  • Hello and welcome everyone to this comprehensive video tutorial! In today's session, we'll be focusing on leveraging the power of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) within Microsoft Access to automate tasks and manipulate data in a seamless, efficient manner.
Throughout this tutorial, we'll be working with a sample database containing a CustomerT table, which stores customer data, including their credit limits. Our primary goal is to demonstrate how to write VBA code to loop through the records in this table and double each customer's credit limit.
We'll start by guiding you through the process of creating a VBA subroutine to perform this task. Next, we'll illustrate how to add a button to a form in Microsoft Access, which will be used to execute the subroutine. We'll go step-by-step, explaining how to connect the button to the VBA code, and finally, we'll show you how to test the button to ensure that it successfully doubles the credit limits for all customers in the CustomerT table.
By the end of this tutorial, you'll have gained valuable insights into using VBA within Microsoft Access to automate tasks and enhance the functionality of your database applications. So, grab your favorite beverage, and let's dive right in!
    NOTES:
I had ChatGPT write that introduction for me as well as a list of keywords. I asked it for a title, too, and it came up with: "Mastering Microsoft Access: Automate Data Manipulation with ChatGPT-Generated VBA Code."
I didn't like that, so I said: "It's a quick tutorial. "Mastering" is a bit too grandiose. Something simpler? It came up with:
A simpler title for this tutorial could be: "Quick Access Tutorial: Enhance Your Database with ChatGPT-Generated VBA Code." Pretty good! I'll tweak it a little bit and there's the title.

I too am a big advocate for Chat GPT. I’ve not used ChatGPT for MS Access but have used it in other languages and found it did provide errors in some lines of code but when I told it about the errors, it apologised and then gave me the correct code.
Very clever, very useful and very much a game changer.

Back in the early 2000s I was writing databases for our call center. For QA calls and our call center statistics and declined appts from customers. Front end on the agents computers and back end on the server. Easy peasy. But VBA code always tripped me up. Now I'm helping a friend with his customer database and the automatic billing is what I need to brush up on for VBA - And I was looking into ChatGPT to help (and with your video too!) Will give ya an update to see how ChatGPT helps out here.

Absolutely fascinating! I asked ChatGPT to write me a game in Python, and it came back with all the code, based on some very specific criteria that I requested. It was all there. 😮

I hear it's better with Python than VBA. I've never used Python.

I am using ChatGPT for any VB and Access questions that I have. Just learning how to ask the right questions, and then trying it out is a fun learning experience. I do think that this is the future.

I recently documented some VBA code. It was nice to paste the code in ChatGPT and get a bulleted list back summarizing it. A few edits and it turned out great.

I asked Chat GPT to write a poem about Microsoft Access. Here's the first paragraph of 5.
"In the world of databases, it's hard to deny,
That Microsoft Access is a real MVP, that's not lie.
With Tables, Forms, Queries and Reports,
It's a powerful tool for data management of all sorts"

Hi Richard. I’m a complete Access noob but have over the last 6 months built a fully functioning DB using your various videos to help me (thank you). However, now that I’ve done that I’ve realised it could be built better (my table structure isn’t quite right to make it future proof). I’ve asked ChatGpt for help and it has come up with a number of suggestions which seem to make sense but I have found the more detailed questions you ask and the longer the chat is, it tends to begin to contradict itself and I went round in a huge circle. It is really impressive but you need to know how and what to ask to get a decent response. I’ll go back to your vids and courses for now to figure out my problem 😊

When I tried to use it, I received a message that said they were at capacity and to leave my email to get on the waiting list. I have not heard back after a couple of months. Someday, if I am ever bored, I will revisit the sight and give it another shot. It’s possible they were directed to junk mail. Thanks for the preview though. ✌🏻

I have been using ChatGPT lately to help write code I can't figure out on my own. I've noticed that although ChatGPT can write syntactically correct code (most of the time), it is often not the most efficient code, as evidenced by its predilection for nested IF statements.

I did the same with some Python code, and what I found interesting if you don't like the code generated you can ask it to try again and it'll present it using a different method.

Hi Richard, just wondering if I could use chat, GTP to dip into customer history and write a reply like: “Hi John,
Just following up on your Intel 10700 computer purchase back in July 2019, wondering how things are working for you and if there’s any upgrades you are considering…” type thing? So looking for chat to make sense of the customer history? of course I could use SU groups and figure out what to type and if it’s a laptop, mention that, etc. but curious about this. Trying to beef up my (weak!) CRM module. 😊

I've used it to generate some VBA code, it usually works very well. When the code generates an error, I paste in that information and it gives some suggested fixes. Sometimes, it apologizes for making a mistake.

Yes eventually this will lower the value of programming. However, you still have to know how to putthe pices together for a full solution ie. Problem solving.

Yeah, I've been working with ChatGPT now for a while and have been having it write code for me, mostly to do mundane things that I know how to do already, but I just don't feel like taking the time to properly format the code. It's good at that. What it's not good at yet is coming up with the concepts behind programming itself. So, you, the programmer, still have to understand what's going on and where you want the program to go. But once you understand that, you can direct ChatGPT to write code based on your specifications. I'm not saying it's not going to get there eventually; it will. But as of right now, programmers are still safe.
