  • Adam Bandt sits down for a one-on-one interview with Ruby Jones.
This election, issues the Greens have championed for years, like an integrity commission and reducing emissions, are now finding a lot of popular support.
But the party finds itself at a crossroads. It’s been unable to increase the number of lower house MPs and senators it has at the federal level for over a decade.
Adam Bandt, the party’s leader, has ambitions to change this.
So, in his first federal election as leader, how has he shaped the party, is this a different kind of Greens campaign and would he really be able to work with a Labor party that views the Greens as toxic electorally?

I have voted for the Greens for close to three decades. Adam is very impressive. I can see now more clearly how and why he managed to become the federal member for the seat of Melbourne. It is a delight to see the Australian public sitting up and starting to take a lot more notice of the Greens.
I have been more than a voter: I spent a fair fraction of my life actively helping as best I could manage. Good on you, Adam. And thank you Schwartz media of whom I am an enthusiastic supporter and subscriber.

At Murdoch University Adam had a hammer and sickle T Shirt that proclaimed.
    “This isn’t a fashion statement
    I’m a communist.”

The Green new deal would include building public transport infrastructure such as Cross River Rail in Brisbane - transport is about 17 per cent of emissions. I recently saw a post by our Labor transport minister in Queensland with a question, asking for feedback about a new initiative allowing people to take bicycles on trains all day (they had previously been restricted to outside of peak hours). I then noticed the local Greens councillor commenting in a very sneering fashion on this post, kind of questioning the sincerity of the Minister who seems very keen to support improvements for cyclists. I was very puzzled, but not for the first time. This councillor has built a reputation for being pro cycling and active transport, but why was he not supportive of the Labor transport minister making travel easier for cyclists? It sucks to be wasting energy on spats over nothing when the person they are criticising is trying hard to do what they SAY they support. Groan. Why also do the local Greens take every opportunity to run down the new Cross River Rail stations? Jobs in building rail, manufacturing trains etc are the kind of things that are indicated in the original book 'The Green New Deal' by Jeremy Rifkin - the first chapter of which is titled 'It's the infrastructure stupid'. I hope the newly elected Greens will not indulge in such trivial sniping if they wish to play a role in the new parliament, then please demonstrate a bit of fair play. We need everyone to work together on these issues.

it's interesting ... he could announce an invasion of Southern Poland, and in this format I would still find it intolerably boring...

Solar and wind is more affordable than nuclear (and in AUS we have no shortage of wind or sun)
