"hands" is the most personal song from my new album, Modern Happiness, which I wrote as a tribute to my dad who is living with myotonic muscular dystrophy, or DM. DM is a disease that has affected my dad and my family for over 35 years, but was never something we really talked about. “hands” is a song about being seen and heard as a disabled person.
I teamed up with the Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation to create this video as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the disease and how we can get together to fight it.

Hi it's nice to see someone out there giving a voice to those with Myotonic Dystrophy. It's in my niece's family. Her mom has the slight case and her daughter (my niece) noticed it in her teens and 20's and her son was born with it.
I like you my brother. Beautiful heart and beautiful voice. Ive retired my bass guitar but im still rockin and rollin baby! Cheers Eric
Even though I don’t have any condition that affects my muscles, I do have Asperger’s and ADHD. I still feel a sort of connection to this song in a weird way.
Even though we with disabilities might be “below average” in some things, we will still make it out there. We’ll continue using our hands, feet or even just brains to live our lives to the fullest, no matter how difficult it might be.
I wish I could give this a thousand Likes. This is a great tribute to your parents...as are you, Eric.
Fantastic song! Thank you. It resonates with many of us in this community.
I read the story you wrote about this last night and found it so touching. I've been a huge fan for a long time including being at the Almost Solo in NYC show, but I never realized the tremendous adversity your family has faced for decades. I lost my dad at 14 and my sister to suicide when I was 17. Additionally I've struggled with depression, anxiety, and autoimmune issues for many years, so I can definitely relate to the toll that physical disability, mental illness, and family struggles can take on a person. I greatly admire the resiliency you, and especially your parents, have shown through all of this. I'm so grateful to hear that you are healthy and that your wonderful music continues to bring joy to me and countless others!!! Stay strong Eric and much love to you ❤💛💙
This really spoke to me. I have recently been diagnosed with myotonic dystrophy. I teach guitar and bass and can still perform, but subtle hand weakness is starting to show. Thank you for inspiring me to continue.
How are you health after 4 years?
Hey, how are you doing now
This song really touches my heart because my family also suffered from dm. my mother is sick with dm2 and my grandfather died from dm2 and I carry the gene that causes this disease. And I can understand what these people are going through.
This is very lovely. God bless your father
This is a beautiful song with a great purpose. Thank you for this music and visual representation.
