In this Rare Cars documentary, we go into the history of the the ULTRA RARE Japanese sports car that put the entire world on notice for Japanese automakers, the Toyota 2000GT.
The Toyota 2000GT was the halo car of the Toyota lineup that was built to be a world class performance machine to rival the likes of the Porsche 911 and other sports cars of the time, and it did just that. This is the condensed history of the iconic Toyota 2000GT.
This video aims to provide a short history of these unique and rare cars so you can learn about them in a quick, easy to digest video.
*Note, we are not historians. If you see an error in our research then please mention it in the comments!

First Japanese car on the channel, what are your thoughts on the 2000GT? Lets discuss below!
Fantastic video! I love all of the Toyota/Yamaha collaborations and own three of them myself:
1990 MR2 3S-GTE Turbo
1993 Soarer GT-T 1JZ-GTR Twin-Turbo
1994 Celica GT4 WRC 3S-GTE Turbo
The ultimate prize to complete my garage is a toss up between the 2000GT and the Lexus LFA. Perhaps, one day?
A very cool car! 😎👍
Beautiful car, shame it's so expensive. Before I forget: there was a Shelby custom version of the 2000GT.
Most beautiful car ever made
@@goobner420I think so too! Don't ask the ghost of Enzo Ferrari because he said the exact same thing about the Jaguar XKE
Japanese shop Rocky Auto makes affordable replicas of the Toyota 2000GT. The standard engine is a 3.0-liter 2JZ.
Ooooooh
I need one ! I don’t have 100k though shit
I've watched some of their videos & the replica they make has quite a few improvements built in which really enhance the car
There was some interesting stuff between Yamaha and Nissan prior to this that makes for some interesting research. The 2000GT was very nearly a Nissan. Nissan decided they didn’t need Yamaha for this so they went on to make their own 240Z totally in house. Toyota took the engine design from the 2000GT and developed the MKI Supra’s engine from that.
So, the Supra and the Z are, tangentially, related in an interesting way. That’s the short version but the details are even more interesting and you may enjoy researching them as I did.
YES this is true! I was considering including this in the video but I was trying to keep the video a bit shorter at the 10 minute mark, do you think that adding this fact would have made the video more enjoyable for you?

I’m a new subscriber to your channel but I’ve been loving your output so far. I’m always happy to hear anything you would like to do on Toyota/Yamaha engines and the Toyota sports cars they power. I have three 3S-GTEs and a 1JZ-GTE Twin-Turbo in my small fleet of Toyotas. These are what I love. Perhaps you could do an episode on the special relationship between Yamaha and Toyota and you could mention it there?
Thanks for the reply!
I had a chance to drive one, in soCal; in 1978... one with a yellow paint scheme over a very dark blue/black interior. I didn't get a chance to wring it out, just a few dozen miles on surface streets and another 20 miles or so on the 90 freeway. Steering was light but direct, suspension was supple, but what I remember most was the jewellike interior... everything was tiny and fragile looking, yet surprisingly crisp and solid.
Still... easily one of the most beautiful automobile roofline/greenhouses ever made.
the Lexus LFA also did have its "musical" exhaust done by Yamaha for its V10!
That V10 is GLORIOUS
One of my favorite cars of all time, thanks a lot for posting this smart and pretty video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Straight fire content buddy keep it up
Thanks man! Just took a look at your channel, I got some videos to watch it seems
Toyota 0-100km 10 seconds,
Porsche 911 0-100km 6.5 seconds.
'Their performance was relatively on par'.
Doesn't make sense.
Surely the Toyota figure must be incorrect.
Love the content of the channel so far,
The RB matra Djet wouldn't look out of place here
Do a video on the 87 Grand National GNX. They were 6 cylinder beasts.
That was a Yamaha venture with Nissan that fell through (causing the 240Z) while they then partnered with Toyota and built this car. It's funny how Yamaha designed two of the greatest JDM legends and get no credit.
Yamaha were real solid at their job!
It's worth noting that both the Toyota 2000GT and the Nissan Fairlady Z have their own body designs, neither being _that_ similar to the design of the Nissan A550X.
The A550X looks a lot more like Corvettes of the era compared to either the Fairlady Z or 2000GT.
There were also 2 "convertibles" made for the James Bond movie, You Only Live Twice.
they made 4 2000GT convertibles in 1967 as Sean Connery was too tall to fit inside the coupe!
Actually they only made 2 !!
@@bobmitchell8012 They're also just roadsters, they don't have a roof to put up which means they're not convertibles.
Wasn't it Yamaha who approached Toyota to create the 2000GT? I thought it was common knowledge that it was a failed collaboration with Nissan that led Yamaha to seek another carmaker to proceed with the project.
Appreciate you.
I appreciate you!
My 2003 Prius does 0 to 60 in 8 seconds. Chipped and tuned red line raised by 1600 rpm. I'm pretty sure that GT can do 0 to 60 faster than 10 seconds.
Yamaha had to have something to do with its genius engineering
a friend of mine had one. he let me drive it all the time
That's awesome, how did it drive?
And DAMN. I BET ITS SCREAMING IT'S ITTY BITTY WITTEL HEART OUT. 🤣
Yep, that's how small non-turbo engines make power. Haha? XD
@@Zenny916 yep I know. I've listened to the turbo whine on my Pete's for 20yrs. I wouldn't ever dream of driving a NA diesel.
@3:19 did you say monoCOQUE body?! 😅 😮💨.
NONE of Toymota ‘s later cars looked anywhere near as good, except the TA22 Celica.
But Toyota did not do the original design of the 2000 gt, it was done by Yamaha for Nissan
The Nissan A550X looks a lot more like a Corvette Stingray. The Toyota 2000GT looks like a bigger Sports 800 with a fastback roofline.
Another great episode.. but...The main reason for the sales failure of this incredible car was not the price... It was WAAAAYYYY too small inside for Americans! Someone who is 5'9 and healthy could barely fit in it!!!
Almost 20k woot
I know right!? Totally crazy, and it would not be possible without fans like you so thank you for the support!
Honestly I don't know if there's any other channels that do this. At least not as well, It might do a copo Camaro or something everybody knows about.
My uncle boughte a 2500 page book on the history of the car amd i read it obsesivly

