@@m.ivyluna4632 how do we find out more information about a prosthetic for a thumb? My husband lost his thumb and index finger on his left hand in a saw accident.
if they make it attached via nerves, i don't think you will be able to even move it for a while because i don't think the brain will just suddenly learn/accept the new digit immediately. after that it will just become natural and soon you'll be fluently playing guitar or even piano with that extra thumb and be able to play slightly more complicated pieces.

HighestRailway, Technically you have one, or you can't count your fingers, Pinky + Ring finger = 2, Thumb + Index Finger = 2, so who's left between those 4. The middle one... It isn't the middle compared to our hands, but compared to the fingers it's the middle one... like if you take your fingers off and place them in the right order side by side, tell wich one is the middle one..
Zenios I hate this argument. Of course the thumb is a finger. Why would it not be? What makes it so special to have it's own classification? A silly saddle joint? Pfff. still a finger.
So if it's controlled by your toes, does that mean you can't control the thumb while you walk/run? Like, could I walk across the room with four wine glasses in one hand? All of the examples in the video had people standing still/sitting down.
id say it is a bit of a crutch of a controlling mechanism and is to be revised and redone in the future consider it a proof of concept, not a finished product
Several professional prosthetic designers have already gotten away from this form of interface and are perfecting some that interface directly with the brain, both wired and wireless. This is basically the level of a high school science fair compared to the level that is already in use. This is probably less of a viable product as it is a proof-of-concept for someone's resume.
The issue here is that there is no easy way to grab the motion information for an imaginary digit from the brain by sensing the right motor neurons, which is what regular prosthetic systems would do.
Our brains actually do not rely on thinking about how to make a appendage move, but what we intend for an appendage to accomplish, at least one prosthetic design company, using low profile electroencephalography has created an interface to operate whole arm replacements, with individual finger articulation, as well as wrist, elbow and shoulder, without the need to map neuropathways to former muscle groups. The portion of the brain that controls motor function is extremely adaptable as well, to the point of allowing other portions of the brain to learn to operate body parts that were once controlled by damaged or missing brain tissues. There really is no reason under those conditions that the brain would not be able to learn to operate a 6th digit on either or both hands seamlessly, just as easily as the users of this device learned to control it with their feet. My objection to the "technology" displayed in this video, is that it essentially impairs the user rather than empowers them, and has insufficient functionality to justify the loss, just as the older style hand replacements used the bicep muscle to provide force and control to grip, at the loss of full bicep function. The current goal of every designer of prosthetic should be to restore or enhance function without losses, so designing a device that gives a minor increase in functionality at the major loss of other functionality is working backwards, technologically speaking.
Stephen hawking’s wheelchair was controlled by his eyes (trough glasses) and it was basically his whole body, and also he still could do other things while controlling his wheelchair. And this is only thumb (or two, if you like) it may be simplier to control these thumbs with the same technology. Also there could be way to make this technology more compact (like lenses). It would be expensive, but it is closest thing to brain controlled version (brain controlled version would be way more expensive).
I feel like you can't fully understand it unless you try it and I'm so there to try it!! This is so interesting. And definitely opens up a whole world of possibilities. What's it like having a third arm? 😄
Without it linking directly into the brain though it has extremely limited use. Toes are nowhere near as dextrous as fingers, and there's no way you could pilot a whole arm with any kind of precision with your toes.
It's essentially a foot pedal. Are foot pedals banned in e-sports? Probably. I always thought some foot switches would be beneficial to playing games. More buttons, and independent of the hands.
Itz Johanna the strap is not connected to any part of the thumb and the controller is at the feet. If you had not thumbs, you still could use it. It would just be your "second thumb."
I like ideas that expand our ideas of what is possible. Don't know why so many would dislike this video. That's the divide of how people think at work.
Exactly. I want a study that looks at how the brain reacts to controlling a limb it was not designed to handle. I believe the brain is flexible enough to handle it, but I want in-depth analysis. Soon, with this kind of outside thinking, we could have things like a brain-controlled hang glider (even powered versions). Not to mention the normal sci-fi extra limbs and things like that people would normally think about. Now, I'm a bit biased with my dream for flight, but a big drawback of wingsuits is the lack of real pitch control, making it impossible to land gently (like a bird). But in the future, things like prosthetic wings could actually be a reality, since brain controls are much faster and complex than a normal pilot would be able to handle. So we could have real, personal flight. But that's just scratching the surface of what could be possible in the near future. Perhaps it still won't be *affordable* per se, but just thinking about it gets me excited.
Its still a prototype for a reason, doubtlessly they know that the completed product needs to be "walkable" . Maybe they will add some toe combination to signal if your walking or not, or put a computer in the machine to filter out walk cycle pressure.
That's why she said she's going to work with some neuro scientists. Maybe hardwiring the thumb directly into the human nervous system could provide some interesting designs. Then again the human mind does not naturally have the knowledge to move the third thumb so it would take some trial and error
Honestly I find this extraordinarily fascinating. One thing we tend to forget is that prosthetics don't need to be full blown exo-skeletons or replacements for lost limbs or body parts, they can be something so small as an extra thumb. It brings me back to Ghost in the Shell and the ability to split your fingers into multiple connected smaller limbs to increase productivity. There's also stuff like Chell's Boots from Portal, which is essentially used as an excuse to survive fall damage, but the idea of having prosthetics that can be attached to your legs that allow you to survive falls from great heights are a very similar concept. I honestly think this is a lot more genius than most "meme-worthy" responses this has gotten.
" Somehow we've transformed it into this idea", maybe people got this idea from the actual main use of prothesis, that is fixing or replacing. Prosthetics as a upgrade of the body are a new thing and most people haven't seen someone with one oh these prosthetics
I know, right? She makes it sound as if everyone is stupid for thinking that but it's just that her idea is new, not that we've all been thinking about it wrong the whole time!
I think she meant it this way: Take an example of someone missing a leg. By adding a prosthetic, it's better not to think of it as replacing the leg, but rather extending the capabilities of the person with only 1 leg. It's not the same leg and it operates differently, so it requires remapping of motor skills. Might as well think of it as a new feature altogether. This second thumb is to demonstrate this philosophy -- if having a prosthetic is like learning a new capability, then even people who are not missing parts can use them.
I imagine these could be quite helpful for people with thumb hypoplasia. Not only in the physical sense, but as a confidence builder as well. Very interesting stuff
Sure, but that can be fixed. Of course she didn't wire someone's brain to the prosthetic, way too much effort and complexity and can't just give it to people to try out. If we advance in prosthetics to have limbs be neurally wired like natural limbs, we can make this thumb obey as well, probably.
I'd be careful if I were these scientists. First, it's an extra thumb. Next, it's 4 extra limbs.
And finally, *Doctor Octopus*
It will happen in the future. So, will the Bat-suit and Iron-armor. There's no denying that.
Hell yeah!
Then they add lasers to the tentacles, and its Doctor Octagonapus.

