Wingspan is a competitive, medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game from Stonemaier Games. It's designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and features over 170 birds illustrated by Natalia Rojas and Ana Maria Martinez.
You are bird enthusiasts-researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors-seeking to discover and attract the best birds to your network of wildlife preserves. Each bird extends a chain of powerful combinations in one of your habitats (actions). These habitats focus on several key aspects of growth:
Gain food tokens via custom dice in a birdfeeder dice tower
Lay eggs using egg miniatures in a variety of colors
Draw from hundreds of unique bird cards and play them
The winner is the player with the most points after 4 rounds.

The digital version of the game does let you pick you bonus cards before your birds and resources, at least on switch, you just have to navigate there yourself

Yup. Same thing on PC. Just click the bonus card tab instead of the bird card tab.

You made a mistake at 31:07. You chose the large bird specialist instead of the ecologist. You lost out on 2 free points at the end (you got the 6 points from large bird specialist instead of the 8 from ecologist)

114 today with 4 bots :) it depends so much on the first 5 birds
when we play the boardgame with the family we have a special rule for the social-birds (that give food or cards to everyone) the player who activates it gets double. as some other social-birds do with everyone gets a card and you get two. makes more sense to play those kind of birds with our extra^^

Thats a really neat house rule! Thanks for sharing!

I just scored 133 points in a 2pl game. Both expansions were used. Took me 95 games, I don't think I'll ever beat this one :o

Congratulations! Nicely done. You'll definitely beat it! We're posting our 130 challenge this week. You'll have to see if you can beat us to 140.

You can tab back and forth between initial birds and goals, so you don't have to pick blind!

Good point sometimes the food strategy is a good one to follow. Do you find there's a winning formula you like to follow in your games?

Congratulations on getting 120! I really appreciate the viedo and it;s nice seeing how other people play wingspan.
That being said this is a really weird showcase especially for new players. I'm honestly surprised because I definitely thought there was some missplays in this game, some of them pretty jarring. But they mainly came from not paying attention to the bird tray as you missed some really good cards in there. This is especially true since you already had a raven and were not tied to birdfeeeder rolls so could basically choose to get food whenever.
On top of not playing some definitely worth playing birds, some of the birds played were definitely not worth playing. Mockingbird and Horned Lark in particular both set you back more than anything. In fact not playing the Mockingbird at all would've nailed you a higher score.
I also find missleading that you math the points you made without substracting the egg points. Playing a 2 point bird and losing 2 eggs is not a 2 point turn and maybe that's why some of the birds were overvalued?
Throughout the video there is no mention of round end which could all have been done fairly easily, and honestly despite the points, minimal mentions of bonus cards or much attempt to go out of your way and do them (for instance cartographer only requires 4 birds and that's probably how many you missed from the bird tray, two of which were the Atlantic puffin and the Northern Bobwhite which were extremely good in this game). Which is peculiar because you have a resources making setup, not a point making setup, and bonus cards is the main way to convert resources into points.
I understand that this is a good roadmap for how to setup your board and whatnot, and that misstakes happen. So thank you for this video I really appreciate it. But at the same type I think this game could've been a 150 game an most of the errors come from just not paying attention, not really mathing out your turns and a bit of tunnel vision on your own board.
A good game nonetheless, I hate to be too negative and you provide some really valuable wingspan content, but this game is definitely worth reviewing.
I don't know if I understood exactly what you said at 2:20 but on steam you are in fact able to look at the bonus cards before/while picking your cards and you can go back and forth between cards, bonus cards and food as much as you want.
Also what is the steam leader-board you mentioned?

I feel like much of the mistakes could be fixed by occasionally switching to the board view. There's also a convenient way to check round gaol progress on the upper right without checking everyone's board (thought this is also worth doing).

Thank you for such a thorough breakdown. We're working our way up to 150, but as you point out, and as we noticed after the game, there were definitely some missed opportunities. It really helps to have precise advice from someone who really knows the game. Champ of the week is a challenge that's built into the digital game. Everyone gets the same draws and you can replay it to master the best path. That's definitely a challenge we want to win when we get a little more time.

@@LegendaryTactics Hi, I'm glad and also impressed by how positively you reply to criticism. I honestly re-wrote this comment a few times and removed some parts as I really didn't want to sound aggressive, derogatory or unthankful.
Your content is honestly far better than what I've seen around the web regarding wingspan strategic discussion and I only wish to see it grow, both in reach and in quality, so I truly comment with the best of intentions.
So thank you for responding to my comment this way, I truly appreciate it.
      Best of luck for 140+

@@motherlove8366 We really do value honest and fair criticisms. It's how we grow and improve. As long as people aren't cussing at us, we're happy to evolve. It was clear that you had really valid ideas, and as you probably saw with the 130 challenge, we took them and applied them to that video.
So definitely, keep them coming! It was actually really encouraging to hear that you thought we could hit 150 in that game so we can keep trying to get there. Hopefully someone else out there is trying for the same benchmarks and maybe they'll pick up a useful tip from watching.