Awesome, classic and iconic American sportscar there. Very cool.
Why doesn't anyone give a review of the 2018-2020 TOYOTA Yaris Sedan?
Is it really "that" bad?
Mine was purchased 07-2020, and as of today, I only have 16,387 miles on it.
A Mazda 3 Sedan was an option when I purchased the Yaris, but as we all know COVID happened...
The MAZDA (FWD) would have cost me about $24k, as compared to the Yaris (LE) that only cost me $16,868
It’s a fantastic commuter car but now that the GR Yaris has become available, I suspect it will be the one most people review.
It looks like a Jaguar rip off, just like the Datsun 240Z did
The 2000GT was, like other 60's-70s sports cars, was terrible. It put prettiness over function. Like the Opel GT, it never was thought out too well for drivers or maintenance, or really even ultimate performance.. Honestly the best sports cars of that time were hot V8s that were dropped into small cars (think Cobra). Toyota flopped selling this thing.
Can’t buy a dragster, so why waste time looking at one?!?
Dumbest comment ever. How many of the millions of NHRA fans over the years ever said that?
Who cares. The point of 'Rare Cars' is to discuss rare cars.
So what…most ppl can’t buy one, so why waste click bait time looking?!?
What?
@@rarecars3336 I know a guy like him..our friends describe him as "positively negative".. that's this guy too... lol
Isn't that why the channel is called RARE CARS ?
@@rarecars3336
Just ignore these types of comments. This was a very enjoyable video for me and I’m positive I know everything there is to know about them without actually owning and maintaining one myself - yet.

Meh
Just like so many Toyota "me2" cars, it's a rip off.
Toyota reverse engineers and copies the Jaguar E type and then pays Yamaha to make a brilliant engine for it and then slaps a Toyota badge on it. so lame..
This is Toyota's legacy, big corporate monsters that rip off and copy from established legendary brands.. Zero pedigree..
One could argue the Camaro is the same thing to the Mustang to an extent. Does that make the Camaro a "rip off"? I personally wouldn't say so but that's my opinion
Or maybe every single oz will be a Pontiac ever made. Was a knock off over chevy
@@mikecone4049 legit point. Brand engineer was a thing..
GM and Ford caught hell for that with 6000 dollar cars.
Yet, when Fiat make a Ferrari California, Alfa Romeo 8c , and a Maserati Coupe are all the same rebadged cars at OVER 100 grand and nobody says sh... LOL!!
@@rarecars3336
lol
One could argue anything, it is 2023 after all...
Nice try, though, The Chevy Corviar was before the Mustang..
The pony car was a marketed as more affordable sports car like the Corvair.
Did the Camaro look anything like a Falcon,, err a Mustang?? Hell no!
Did Chevy get Dodge to build a real engine for it? LOL !!
🤦♂🤦♀
All of my cars have Toyota/Yamaha engines and they were all built in Toyota factories. By that logic, no one should appreciate the Ford Taurus SHO or any of the Ford cars with Cosworth engines. Ridiculous.
I'm confused...the top speed was 130 MPH, and yet it maintained that as an "average speed" over three days? Otherwise, nice video, always liked that car, though never seen one in person.
Yeah so it was on a high speed testing course so they basically ran it at close to the top speed for 3 days because it was one of those giant ovals where you could just keep going flat out!