It would be wireless, but no-one would do it because they would have to cut open your skull to operate on your brain, you could die.
Wait for 2060, i think we all will be augmented by that date :D
Spartan War118 I mean, I think we have but it's just a question of whether we should at this point in time...
So u technically won’t have a middle finger any more
Woah thnx for to likes
@JadenIsKool _oh_
Technically you dont have one at all
HighestRailway, Technically you have one, or you can't count your fingers, Pinky + Ring finger = 2, Thumb + Index Finger = 2, so who's left between those 4. The middle one... It isn't the middle compared to our hands, but compared to the fingers it's the middle one... like if you take your fingers off and place them in the right order side by side, tell wich one is the middle one..
ThaRand0mPlayer They meant it as in the thumb technically isn't a finger
Zenios I hate this argument. Of course the thumb is a finger. Why would it not be? What makes it so special to have it's own classification? A silly saddle joint? Pfff. still a finger.
So if it's controlled by your toes, does that mean you can't control the thumb while you walk/run? Like, could I walk across the room with four wine glasses in one hand? All of the examples in the video had people standing still/sitting down.
id say it is a bit of a crutch of a controlling mechanism and is to be revised and redone in the future
consider it a proof of concept, not a finished product
*Awesome ! Now give me a high Six*
how long til i can become Goro from mortal kombat...
same
that would be scary lol
Stephen hawking’s wheelchair was controlled by his eyes (trough glasses) and it was basically his whole body, and also he still could do other things while controlling his wheelchair. And this is only thumb (or two, if you like) it may be simplier to control these thumbs with the same technology. Also there could be way to make this technology more compact (like lenses). It would be expensive, but it is closest thing to brain controlled version (brain controlled version would be way more expensive).
I give the inventor of this a thumbs up
JVCD but what is a thumbs up anymore?
Three thumbs up now, thanks to this lady.
Need one for each hand!!!!
0:49 *DELIGHTED LAUGHTER*
That laugh is like nails on a chalk board. Sounds fake and forced also.
Earthling lol stfu
I feel like you can't fully understand it unless you try it and I'm so there to try it!! This is so interesting. And definitely opens up a whole world of possibilities. What's it like having a third arm? 😄
Jera Sky I need two more arms tbh
Crimson Typhoon.
Without it linking directly into the brain though it has extremely limited use. Toes are nowhere near as dextrous as fingers, and there's no way you could pilot a whole arm with any kind of precision with your toes.

