- It was a bona fide thrill to play the 1953 D-18 formerly owned by Kurt Cobain (and Elliott Smith) on a recent trip to the C.F. Martin factory. That '53 is a great-sounding guitar, and a reminder that a D-18 has no tonal limitations (we're as guilty as anyone as thinking of them only as "bluegrass" or "flat picking" guitars). The woodiness, warmth, clarity, and punch imparted by a great D-18 are the elements of what we all think of when we think, "that's how an acoustic guitar is supposed to sound!"
We're paying tribute to Nirvana in this video, with a cover of their song, "All Apologies." Everyone on staff at TME is a diehard Nirvana fan; and the lyrical melody of "All Apologies" lays out beautifully on an acoustic guitar. The guitars featured in this video represent Martin's current best D-18 offerings: Andy (on the left) is playing a D-18 Authentic 1937 VTS AGED, and Andrew (on the right) is playing a Martin Custom Shop D-18 1937 (in Aged Ambertone finish).
