  • Performance and Traditions: A Conversation with contemporary artist Rashida Bumbray and Valerie Cassel Oliver. During this session, Bumbray and Oliver explored the strategies in which traditions are preserved through contemporary performance.
    Rashida Bumbray is a choreographer, curator, and the former director of Open Society Foundations’ Culture & Art Program. Throughout her career, she has encouraged artists to make work on their own terms and to take risks, and she has lifted up the authorship and agency of contemporary artists of color.
    Valerie Cassel Oliver, VMFA's Sydney and Frances Lewis Family Curator of Modern Contemporary Art and curator for Dawoud Bey: Elegy, is considered one of America's leading scholars of modern art. With a particular focus on representation, inclusivity, and the highlighting of artists of different social and cultural backgrounds.