Hello there!
Now you can begin to keep a journal
wat bout third weener
AlphaOmega might wanna get urself checked lol
So you have a double barrel?
Veloci raptor double the barrel, double the load
I don't think your current condition of even having 2 weiners is normal.
just turn into an echidna
But the middle finger will cease to be!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Already banned in all Esports
Ranger Furby Would this seriously give you any edge?
Hey, anything counts in Esports.
Kenan Šabić A massive edge especially for those using a keyboard
Ranger Furby lmao
It's essentially a foot pedal. Are foot pedals banned in e-sports? Probably.
I always thought some foot switches would be beneficial to playing games. More buttons, and independent of the hands.
the doctor octopus age is close I can feel it
With neuralink we are that much closer
I love how simple it seems. Would love to try it out myself.
That's helpful for people who don't have thumbs
Itz Johanna, but troublesome for those who don't have feet.
Itz Johanna the strap is not connected to any part of the thumb and the controller is at the feet. If you had not thumbs, you still could use it. It would just be your "second thumb."
No doy
I love INSIDER to the moon

I like ideas that expand our ideas of what is possible. Don't know why so many would dislike this video. That's the divide of how people think at work.
Just waiting for a brain-controlled version.
It is brain controlled, though?
I think he/she meant directly controlled by the brain.
Did we watch the same video? 1:25
Its muscle controlled
This hurts my brain to look at 😱 ahhhhh
Cody Whitlock
yeah, 5 fingers are cute...but 6 is a useful number
Yeah its so unsatisfying
Not beacuse its 6
Theres something about it i really really hate and i think that will make my brain explode
iki hiyori Maybe it's because it doesn't look like a normal finger. That's the case for me, at least.
What if you walk with it? All the toes move so...
yeah...maybe a future concept, but this exact one seems pretty silly
Its still a prototype for a reason, doubtlessly they know that the completed product needs to be "walkable" . Maybe they will add some toe combination to signal if your walking or not, or put a computer in the machine to filter out walk cycle pressure.
You prolly have to temporarily stop it while walking...
That's why she said she's going to work with some neuro scientists. Maybe hardwiring the thumb directly into the human nervous system could provide some interesting designs.
Then again the human mind does not naturally have the knowledge to move the third thumb so it would take some trial and error
@@Vishydeenu Hand... pick up... the ball!
Can we please get it between my thumb and forefinger because it is so much space between them!
apple :- i thumb, "we made something, never made before"
samsung :- thumb galaxy, "rethink what your hands can do"
Really cool. I hope they make this easily accessible for those that need it.
Jennifer A
Who actually needs a second thumb?
Who needs that??
The first thing I think: more video game hotkeys for my csgo and so on
lol me too
Honestly I find this extraordinarily fascinating.
I'd prefer two of these, so I have four thumbs. I'm into the bilateral symmetry.
The Six Fingered Man! You killed my father; prepare to d... Wait he also has six fingers. And him, and them over there...
Kameron Pierce My name is Enigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to- oh wait that thumb’s fake sorry wrong person
But... That's just wasting your little finger...
It was already a waste. THUMB SUPERIORITY

Stuart Morrow I was about to desagree, but thanks for reminding me of Lindy's point...
Ethan Dembitz no. You lose your pinky you lose 50 percent of your strength.
PINKIES FOR LIFE MAN
pinkies are not a waste, they serve purpose of crouching and sprinting.
Stop at 1:32
Six fingers, im imagine Ford from Gravity falls now. Lol
RUclips Tan same
Hiya. It would be awesome for cosplays
Same xdxd
Don't you know, 6 fingers is more dominant then 5 fingers? :V
MVK - San But sometimes the gene is silenced. Double anomaly
This is mind blowing !
No. What's mind blowing is getting shot in the face
This thumb is awesome great for people who need a thumb
that made me chuckle :3
I don't understand. It says a 3rd thumb, but we only have one and one thumb being added.1+1=2
FreezeFrame look at your hands and count how many thumbs there are.
People: *Using this amazing device to get tasks done*
Me: *Uses it to give a thumbs down without turning my hand*
" Somehow we've transformed it into this idea", maybe people got this idea from the actual main use of prothesis, that is fixing or replacing. Prosthetics as a upgrade of the body are a new thing and most people haven't seen someone with one oh these prosthetics
Eros *IDEIA*
Carlos244 Portuguese keyboard hahaha
I know, right? She makes it sound as if everyone is stupid for thinking that but it's just that her idea is new, not that we've all been thinking about it wrong the whole time!
*of**
I think she meant it this way: Take an example of someone missing a leg.
Can I have it

flameshana9 I prefer people-kind because human kind has man in the word and it feels like it's assuming my gender.
I imagine these could be quite helpful for people with thumb hypoplasia.
Not only in the physical sense, but as a confidence builder as well. Very interesting stuff
super cool unitlllll you gotta move your toes to use it. i'm out
Sure, but that can be fixed. Of course she didn't wire someone's brain to the prosthetic, way too much effort and complexity and can't just give it to people to try out. If we advance in prosthetics to have limbs be neurally wired like natural limbs, we can make this thumb obey as well, probably.
What if you don't have toes or missing them
Your toes too busy there, Mr. Busy-Toes?
Whats so bad about moving ur toes :0
It's essentially the same as driving a car. With practice it becomes automatic
