Stuart, and everyone else...the blade is definitely stainless! Ha, I read it right there on the blade at the beginning of the video. Nice little RUclips blooper for you all!
I have one, Carbon steel, which I got in 1961. It was lost for years and I found it while packiing to move in 2019. It was flattened out a bit and the lanyard bail was smashed up but I straightened as much as possible. I also had to bang the pins down and it is rigid and tight. The carbon takes and holds a wicked edge. thanks for the great vid
A swell knife. I got mine in an Army/Navy store in Brooklyn in 1968. I carried it while tooling around the city and in both neighborhoods I lived in, Bush Terminal and Bay Ridge. It went everywhere with me. Cost me $7. Into the mid 1970's I was on an "overalls" clothing kick. Practical attire for NYC and the Mercator fit great in the ruler leg pocket of my overalls, real handy. Left the city in '88 and still own this knife. Don't carry it much anymore and the finish is gone. Served me well over the years, got me outta some scrapes. Ideal for subway carry (if necessary). Had mine over fifty years. Nice video of a boss knife. My favorite lock blade, fuhgeddaboudit.
Love these knives! Nice and slim and carry very easily! The take a great edge and are pretty slicey! Thanks for your thoughts on it! Stuart is a great guy!!
Hey JB, thanks! It's a very cool knife. And yes, Stuart aka The Most Interesting Man in the World, aka the Dos Equis guy, aka The Hammer, is a great guy indeed! He needs a RUclips channel, you agree!?
Thanks Profesor 👍 Do you have contacts in the US to help you get your knives? Let me know if I can help, but I’m assuming it’s more cost effective for you to get knives from the US rather than Canada? Have a good one buddy 👍🤙
I just got one, but the lock is VERY hard to press. Is that normal.I push so hard, the knife twisted in my hand without the lock even depressing, and it sliced my thumb. I almost did that two more times, well I did, just didn’t slice my hand. I think I may have to return it. The lock isn’t quite straight either, one side rubs a bit. I think I got a bad one. Yes, that wiggle with the lock stick, mine turned sideways and sliced my thumb. I never expected it to be so hard to close and my left hand was in position to close blade, like it always is. I put a little oil on it but it’s pretty sticky still. I don’t like it because of that. Going to get rid of it, or I will slice my hand again.
How come the backlock is, where it meets the blade, so high on some Mercators, and some are not. Mine is equal to the blade. Which I think gives better ergonomics. But why is this you think? Bad quality control? Or different backlocks for different countries? 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks James! I wish I had more details for you..but I think a ball peen hammer to tighten the pivot pin maybe a dremel tool to reduce the kick?? Thanks for watching! 🤙👍
Thanks for the video! Does the blade (close to the tip) hit the plastic spacer in the handle when you close the knife? (Mine does since the kick actually is too low). On yours however the front part of the lockback lever apparently does not go all the way into the notch in the blade , it should be flush with the handle exactly like in closed position of the knife. So l think there are issues with quality consistency, but it is ok for the price l guess. Enjoy the knife, it is a piece of history indeed!
My pleasure buddy! No, the blade doesn’t hit the spacer on this one 👍 It’s an interesting knife, I really like it. And I’m looking forward to learning more about the history behind this knife. It’s incredible how long they’ve been around! Thanks for watching! 👍🤙

Thanks for this great comment Marty! That’s really cool 👍🤙
@@theedcden5515- thanks. Mine lacks the belt clip on so many knives today but the Mercator blade can keep an edge. Ain't no doubt about it.
Ya and pocket clips can be hit or miss. Wouldn’t want to mess with the sleek profile of the Mercator 👍🤙
My everday carry for last 42 years.....Timless Fine Cutlery...
Top Video big cheer from Down Under
42 years, that’s impressive! Thanks very much for watching Mark 👍🤙

Simple, elegant, and does the job. Thank you.
A simple sleek edc option. Great looking knife and a great review 👍

Thanks so much Robert! Definitely many similarities to the Douk Douk - good eye! Have a good one buddy 👍🤙
Nice knife ! 👌🏻
That Mercator is Sharp Brother, and I mean that both ways, nice looking, and cutting ability :) Just a great practical knife!

Unfortunately, that is a fairly common issue with these knives. Mine does that also but maybe not as bad as yours. I hope you find a good one! 👍🤙
Sudb hi from sudbury great videos love my grohmann knives
Sudbury - cool! Thanks for watching my friend. Glad you enjoyed the videos 👍🤙

Hey yes I’m thinking it’s a quality control issue unfortunately
Why did he put the dull fiber hook (sharpening choil) above the ricasso instead of on the ricasso? Took out that much more usable edge....
Great review! Anyone know where you can learn a bit more about the fine tuning that was done on it? What tools etc. Thanks!
Thanks James! I wish I had more details for you..but I think a ball peen hammer to tighten the pivot pin maybe a dremel tool to reduce the kick?? Thanks for watching! 🤙👍
Maybe the "stainless" on the blade means something?
lol yup. Caught that afterwards. 👍🤙
Thanks for the video!
