It sounds like Warner was trying to be a Little Crosby but he could not make that transition. His remark they were only concerns with ratings reflects a virgin business mentality when of course ratings were and still is the oxygen that kept'/keeps ANY show alive/ . Warner was not going to win fights when he was fighting with everyone. Creating allies is more beneficial. Hearing Eddie's remark most of the writers were white men was the same as adding a can of water to a can soup. It is amazing the show lasted that long given that element. I think such a narrative would work today with the right people and actors in place without using the stereotypical 'expectations. .

Starting out as an actor, I was hired to be a “stand-in” on the show for the last two seasons. It was like a well paying acting class for me. Watching Malcolm Direct and many times “grab the bull by the horns to smooth things out gave me the utmost respect and adoration for the young brother. Being one to “know your place” I kept out of business that was not mine…. But I heard things. Malcolm and I shared some heartfelt talks on stage. I had a crush on his Mom, Pam. One thing I recognized is that Malcom came from “good stock”. Those who know what I’m saying will understand. I loved how Eddie treated me as a team player. The times I did act on the show he would constantly praise me. One day when Malcom was directing an episode and request I rehearse the scenes for him, after rehearsing the scenes, Eddie pulled me to the side and said, “you’re one talented nigga, and I don’t lie about s#!+ like that! When this is all over go out and make a name for yourself the world wants you too”! We hugged like long lost brothers and I shed a few tears of joy.
In my opinion, they were both geniuses in their own world. They just needed to find that missing piece to allow both crowns to elevate from their characters at the same time on and off screen. Watching Mal & Ed work their magic together (when it happened) was brilliant to see. And the potential was there to last 10 plus seasons. Sad that it didn’t. .

UploadVidz The themes were on point. Also, the characters and premise was there; two black men being successful entrepreneurs, both of those things were great. But, sometimes the show did resort to lowbrow humor and the writers didn't know how to write young black men as human beings. The writers should've been writing they would showcase their sensibilities and attributes.

I’m surprised the show lasted for 4 seasons when it was clearly a challenge to produce. The egos of Malcolm and Eddie were definitely going to clash sooner or later. It was inevitable. But I have to agree with Malcolm as far as not using stereotypical humor to win over viewers. No one wants to see that because it was already rampant on UPN at that time. Malcolm wanted to bring his wisdom and experience from the “Cosby Show” to UPN but writers and producers preferred the predictable humor we’ve all grown completely tired of. There were just too many visions for the direction of this show which is why it failed.

  • @PrydeWater901

Malcolm didn’t really have a background in comedy at all. He wanted to write and direct on a sitcom just because he acted on one for years?! He didn’t even make it to Hillman even though his dad helped build it! Eddie had an actual resumé that could top some of today’s renowned comics. Voodoo Child was dope in its day!
Honestly, neither one can carry a tv show on their own, but I would choose Griffin in a comedy pickup game.

I could understand your point of view if he/they weren't the star of the entire thing. It's like if I'm a race car driver for your brand: Yes, I'm working for your brand but I'M the one who has to drive the car and deal with the consequences if things aren't feeling right on the track. You can't hire someone to be the face of your brand/product and say "just shut up and dance like we tell you!". Like it or not, they have leverage by virtue of being the main draw for the audience.

Great point in saying you got the school of Cosby joining with the school of Richard Pryor. This reminds me of my work environment as i have a coworker who is also a friend but we come from two backgrounds. His is the street and mine is the suburbs. I get where Malcom is coming from, but he is forgetting Bill Cosby wasn't always doing the Cosby Show. He did some movies that didn't represent black people in the best light. So some times you have to take roles that you aren't a huge fan of to get to do what you want to do. Only example I can think of Chris Reeve did NOT want to do Superman III, however the studio financed that horrible Noises Off for him.
