That comment goes along with the same belief shared by others from the old days that the fans weren't interested in seeing out-takes, behind the scenes, etc. But later Hollywood realized people were interested in seeing this type of stuff.
@@digitalmagicAR So totally confusing. Even as a child, I was obsessed with behind the scenes footage, outtakes, bloopers and ANYTHING I could find on our antenna to see anything of this type for the shows I was so into. "same belief shared by others" you say. As if that was the norm. Weren't interested in??? I was a child and majorly interested in this info and any shows that did such a thing. How strange.
No disrespect to anyone, but I wouldn't say that Don Peake wrote a new theme. This is still the theme that Stu Phillips and Glen Larson wrote. He just did a different arrangement of it. It has much more of a "Don Peake feel" to it, but it's still the same basic theme. That said, this is an incredible find and thank you for bringing it to us!
The beat sounds like a bit of Sphinx by Harry Thurmann while the melody is similar to a centuries-old classical motif. It's kind of like saying John Williams ripped off Holst's "Mars, the bringer of War" in Star Wars, sure he did but it's transformed into something new.
What incredible finds. That was so awesome to hear some of the original sound of KITT, and of course, that proposed new version of theme...very interesting! Thanks so much for all you guys do to preserve all that is Knight Rider.
I would love to hear it in the show, but just not as the opening intro theme. The original Stu Phillips theme sounds more futuristic, more mysterious and much more timeless.
Bought the lost 2nd season theme song off your website. I think it actually sounds pretty awesome, but I still prefer the original. Thank you so much for providing this piece of Knight Rider history!
Thank you for all the work that you do for the Knight Rider community! And thank you to Don Peake for being so generous allowing you to rummage through his stuff !!
Purchased! Thank you to Don for his generosity and of course to Joe and AJ for making it happen. I like both versions for different reasons. Don's version is brighter and more energetic. Really fascinating stuff.
Don is such a great guy - super talented, and super interesting! He’s got stories, and he’s quite the storyteller! Was glad to be introduced to him at a party in ‘07, and to share the musical stage with him a few years later. (as a weekend warrior musician, this was the peake of my musical experiences! also I got caught up in the moment and flubbed the bass line in the middle of Don’s guitar solo - how could I not stare and listen! - and then lost my spot, looked at the drummer - he was following ME for the change, looked at the other guitarist and we were on different chords so he tried to adjust and follow me, and then I realize Don likely wrote the solo to follow the chord progression change, and I am now lost and all I could do was pick a spot, gather the band, and move forward. After the show, Don walks up to me, shakes my hand, starts telling me a story about his car racing days while we sat there at the bar.) The guy is a walking legend, and just so humble. Great to see him on this video - it’s been a few years since I last saw him. (aside from Facebook)
Now THAT IS AWESOME!!! Ah, to see your reaction, to see your enthusiasm AND that awesome knowledge of every piece of the episodes! I am so glad for you AND for us you were allowed to get your hands on this treasure! Yes, just watching you there is such a pleasure, dear Historians! Many thanks to Don for his generosity and to you for introducing this fantastic treasure to us.
" do you think the fans would be interested in this?" of course don. Seeing and hearing what could have been is incredibly amazing to see (and hear) rough cuts/pre post footage will always be fantastic to see, same with demo tracks, alternate renditions etc
Absolutely mind blowing!!! I was 2 weeks old when he wrote that! Incredible guys, you are unbelievable at what you do!! 🙏🏻 Thank you for brining this to us!!
Done and done. Purchased pretty much as this video was wrapping up. Thank you Don and everyone at Knight Rider Historians for offering this. On a side note, does that make Don Peake the first to do a remix of the original theme? 😁 Either way great find, and thank you.
That AME logo was instantly familiar to me. Somebody associated with a totally unrelated production (not KR) once gave me some tapes from AME. AME was a contract house who did things like dubs from raw film reels to video to do editing and audio timing. The AME tapes for this other show were surplus once the edits were done, much as they are in Don's box. Different show, different purpose, but it meant a lot to me.
