  • Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez opens up about his parents’ divorce and extreme loneliness when living with his father, but finding meaning in boxing and following in his older brother Rigo’s footsteps. Plus, Canelo’s trainer Chepo Reynoso shares stories of the boxing champ’s rapid ascension through the amatuer circuit, including knocking out a fighter twice his age and being so dominant that all other amateur fighters were afraid to step into the ring. Chepo shares that the moment he told a 15-year-old Canelo he was turning pro remains one of his fondest memories today.

He worked and lived in the next town over about 2 hours away and would only come see me to drop off money. I spent a lot of days and nights angry and sad. I moved back to Los Angeles at 16 and was placed into foster care shortly after. I'm 22 now and aged out of foster care last year, doing well.

The language barrior, it's not easy for someone to reach mainstream success without speaking English. It's not complaint or anything, it's just natural. Japanese speakers don't become famous in Mexico. It's easier for people to connect with people they can understand, subtitles are great but it's not the same level of connection understanding the tone and subtleties.
That said, he has still done a great job becoming a success even in the US despite the language barrier.

I completely agree with you, one main factor is is the Mexican culture. If you ever get a chance, look into any Canelo interview in Spanish (I would recommend ESPN Interview: David Faitelson & Canelo Álvarez). Our culture is full of toxicity, starting from education in toddlers. Our “Analysts & Commentators in Mexico” will make any news up just to bring in money to the table. They don’t care if put in jeopardy somebody’s career.
