personally hate not having control and not being able to make details.

    Why so many blues tho?
    Faber Castell has the same problem, I bought a pencil box with 48 colors, it came with 16 (!!!!) blues.

      Nadine Bueno - Probably because you need several blues no matter what you draw.
      Landscapes? Sea and sky.
      Plants? Well, some flowers are blue.
      Animals? Eyes, uh...probably depth in fur.
      People? Eyes, clothing.
      Shadows in everything might need blue.
      It's arguably the most essential color group after, idk, greys? So that's probably why you see blue overkill a lot.

    woodless color pencils always makes me wonder if heavy handed people will wind up breaking them in half without trying to do so.

    I have not bought the watercolor pencils because I HATE how they are laid out it looks like someone threw up the pencils in the packaging and yes I’m using that as my only excuse to not buy them

    The way you used the tubes on the skin really bothered me. You should be putting the smallest amount you can and then putting water in and mix. It's much easier to get transparency.

    I love the red arteza water brushes but those blue ones are terrible in my opinion. I cant really use them with water in the barrel (their intended use) without the water pouring out or leaking. I’d recommend getting the red ones if you have a choice, or the pentel ones if you like the shape of the blue ones.