Perhaps those that nixed the "new" theme were not aware that it was essentially the original theme, with some modification. Their reaction, without even hearing it, seemed a little extreme.
Yeah. I was expecting a new theme departing far from the original. But it's still very recognizable as the "Knight Rider theme" so it would have worked fine and remained popular for the remainder of the show as the familiar sound of Knight Rider. I bet the higher ups never even heard 5 seconds of it before nixing it.
I’m glad to hear this and that it’s been preserved. However I’m also glad they didn’t use it on the show. Still it makes a great addition to the collection I’m slowly building of those awesome soundtracks. We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving (and we don’t even celebrate here in the UK)
Fantastic finds. That new theme sounds amazing. Guess its similar to Doctor Who, in that there's a remixed version of Delia Derbyshire's 1963 theme for each new Doctor. New season, new musical composer, new theme.
some body from universal has it, with wvry year krho shoes they are capable stewards they increase the likely hood a family member will see them as great custodians of these things.
Speechless. I was totally with you all on watching the unboxings, and you could feel the excitement! Agree, this is just the best result since finding both parts of the Semi. I have a feeling you'll have a few more of these eureka moments. Thanks, as ever, for sharing them with us! 🙌🏼
I'm alone here... but I prefer the new theme. Especially if it had been used Season 3 onward, it would've fit even more. Reminds me of Sylvester LeVay's theme on "Airwolf", how they kept tweaking it. It started more grounded and orchestral. Then synth came in in Season 2 (like Don's addition on KR). By Season 3 of AW, the Main Theme was VERY synth-heavy. I think Don's updated theme would've been a nice refresh for Season 4 with the addition of Super Pursuit Mode & KITT's convertible conversion. Thanks Don & you guys for this amazing find! Makes me feel 10 years old again.
Similar thoughts crossed my mind. The orchestral scoring Season 1 of Airwolf theme was so much better than the rest, mainly for the dogfights. The intro still worked fine as synth, though. Knight Rider theme was synth to begin with so Don's reworked theme wasn't as dramatic of a change.
The "new" theme would have worked and to be honest it did not discard Stu Philips's composition. It still sounds like the original theme but with Don Peak's signature rhythm style the series became known for when he took over as chief music composer. To be fair, it made perfect sense after changing composers to rework the main theme so that it would match the tone of the in episode music. I think Stu overreacted when he heard about plans to change the main theme. He obviously thought Don was going to create a completely original piece rendering the original them obsolete. Glen Larson was likely made to think the same thing. I don't think Stu or Glen took the time to listen to what Don composed. They simply dismissed the idea of going with a new main theme because they did not want the original theme they both worked on to be replaced by a new piece of music. Had they listened to Don's work they would have realized it was not a threat to the original theme. It simply updated it which made it better.
Great video here Joe. A fantastic find with the vhs rough cuts. The new version of the theme certainly has the Don Peake touch, but glad the powers that be kept the original.
You should have had a box with some old video tapes, pulled out one old Beta-max with K.I.T.T. on the label, said 'No, seen that' and then find the reel to reel with the alt theme for season two. 😊
"Over my Dead Body !" I’m glad they kept the original theme, but I have to say this theme could’ve been a great background song for a montage of KITT and Michael driving through the country roads.
it's pretty impressive what comes to light again after such a long time. Hopefully it will be possible to digitize a lot and make it publicly accessible instead of letting the treasures disappear again in an archive or safe where they might be lost for ever.
@10:57 - Can imagine if the 'Daddy's Gone A Hunting' video had been recorded on at the right point, it could've sounded something like this "Hey Mister, Are you my father?"...."No Kid, I'm Michael Knight - KITT and I got here before Hawke and Santini did" 😉
Have you ever stumbled across or seen the the scenes used for the ad breaks for the show in the UK? I assume they were made by the channel/network (ITV) that broadcasted it at the time..probably just lifted out of an episode,,,just can recall KITT spinning about amongst some hay bales everytime the ad break came up!
Love this!!! Hearing and seeing the rough cut eps is amazing. Would be great to hear Don discuss how he scored the eps. Did he receive the rough ep and then begin to compose the music for the ep? Or was he given episode info/notes ahead of time to come up with ideas prior to receiving any footage? A lot of music was electronic, but some used orchestra type music via groups of musicians playing french horns, etc... After writing it, did he then direct the orchestra and record them playing with footage playing on a screen so he could time it to the visuals? Like John Williams did with Star Wars?
Is it just me but did anyone else notice a bright light and angels singing when that box was first opened? 😂 It's like finding the Holy Grail 😅 Hey I love the desert video that went with the updated theme. All pretty cool 👍
Hi im Lee from the united kingdom im a huge knight rider fan i collect knight rider toys and memorobiliar Thank you for shairing knight rider tapes and series two none used theme

This unused intro theme song is really good. The original intro theme by Stu Philips will always be the best, I agree. But a huge respect to Don Peake for doing his own arrangement for the theme, as long as it's still the Knight Rider feel that we all know and love.
See. I could easily see this being used for a fan production's intro. A 'What if KARR had been salvaged and rebuilt to be part of the knight foundation' fan film, as an example. It'd be a nice hat tip to the fact Don Peak wanted to have a greater mark on things but was told in the most overkill way possible. 'No.' I'm glad you're giving him proceeds from the digital sales. Classy of you. I mean i"m sure there are reasons you're doing the things you do the way yo udo with part of that being to avoid legal issues, but this is the morally correct thing in my opinion.
Freaking amazing video and insights. The theme is interesting to hear and I can imagine it would have gotten more polish and kick if it would have been greenlit. Especially considering how punchy Don's music usually is. Very cool find.
Guys. What a find! The biggest of the big! ‘Keep up the good work’ is not appropriate here. All of those daydreams that us fans have had about production, about how the shows came to fruition, about decisions made and alternatives available, with little more than some home made VHS taped episodes to keep the candle flickering in the 90s/00s?. It’s like a whole new world has emerged, all because of you. ‘The world of the Knight Rider’ 😉🫶
Listening to Don's version of the theme, it's a fairly subtle arrangement of Stu's original. It's easy now to pick out the more noticeable changes, but 8-year-old me in 1983 might have taken some time to realize it was different if it had been used. It's not like a complete wholesale theme change, like Hardcastle & McCormick changing from "Drive" to "Back to Back", only to end up going back to "Drive" because the latter, while not a bad buddy-buddy theme, lacked the hard-driving energy of the former. (And the less said about the DeLorean-X, the better... I get they needed to better accommodate Brian Keith, but it's just not as visually appealing as the original.)
Not really a "new" theme. It's a variation. Honestly I seriously doubt that most folks would have even noticed the difference. Back when the show aired most of us were watching it live and wouldn't have had access to a VCR to check it against the existing theme. Threatening to cancel the show over it was crazy. 😂 Very cool that this was preserved either way. Thanks to Don for keeping all this stuff that might have been tossed in the dumpster otherwise. I look forward to the video and audio to come.

@@themobseatCorrect! They asked to use the song, then were refused by the writer, so they just stole it.

Elements of that theme were used frequently as incidental music in the show from S2 onwards.
That was actually a good theme. Amazing find.
Kudos to Glen Larson, Stu Phillips & NBC for retaining the iconic theme song opening throughout KnightRider's 4 seasons

(And the less said about the DeLorean-X, the better... I get they needed to better accommodate Brian Keith, but it's just not as visually appealing as the original.)
It's more soulful less robotic
Not really a "new" theme. It's a variation. Honestly I seriously doubt that most folks would have even noticed the difference. Back when the show aired most of us were watching it live and wouldn't have had access to a VCR to check it against the existing theme. Threatening to cancel the show over it was crazy. 😂
Very cool that this was preserved either way. Thanks to Don for keeping all this stuff that might have been tossed in the dumpster otherwise. I look forward to the video and audio to come.
Wow! I'm going to check out the D/L!
